physiologic phenomena modeling and instrumentation, cardiovascular implants, dental implants, and orthopedics implants. More information about past congresses and the society is available at http:// www6.ufrgs.br/colaob2010/en.html. Besides the selected articles, we would like to show the readership of Artificial Organs the present status and evolution in artificial organ research in Latin American countries. Vanessa Bavaresco et al. of the State University of Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil) studied the mechanical and morphological evaluation of osteochondral implants with the intention of developing alternative surgical procedures (1). Breno do Nascimento et al. of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) described a hip orthosis powered by a pneumatic artificial muscle. In this article, the group described the voluntary activation in absence of myoelectrical signal (2). Joaquín Rodriguez et al. of the National University of Rosario (Rosario, Argentina) discussed the construction and performance of their hollow fiber-based mini-bioreactor (MBR). The proposed detoxification efficiency test showed the system’s capacity to remove ammonium (3). Eduardo

Following the successful previous Special Issues of Artificial Organs published in March 2000, May 2003, and April 2008 with chosen articles from the Latin American Congress of Artificial Organs and Biomaterials (COLAOB), we selected and compiled a new special issue with chosen peer-reviewed articles from the 6th COLAOB. This meeting congregates researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Spain, the United States, and Venezuela and is organized by the Latin American Society for Artificial Organs and Biomaterials (SL). The 6th COLAOB was held in Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 17–20, 2010 and had 485 participants, 16 invited speakers, and 391 articles presented in fields of artificial heart and ventricular assist devices, biomaterials (bioceramics, bioalloys, biopolymers, surface coating, and treatment), tissue engineering, biomechanics and rehabilitation, extracorporeal circulation, hemodialysis and apheresis, cochlear implants, instrumentation for diagnosis and therapy, control of artificial organs,

Bock et al. of the Institute Dante Pazzanese of Cardiology (São Paulo, Brazil) summarized their status and results on their ventricular assist device, an implantable centrifugal blood pump in hemolysis tests (4). Oswaldo Horikawa et al. of Escola Politecnica of São Paulo University (São Paulo, Brazil) discussed their magnetic suspension for rotary blood pump design, architecture, and modeling (5). Daniel Legendre et al. of the Institute Dante Pazzanese of Cardiology (São Paulo, Brazil) described a numerical simulation study applied in development of their centrifugal blood pump (6). Celso Felipini et al. of the University São Judas Tadeu (São Paulo, Brazil) summarized their status in electro-fluid-dynamic simulations and described their model and results (7). Jeison Fonseca et al. of the Institute Dante Pazzanese of Cardiology (São Paulo, Brazil) described their technique to control brushless motors for application in artificial hearts, ventricular assist devices, and rotary blood pumps (8). Marina Maizato et al. of Heart Institute (São Paulo, Brazil) and Andrea Rodas et al. of Institute of Energetic and Nuclear Research presented their research in bovine pericardium preservation and biocompatibility (9,10). Other colleagues published their research in polymeric and metallic biomaterials (11–16) in the Artificial Organs special issue (April 2008). Following the success of the past congresses, the Society is preparing an exciting program for the next congress. On behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to invite you to submit articles and attend the 7th COLAOB in 2012. Sessions with top scientists will bring to the participants the new trends and state of the art developments in biomaterials and artificial organs. Presentations will be possible in podium sessions or poster sessions, which will provide an important interaction between professionals, researchers and students from different areas. Precongress short courses will cover different topics on the first congress day. More information about past and future congresses and the society is available at: http:// www6.ufrgs.br/colaob2010/en.html.
