New school gaining steam By DASCHELL M. PHILLIPS Staff Writer The Chicago Free School hosted an open house Saturday afternoon at its new location. The school also launched its fundraising campaign during the event. The school’s founder, Lauren Beitler, shared the mission and philosophy of the school to the crowd of about 50 teachers, parents, organizers, supporters and members of the community who attended the open house, which was held at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5500 S. Woodlawn Ave. There were also tours of the space, question and answer sessions and brainstorming workshops. Beitler, a graduate of the University of Chicago’s Urban Education

Institute, taught at schools on the South Side, including Amandla Charter School in Englewood, before heading to New York to teach at the Free School in Lauren Beitler Albany, N.Y. She found that she preferred the private school’s democratic process, where everyone — even the children — participate in making decisions for the school. After returning to Hyde Park, she hosted several informational meetings to find out if parents would be interested in this type of school for their children. “I’m impressed and amazed and

grateful to have so many people in attendance,” Beitler said. “Two years ago when I embarked on this journey of becoming a different kind of educator it seemed like a big risk, but as we get closer to our opening date, it feels like what should be happening.” Interested parents and educators asked questions about grade levels, curriculum, class size and grade reports. Beitler said the pre-K through 8th grade school is private so that it can remain free from the requirements of Chicago Public Schools, but in order to make it a place that is open to all who want to attend, tuition would be on a sliding scale based on each

family’s income. She said textbooks would not be used as the sole learning tool in classrooms. The school would have them available if teachers want to use them for certain projects. Beitler said she’s not in favor of hours of homework for children every night, and that students who attend Chicago Free School would be free to complete assignments they were working on at school at home if they want to. She also said she’s not in favor of technology for technology’s sake. She said, “If the student is working on a project that requires technological devices they will be used.” Starting in August, the school will occupy classes on the second floor of Augustana and have full access to the sanctuary, fellowship hall, courtyard and other spaces in the church, said Mia Valdez Quellhorst, one of the founding organizers who will begin teaching at the school in the fall. Valdez Quellhorst has been teaching in the public school system for four years — first

at Harvard School, an AUSL Turnaround, and currently at Horizon Science Academy a charter school on the Northwest side. Beitler, Valdez Quellhorst and the other founding organizers, five in total, were disheartened by CPS’s emphasis on teaching toward standardized tests because “standardized testing is turning school into a joyless place,” Beitler said. She said due to the school’s small class sizes, 5 to 1, teachers would be able to promote students by making their own assessments. Since the school will not measure progress with letter grades, if a family transfers their student from the Free School, administrators will call the receiving school to help with the transition. Beitler said the operating budget would be between $300,000 and $350,000 a year so tuition costs for each family would be $5,000 to $6,000 a year per student. The Free School is kicking off its fundraising efforts with a campaign video at indiegogo.com. E-mail [email protected] or visit chicagofreeschool.org for more information. [email protected]

The University of Chicago has appointed a Community Advisory Board for the Barack Obama Presidential Library. The board “is comprised of prominent South Side community leaders who, over the course of their careers, have demonstrated an enduring commitment to strengthening the quality of life on the South Side of Chicago and in the city more broadly,” the university said in a statement. The U. of C. did not clearly state what the mission of the advisory board is. The board includes museum CEOs, prominent pastors, historians, financial advisors and other community leaders: * Carol L. More delays for Whole Foods By LINDSAY WELBERS Staff Writer Whole Foods has said it does not expect to open its Hyde Park store until 2016, but the developer says construction is on schedule. Whole Foods will open its neighborhood location early in 2016, a full two years after the store was initially scheduled to open, once City Hyde Park’s construction is finished. City Hyde Park is currently under construction at the former Village Shopping Center location on the corner of 51st Street and Lake Park Avenue. Once completed in the fourth quarter of 2015, it will be home to 180 apartments, 120,000 square feet of commercial space and two levels of underground parking. “Are we behind schedule relative to our plans in 2005? Of course,” Antheus Capital spokesman Peter Cassel said. “Based on our current plans I think this is in the realm of

Whole Foods spokesman Allison Phelps said they expect to take time to create a store they say reflects the neighborhood. “Each one of our stores is a unique reflection of the community and the Hyde Park store is no different. As we have done with all our other stores, once we get closer to the opening date, we will reach out to the community to hear what they want from their neighborhood Whole Foods Market,” Phelps said. Jay Travis lays out campaign By JEFFREY BISHKU-AYKUL Staff Writer “She’s not a talker, she’s a doer,” Kenwood Oakland Community Organization Education Organizer Jitu Brown told an energetic group of around 40 supporters shortly before Jay Travis’ first press conference last Tuesday. Quoting the late comedian Robin Harris, he then led his audience into chanting that Travis’ opponent, state Rep. Christian Mitchell (D26), has “gotta go.” A former director of the KenwoodOakland Community Organization and activist of two decades, Travis is hoping to unseat Mitchell, who was elected in 2012 with backing from Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle and Ald. Will Burns (4th). The mood was fiery at Travis’ small tworoom campaign office at 4531 S. Cottage Grove Ave., when field director Shannon Bennett held court to formally kick off the press conference with several endorsements. One of them came from Brandon Johnson, deputy political director for the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) — whose House of Delegates voted last year to

endorse Travis. “We have schools in this district that do not have libraries,” Johnson said. “The current leadership has not spoken to that. We have schools across this district that do not have computer labs, world language, the basic necessities like art and libraries.” Johnson added that “the current leadership — so called leadership — in this district, would much rather align themselves with a gubernatorial candidate that not only hates public education, but hates the very workers that make up the public sector,” in a reference to Republican front-runner Bruce Rauner. Travis is betting that union support and aggressive rhetoric will boost her bid in the March Democratic primary election for 26th District Representative. So far, she has received $20,000 from the CTU Political Action Committee — her top donor — and $10,000 from the AFSCME Illinois Council 31. The public service worker union, which filed suit in January to overturn the state’s newly-passed pension reform bill, announced its endorsement of Travis on Monday.

Strive brings fundraising home By DASCHELL M. PHILLIPS Staff Writer Hyde Park-based non-profit Strive Tutoring is hosting its annual fundraiser in the neighborhood this year. Strive, 5001 S. Ellis Ave., is an educational services center for students that provides free educational support, customized tutoring and enrichment activities to youth from Chicago’s South Side. The program offers academic services such as ACT prep and enrichment activities including chess, art projects and culinary science projects for two hours twice a week after school. For the past several years, the organization, established in 1988, has usually hosted its fundraisers downtown but this year decided to return the event to Hyde Park. “We feel the need to reconnect with resources in our community and cultivate deeper ties to the families, kids and the University of Chicago, local businesses and neighbors,” said Angela Paranjape,

executive director of Strive. “We feel it’s time to root ourselves here.” This year Strive’s fundraising event will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Hyde Park Bank lobby, 1525 E. 53rd St. Highlights include food from restaurants in Hyde Park, a live jazz trio featuring guitarist Buddy Fambro and an auction featuring items such as trips to Paris and New York. There are also best of Hyde Park and best of downtown Chicago packages. Last year the organization raised $31,000. Paranjape said this year at least $41,000 is needed to meet the needs of the expanding program, which has grown from 20 students to 50 students in the past year. “We hope that the community will join us and support a great cause right here in the neighborhood,” Paranjape said. “Come celebrate and support us and have a really fun evening.” For more information, e-mail [email protected] or visit strivetutoring.org. In addition to performances, the festival will feature more than 15 music and dancing workshops. “I was just blown away by how good all these artists from all these categories were,” said U. of C. Folklore Society Co-President William Cramer, who first attended the festival as a college freshman volunteer.

Now a senior, the astrophysics student voted with his fellow club members on who to invite to this year’s event, supported in part by the university but mostly by ticket sales. In addition to ticket revenue, the festival depends on a roster of volunteers, who are promised free admission to a night of performances in exchange for three hours of help. Cramer estimates 75 to 100 people will volunteer this year. “If anyone wants to volunteer and they just show up and say, ‘We’re looking for something to do, to help out,’ we’ll make sure to have a job,” Cramer said. Why I’m running for the 26th District Coming together to By JAY TRAVIS I was born, raised and educated in the neighborhoods of the 26th District. Growing up, my grandmother told me stories of how she had to stand up to slumlords in Kenwood to ensure that her hard-earned rent paid for safe, clean housing. She pressed upon me that no matter where you were from, you deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. She taught me that when you weren’t treated fairly, you had a responsibility to stand up for yourself and your community. Her advocacy inspired me to become an organizer. As the executive director of the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO), one of Chicago’s oldest and largest grassroots community organizations, I built a coalition that has created more than 8,500 jobs and generated $14 million in public funding for youth summer employment opportunities across the state of Illinois. I stood with our parents in fighting back against school closures and built a community coalition that overwhelmingly passed a voter referendum in support of an elected school board. This is the kind of leadership we need in Springfield. As state representative, I will continue to fight for the families of the 26th District. My vision for the district includes: • Creating Jobs and Growing the Economy for Everyone As the only candidate in this race with a record of job creation, I will continue to develop our workforce, grow our economy and stabilize our communities. I will champion reforms that level the playing field for small businesses that create good-paying jobs in the neighborhoods hit hardest by the

recession. I will fight to invest in youth employment, raise the minimum wage and re-invest our tax dollars in our communities. • Supporting Excellent Neighborhood Public Schools All children have the right to a worldclass education in their own neighborhood. In Springfield, I will stand up for a just school funding formula that ends the disparities between rich and poor school districts. I am also the only candidate in this race who has a track record of standing with parents to stop school closings and to install an elected school board. • Investing in Safe Streets and Strong Communities I believe that communities can and should be made safer from the ground

Guest column

up. To address the root causes of violence, I will continue to champion funding for workforce development, education and employment, particularly for at-risk youth and exoffenders. • Reforming our Pensions Humanely and Responsibly The pension reform bill that passed this spring broke a promise to elderly retirees and public sector workers. Elderly retirees have earned their retirement security by working hard, paying into the system, setting down roots in our communities, and forgoing Social Security. We must remember that stable public sector professions, like teaching and nursing, are a crucial pathway to the middle class for our communities, and particularly for lowincome people of color. I am the only

candidate in this race who supports efforts to overturn this flawed pension reform bill, and to replace it with a solution that generates the revenue needed to restore the state’s Jay Travis financial health and provide our seniors with the retirement security that they have worked for all their lives. Here in the 26th District, there are neighborhoods with unemployment rates that are triple the national average — as high as during the Great Depression. Our neighborhood schools have been shuttered, destabilizing and disinvesting in our communities, and yet my opponent took no action on a bill this spring that would have stopped these closings once and for all. This is unacceptable. The families of the 26th District deserve better. I’m running for state representative because my grandmother taught me the importance of taking a stand for my community. Will you stand with me? Jhatayn “Jay” Travis is running against Christian Mitchell in the March 18 Democratic Primary for the Illinois 26th District. Jay led the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) from 20002012. She is a graduate of Mann Elementary, Kenwood Academy, Columbia College, and the University of Chicago. Jay lives in Kenwood, where she helps take care of her 4year-old niece and her grandmother. Her campaign website is jayforus.com.

support the young

By DASCHELL M. PHILLIPS Staff Writer The African American Alumni Committee of the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration will host a discussion about young, African American males on Feb. 15. The symposium, “Black Young Men in America: Rising Above Social and Racial Prejudice, Trauma and Educational Disparities,” will discuss how to effectively communicate and build relationships with young Black men, how untreated trauma impacts African American male adolescents’ ability to thrive in America and how the use of education can be a key to intervention. The event will take place in the School of Social Service Administration building, 969 E. 60th St., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include a keynote address by Rodney Walker, CEO of Forever Life Productions. “This conversation has been a long time coming,” said Eugene Robinson Jr., chairman of the African American Alumni professional development committee and the organizer of the symposium. “The idea was sparked by the Trayvon Martin incident, the George Zimmerman trial and the trial’s outcome. Robinson, who by profession is a college and career specialist at Bowen High School said young African American males also face academic challenges. “Eighty-one percent of African American males in Chicago Public Schools have less than a 2.5 grade point average,” Robinson said. Highlights of the event will include a panel discussion and workshops presented by Nia Abdullah, Kweku Embil, Elizabeth Kirby, Patrick W. Milton, Eric Williams and Catherine Whitfield, all from the Chicago Public Schools; Marshaun Bacon and Jason Story, Youth Guidance; Greg Gaither, Illinois African American Juvenile Justice Institute; Troy Harden, Chicago State University; Waldo Johnson, University of Chicago SSA; Kweli Kwaza, Talented Tenth; Sequane Lawrence, Center for Strategic Investment in Youth and Families; Laura Patrick, LEARN Charter School Network; Jourdan Sorrell, 100 Black Men of Chicago;

Cafe meant to support Seminary Co-op finally poised to open By JEFFREY BISHKU-AYKUL Staff Writer The long-awaited Plein Air Cafe will open next door to the Seminary Co-op Bookstore on March 1, according to co-owner Soo Choi. Construction on the 40-seat cafe at 5751 S. Woodlawn Ave. is complete and the necessary permits have been obtained. Finishing touches are finally being made to

the eatery, first conceived of two years ago. “It was a long, arduous process,” Choi said. Choi is developing the cafe’s menu with Art Jackson of the Pleasant House Bakery, 964 W. 31st St. She says it will feature pastries, sandwiches, tartines and light continental breakfasts, as well as artisan coffees using locally roasted beans from Metric Coffee. Choi also plans to serve brunch on weekends and host seasonal

coffee tastings. “Food and fashion to me, it’s very visual,” said Choi, whose cafe will also include custom-made furniture and an exhibition of Chicago-based printmaker Steven Eichhorn’s work. An outdoor patio overlooking Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House will be added later this year. Choi will own the cafe with designer Ken Heisner, a partner at Heisler Hospitality. The group’s concepts include the Sportman’s Club bar in Humboldt Park and the revamped Ohio House Bakery in River North. Plein Air Cafe is Choi and Heisner’s second joint-effort: Two years ago, they

sold the Little Branch Cafe, 1251 S. Prairie Ave., which Choi says U. of C. President Robert Zimmer used to visit regularly. The cafe’s European flair is inspired by Choi’s time across the Atlantic working for Antwerp, Belgium-based designer Tim Van Steenbergen, during which she attended Paris Fashion Week three times. The cafe takes its name from the French term for “open air,” and according to Choi has the feel of an atelier. “When I was in Europe I really just loved the ideal of going to European cafes,” she said. Open Produce Kenwood art is a surprise hit U. of C. contractor picked

By JENNET POSEY Herald Intern Open Produce, 1635 E. 55th St., is showcasing a group exhibit featuring art by students of Kenwood Academy High School. The drawings and paintings, which are all based on a botanical theme, were inspired by a December field trip to the Garfield Park Conservatory. “They spent the whole day walking around and drawing,” said Matt Milkowski, an art teacher at Kenwood, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave. Milkowski came together with Open Produce employee Sean Nicolson to create the student exhibit. “We are happy to collaborate and have students share their work with the community,” Milkowski added. The show, which was unveiled on Jan. 17 and will run

through Feb. 13, is the first of a series by Kenwood drawing and photography students. Another exhibit featuring work by two photography students will start Friday, Feb. 14. In addition to having their work displayed and sold, the students receive the profits from their work minus a small fee to cover the frames. “We’re looking to get frames donated,” said Nicholson. So far, half of the 18 drawings and paintings have been sold and Nicholson is pleased with the popularity of the students’ artwork in the community. “To have that volume of sales isn’t something that I was expecting,” said Nicholson. “None of the work has been sold to friends or family. It’s been sold to customers,” she continued. The success of the students’ series has been rewarding for Milkowski. “I love them,” he said. “I’m incredibly proud.” [email protected]

BankFinancial move costly

By JEFFREY BISHKU-AYKUL Staff Writer Consolidation of BankFinancial’s e-branch with its main location at 1354 E. 55th St. cost $100,000, according to the company’s latest financial report. BankFinancial’s Hyde Park East branch, located at 5500 S. Lake Park Ave., was converted into a teller-less bank in spring 2012. It was closed last January because of declining business. “We did not transfer any equipment,” said Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales Gregg Adams. The company’s 4th quarter report detailing finances for the last three months of 2013 was released Tuesday, Feb. 3. [email protected]

Richard Evans, 78 Life-long Hyde-Parker Dr. Richard Evans, a cardiothoracic surgeon at the former Michael Reese Hospital, died on Jan. 20. He was 78. Born in West Rogers Park to a Polish immigrant father who worked as a shoe salesman and a homemaker mother, Dr. Evans left Senn High School after just two years and, at 15, came to the University of Chicago to study pre-med and never left. He attended the university for college and stayed through medical school and his residency, ascending to chief resident. He met his wife, Roberta while he was in medical school and she was a student at the University of Chicago Law School. The couple married and raised their Richard Evans three children in Hyde Park where they attended Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School and the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. At Michael Reese, he was considered a master in the operating room and a kind and skilled mentor. His practice focused on cardiothoracic and thyroid surgery and, over the years, he trained hundreds of doctors. Meticulous and highly skilled, yet also modest and compassionate, Dr. Evans had young doctors flocking to his operating room to learn, veteran doctors seeking his care for their loved ones and scores of patients singing his praises. Deeply devoted to his patients, he would never turn anyone away who couldn’t pay and would not let a day go by without visiting each of his patients in the hospital, said one of his daughters, Elizabeth Evans. Outside of work, Dr. Evans was known for his intellectual curiosity and breadth of knowledge and interests, including art, history, music and theater. Reading materials littered his home, from biographies and newspapers to medical journals and scientific publications. He was, his daughter said, a “true example of a lifelong learner. He embodied the best of Hyde Park and supported the community throughout his life.” A loving father and husband, Dr. Evans lost his only son, Michael, to colon cancer in 2004. It was a loss that was a heavy burden to his dying day. Dr Evans and his wife Roberta led the campaign to raise funds for a nursery school playground at Akiba Schechter, named “Mike’s Place” in memory of their son. Dr. Evans is survived by his wife, Roberta; daughters Elizabeth and Susan (Michael Boxerman) Evans; daughterin-law Beth-Anne Jacob; her partner Roberto Rodriguez and five grandchildren.

At Tuesday’s event, Travis highlighted her support for school funding reform, the creation of an elected school board and a moratorium on school closings. “We’ve had it with unelected school boards passing down policies, ignoring the voices of the people,” Travis said. “Representative Mitchell didn’t have the courage to stand with the people and turned a deaf ear when they came to tell him that the school closings had destabilized our neighborhood schools and we demanded an end to it.” Travis also addressed her opposition to SB-1, the pension reform plan developed last year with help from state Sen. Kwame Raoul’s (D-16) Pension Reform Conference Committee. The legislation is unconstitutional, according to her. The bill, which Mitchell and many other Democrats voted for, raised retirement ages for public employees by as much as five years and tied benefits to inflation instead of a flat 3 percent rate. At the same time, it reduced by 1 percent the amount in required contributions from employees’ salaries to

open to social workers, educators, policymakers grassroots organizations, faith-based organizations and all who feel they can contribute to the conversation. “If we’re going to change outcomes for African American males we need key people at the table so we can discuss who do we need to talk to and walk out with solutions and collaborations in place that will lead us to our and next steps,” Whittington-Eskridge said. Travis made the case that as a longtime organizer, she is equipped to tackle unemployment. “I am the only candidate in this race with a track record of creating jobs,” she said, in a reference to her campaign to pass the Community Youth Investment Act, which Gov. Quinn signed in 2010 and Travis claims created more than 8,500 summer jobs. “If we’re going to discuss violence prevention, we have to discuss employment,” she added. Travis is a graduate of Kenwood Academy High School and of Columbia College Chicago, and has received a master’s degree from the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. In August, efore embarking on her campaign, she resigned from her position as a program officer at the Woods Fund of Chicago. [email protected]

“Luna Gale””

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Where: Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn St. When: through Feb. 23 Tickets: $25-$81 Phone: 312-443-3800 By ANNE SPISELMAN Theater Critic

P

laywright Rebecca Gilman is a master of audience manipulation. She’s amazingly adept at fleshing out a complicated social problem with wellconceived, often flawed characters, then letting its complexity unfold in such a way that our perspective keeps shifting. Such is the case with the splendidly directed (by Robert Falls) and acted world premiere of her “Luna Gale” at Goodman Theatre. And what a case it is. Literally. Caroline, a compassionate but burned-out social worker in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has to decide whether the title infant, brought to the emergency room extremely ill, should eventually be returned to her meth-addicted teenage parents, Karlie and Peter, or remanded to the care of her maternal grandmother, Cindy, an evangelical Christian. At first it seems like a no brainer. Compulsively eating candy and pacing the hospital waiting room, the hyped-up Karlie (rail-thin Reyna de Courcy) hardly is a fit parent, and Peter (Colin Sphar) is passed out in a chair looking like a lout. Although Caroline informs them that the goal of child protective services is “reunification,” it quickly becomes apparent that the overburdened system doesn’t have room in all the rehab and counseling sessions required for them to keep custody. Cindy (Jordan Baker), nervous and accommodating when Caroline (Mary Beth

Fisher) visits her well-maintained home, comes across as the better choice, even if her references to Jesus and Pastor Jay (Richard Thieriot, spot-on) are a little offputting. Karlie, however, is vehemently opposed to having her baby placed with her mother, with whom she’s had a troubled relationship (to say the least), and the plot thickens when Cindy seeks permanent custody, enlisting the aid of Pastor Jay and a lawyer. Caroline, who has personal issues influencing her decisions, begins to regret them, especially since Karlie and Peter are trying to clean up their act. In an effort to help them and rectify the situation, she does something that clearly crosses the line. Or does it? Is it wrong if her gut impulses are right? Gilman tackles these questions and more. While little Luna Gale is just entering the system, Lourdes (Melissa DuPrey) has “aged out” at 18 after a life in foster care. College-bound, she visits Caroline to say goodbye and is congratulated as a success story, but things don’t turn out as they should. Cliff (Erik Hellman), Caroline’s smug, by-the-book new boss whose agenda is his own advancement, has a hand in this, and his frequent clashes with the 25-year veteran case worker, who knows she deserved his job, highlight the many things wrong with the system. In a sense, the strengths and weaknesses are embodied by Caroline, superbly played by Fisher. Tough-minded but sympathetic, weary and overworked but unafraid of a fight, she’s a little like the doctor the actress recently portrayed in “The Normal Heart,” only much more vulnerable. Her past comes out, albeit inappropriately, in a remarkable scene with Cliff and Pastor Jay, who seem to take advantage of her raw pain to elicit a conversion, only to have her fiercely turn the tables — prompting a round of applause

from the opening night audience. Caroline’s canny solution to the custody battle also offers a ray of hope at the end, an instance of the system working in spite of itself, thanks to a caring individual. While de Courcy’s Karlie has feigned indifference and not-so-repressed rage down pat, and Baker’s Cindy is study in insecurity and self-righteous denial, it’s Sphar’s forthright, well-meaning Peter who emerges as the character we really root for. As he gradually grows into a responsible adult, as well as a truth-teller to both Karlie and Cindy, our perceptions of him change

completely, and by the finale, the lout of the opening is long gone. Todd Rosenthal’s rotating set and Robert Wierzel’s lighting perfectly capture the ambiance of everywhere from the stark hospital waiting room to the social workers’ office and playroom, as well as Cindy’s lived-in kitchen and Karlie and Peter’s tidied-up apartment. Kaye Voyce’s costumes include lots of little touches that help define the characters. On the whole, though, it’s Gilman’s writing and the acting that make “Luna Gale” one of the most compelling shows of the year so far.

“The Barber of Seville”” Where: Lyric Opera, 20 N. Wacker Dr. When: through Feb. 28 Phone: 312-332-2244

By M.L. RANTALA Classical Music Critic

L

yric Opera of Chicago’s new production of “The Barber of Seville” is suffused with gaiety, sparkle and laughs. Its sets and costumes effectively transport you to another time and place. The singing is entrancing. But what makes this “Barber” very special are all the touches brought to it by first-time opera director Bob Ashford. His previous work, both directing and in choreography, has usually put him behind the scenes on Broadway or television programs like the Academy Awards. He brings glitz to opera, and in the best way. The entire stage is his canvas and he paints beautifully in every corner. Ashford even knows how to take a complicated scene change in the middle of Act I and turn it not into a mini-recess for those who need to cough, but instead an intricate dance of props and machinery. There’s circular movement of objects juxtaposed with supernumeraries moving in the other direction, managing to make a

witty little point about how the machinations of the characters in the story often move in opposite directions and to counter purposes. The end of Act I is an incredible achievement which combines detailed movement of six principals, several supernumeraries and a large male chorus all helping the story to unfold. It is slick, it is entertaining and it is marvelous. It is a joy to have such an expressive approach coupled with some mighty fine singing. Illinois baritone Nathan Gunn as Figaro scampers this way and that as he helps the course of true love. His voice is full and dashing, and he stuffs his performance with just the right amount of silliness. He’s a joy to behold. Equally splendid is soprano Isabel Leonard as Rosina. Her portrayal and her singing are both full of life. Tenor Alek Shrader as Count Almaviva is often rather good, but his voice tends to be pale. By the end of the opera he’s lost his power and he even struggles to maintain his rhythm. As Dr. Bartolo, Alessandro Corbelli displays pronounced comic gifts. This Italian baritone consistently nails the amusing patter passages. Kyle Ketelsen as Don Basilio and Tracy Cantin as Berta were both excellent. The young conductor Michele Mariotti makes the most of his Lyric Opera debut, leading the orchestra in a perky and bright performance. Chorus master Michael Black must surely have been proud of his singers’ flawless performance.

◆◆◆ The University of Chicago Presents hosted the Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein trio the last day of January at Mandel Hall and my only real complaint is that this very talented ensemble ought to have a more memorable, less cumbersome name! Alon Goldstein (piano), Amit Peled (cello) and Alex Fiterstein (clarinet) gave a glorious performance of the Beethoven Piano Trio in B-flat Major. The allegro was pert and snappy, with the clarinet remarkably adept in the rapid passages and the piano feathery light. The adagio was both engaging and pretty. The conclusion, some wonderful variations, was rendered with perfect ensemble coordination. The sound was invigorating and the trio’s light touches seemed perfect. The building of intensity led to an exciting conclusion. Pianist Goldstein took the stage alone for Liszt’s Paraphrase on Verdi’s “Aida” (Sacred

building faltered. Antheus was able to secure funding using new market tax credits, $11.3 million in tax increment financing money, enterprise zone benefits, as well as private funding sources. Dance and Finale Duet). His playing was luminescent and direct. His easiness when rattling off rapid passages with clarity was impressive, as was his raw power. The “Premiére Rhapsodie” by Debussy saw clarinetist Fiterstein move readily through some complex music, adeptly aided by Goldstein. After the intermission, cellist Peled had the hot seat with Kopytman’s Kaddish for cello and piano. His introductory remarks helped the listener understand the piece and its interesting structure. The music evoked the anger, love and admiration of a son for his father, with Peled giving full expression to all these emotions. The concert closed with all three musicians once again on stage for a perfectly fine reading of the Brahms Trio for piano, clarinet and cello in A minor. It was the least interesting music on the program, but the three men gave it lots of passion. An unusually harsh winter hasn’t delayed construction much, Cassel said. Crews worked on the site as long as temperatures were above zero, but work was cancelled once it dipped into negatives. Cassel said construction crews are working to remove debris and subsurface elements so that work can begin that will lead to excavating for the underground parking structure. “We’re just really excited that this is all coming together,” Cassel said. La Rabida opens new wing to provide outpatient care By DASCHELL M. PHILLIPS Staff Writer The La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Jackson Park hosted the grand opening of its new outpatient center Monday. Past and present patients, community members and elected officials attended the ceremony and shared their memories and gratitude for the hospital. La Rabida, which was built during the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, is an outpatient hospital that serves children with special healthcare needs. The hospital, 6501 S. Promontory Dr., underwent renovation and expansion in order to become more efficient and less costly. The new 13,000-square-foot clinic holds 18 exam rooms designed especially for children with special health care needs. The rooms are larger with wider entrances and more specialty areas such as a procedure room and a nutrition area. Each section of the space, which has broad

windows that showcase a dramatic view of Lake Michigan, has bright colors and aquatic themes nicknamed fish, turtle, duck and frog “ponds” for each section of the center. There are also team rooms where all specialists who are working with a patient can meet and discuss the patient’s condition and provide care. “It may make for one long appointment, but the family won’t have to make several different trips to the hospital to meet with each specialist,” said Pamela Northrop, early intervention manager at La Rabida. The designers of the new center Project Management Advisors (PMA) and architecture firm VOA, added environmentally friendly features. The designers, who have applied for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) recognition, added a rooftop garden, a water system that collects rainwater and returns it to Lake Michigan and lights that dim based on the amount of sunlight that fills each room. These features contribute to an 18 percent reduction in energy use, 40 percent reduction in HVAC fan power and 57 percent reduction in space cooling energy. Andy Roscoe, project manager for PMA, said his favorite feature of the center, which took about three years to complete, is the healing garden. “It’s a great outdoor space, right off the lake with a soft surface,” Roscoe said. During the opening celebration some of the hospital’s famous patients and family members — such as actor and CSI Criminal Minds star Joe Mantegna, who was treated at La Rabida for rheumatic fever as a child, and former Chicago Bears player Charlie Brown, whose daughter Sharlene Hobson was treated for asthma — were given special recognition and featured in the hospital’s literature.

“These stories of success are critical to highlight,” said state Sen. Kwame Raoul (D13) one of several elected officials in attendance. “When kids come in it’s important for them to see the possibilities that lie ahead of them.” Raoul said supporting institutions like La Rabida is like continuing a legacy for him since his father was a childcare physician. Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) said she also felt it was her duty to uphold a legacy by supporting La Rabida. She spoke about her first experiences at La Rabida. “As a child I volunteered here with my

grandmother,” Hairston said. “At a young age I saw the different needs of the children and knew that it was a part of my responsibility to take care of them. It’s great to still be here so many years later to see such great work being done.” La Rabida President and CEO Brenda Wolf thanked Raoul for helping the hospital receive state funding and Hairston for her help with city permits. She also thanked Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who sent a letter of support, and Louise McCurry, prsident of the Jackson Park Advisory Council. [email protected]
