* e-mail: [email protected] Carl Gottfried Semper (1832-1893), a German zoologist and naturalist of the 19th century, published one of the most influential works in holothuroid systematics. His monograph on the "Holothurien" [holothurians] (1867-1868) was the first volume of his "Reisen im Archipel der Philippinen. Zweiter Theil. Wissenschaftliche Resultate" (ten volumes edited and published between 1867 and 1916). Semper was the author of more than 100 holothuroid taxa (including 63 species, 2 genera, and 1 family, valid today), unforturlate1y, most of his collection and type specimens became dispersed and considered often as lost or destroyed. Today, Semper 's type material of Holothuroidea (1867/1868, 1869) can be found at least at eight scientific institutions in Europe (B erlin, Gottingen, London, Moscow, Munich, Vienna), and the United States (Cambridge, Mass.). Here we review and present type material (microscopic slides) of Semper (18 67/1868 and 1869), found by accident by the first author (while searching for other types) within the collections of the Natural History Museum of Denmark (formerly the Zoological Museum of the University), Copenhagen. A small wooden box, containing 79 microscopic slides of different sea cucumber groups (Apodida, Holothuriida, Synallactida, and Dendrochirotida) prepared by Semper, was found. This small collection was apparently purchased for the Zoological Museum Copenhagen (on behalf of Christian Frederik LUtken) from the Museum Godeffroy in Hamburg, Germany (curator Johannes D. E. Schmeltz). A total of 43 microscopic slides with body-wall ossicles extracted from type specimens ( syntypes and holotypes) are available. These include type material of apodids (Chiridota, Oestergrenia, Opheodesoma, Polycheira, Protankyra, Synaptula), dendrochirotes (Cladolabes, Cucumaria, Havelockia, Heterocucumis, Genus, Phyllophorus, Pseudocnus, Stolus, Trachythyone), holothuriids (Holothuria, Bohadschia), and synallactids (Stichopus).
