Dear Valued Distributor, Earlier this month we released a Shell Lubricants Handbook (material no. 5066096) which is a field-guide for sales, customer service, and technical staff and which contains detailed product information including specifications and equipment coverage of Shell branded products. The previous book was released some time ago, so this latest edition contains some new items that may not be familiar to you. The handbook includes mostly products available within the US. Some products are also available in both the US and Canada. (Shell Lubricants Canada releases a separate handbook for that market.) Some other products that are part of our global portfolio and are not yet available, but could be made available in the future, are for the sake of completeness included in the current handbook. And there is one omission due to printer error. Some examples of the above products: CI-4 PLUS Products not available in Canada: The Handbook lists both Shell Rimula Premium® (p. 136) and Shell Rotella® T Multigrade (p. 144) products; both are unavailable in Canada. Shell Rotella® products on pages 152 – 163 not yet available in the US: Shell Rotella® T1 (p. 152), Shell Rotella® T2 (p. 154), Shell Rotella® T3 (p. 156), Shell Rotella® T5 (p. 158), Shell Rotella® T5 0W-30 (p. 160), Shell Rotella® T6 (p. 162), not yet available in the US. The omission of FormulaShell® conventional motor oil in 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30 is regrettable. We strive to continue to grow our lubricants business, and we continue to manage our portfolio to provide the right products for the needs of our customers. This process involves both introducing new products and eliminating offerings that have run their course; both types may appear in the handbook. Prior to the launch of any new products already in the handbook, comprehensive sales training and materials will drive successful implementation. Likewise, we strive to deliver usable information at your fingertips. In case that you have a product information request that is not covered in the handbook or are looking for a replacement for a product no longer available, please try http://www.epc.shell.com/, www.shelllubricants.com, or call the Technical Information Center at 800-237-8645. Please make sure that sales and customer service personnel use the handbook and other resources as much as possible to achieve sales excellence in the marketplace. Also, please contact your Shell Lubricants sales representative with any questions you may have regarding our products or the new handbook. We appreciate and value your business. Sincerely,
Luis Guimaraes General Manager, Marketing, North America Shell Lubricants
The expression “Shell Lubricants” refers to the companies of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, which are engaged in the lubricants businesses, and has no legal significance. Each of the companies is an independent entity and has its own separate identity.

AeroShell® Fluid 2F Corrosion Preventive Compound for Reciprocating Aircraft Engines AeroShell® Fluid 2F is a rust and corrosion preventive oil commonly used to preserve aircraft internal combustion engines. The ashless anti-corrosion additive package and highly refined petroleum base oils protect the engine by minimizing the effects of humidity and neutralizing the acidic components of engine oil oxidation and combustion by-products. Meets the requirement of MIL-C-6529 Type II specification for corrosion preventives for aircraft engines. Main Applications
Specifications, Approvals, and Recommendations
AeroShell® Fluid 2F is normally used as a preservation grade engine oil for the internal preservation of engines or engine parts and accessories during moderate outdoor to long-term indoor storage periods. This oil can also be used as a “flyaway” oil for reciprocating engines; however, Shell does not recommend that you fly an opposed engine more than 50 hours during the TBO (Time Before Overhaul) cycle. The engine to be preserved should be filled to normal capacity with AeroShell® Fluid 2F and then run at the idle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature (approximately 10-15 minutes).

Specifications, Approvals, and Recommendations • • • • • •
Main Applications AeroShell® Fluid 31 is recommended for use in aircraft, ordnance, and missile systems operating from –40°C to +205°C. This fluid should be considered for use in auto pilots, shock absorbers, brakes, flight control systems, hydraulic servocontrolled systems and other systems using synthetic elastomer seals. An increasing number of aircraft manufacturers now recommend use of this type of fluid in aircraft hydraulic systems in preference to mineral hydraulic oils. This move has been prompted by need to use fluids with better fire resistant properties. AeroShell® Fluid 31 is also approved for use in the Honeywell (formerly Garrett) cooling turbine (cabin air compressors). Increasingly this type of hydraulic fluid is being adopted for use in hydraulic systems of military aircraft in place of mineral hydraulic fluids. AeroShell® Fluid 31 is a synthetic hydrocarbon oil and should not be used in contact with incompatible seal materials. Refer to the General Notes at the front of this section for further information.

Bearing and Circulating Oil
Shell VSI Circulating Oil Hydraulic and lubricating oil for rust protection in vapor spaces Shell developed VSI (Vapor Space Inhibiting) Circulating Oil with an anti-rust compound which is oil soluble and volatile. This corrosion inhibitor fills the vapor space above the oil level to form a rust preventive barrier on exposed metal surfaces and helps combat vapor space rusting. Moisture in enclosed air spaces over circulating oils is very likely to cause rusting when it condenses on the cool walls of gear cases or reservoirs. Further, this condensed moisture is constantly replenished as the system “breathes” through vents and other openings. • The equipment should be clean before installing Shell VSI Circulating Oil. Contamination may promote rusting. • Freshly cleaned surfaces should be immediately coated with Shell VSI Circulating Oil, if possible, to afford protection until rust inhibiting vapors can form. • Shell VSI Circulating Oil is designed primarily for protection of ferrous metals. It is noncorrosive to most non-ferrous metals including brass, copper, bronze, zinc, babbitt, aluminum and magnesium. However, contact with lead and lead alloys should be avoided unless the alloys have been tested for suitability under actual operating conditions. • For maximum effectiveness, the maximum distance from the oil to the surfaces requiring protection should be kept reasonably short. Experience indicates that with 80°F oil the distance should be no more than about six feet. Where temperatures are lower, the maximum distance should be less, and at temperatures over 80°F it may be somewhat greater. • Because of the significant effect that temperature and ventilation have on depleting the rustinhibiting additive, and because of differences in make-up rates, it is difficult to predict oil service life. However, experience has indicated that while the oil change interval is shorter than that for premium quality turbine oils, it is sufficiently long to fit in with plant preventive maintenance schedules.
Performance Features and Benefits • Excellent demulsibilty • Excellent corrosion protection
Main Applications • Hydraulic, turbine, and general lubricating applications • Enclosed lubricating oil systems where rusting is likely to occur • Anti-friction bearings and gears, reservoirs, system housings, piping and similar system components • Machine tools that may be idle for weekends or longer Advice on applications not covered in this handbook may be obtained from your Shell representative.
Recommended Practices for Using Shell VSI Circulating Oil • High temperature will accelerate inhibitor release while low temperature will retard it. An initial temperature of 80° to 100°F will assist in early distribution of the VSI agent. In operating systems recommended bulk oil temperatures are 80° to 150°F. Temperatures over 200°F should be avoided because of the excessive rust inhibiting vapor loss. • A tightly closed system is best, and no attempt should be made to protect a completely open system. Most oil circulating systems and reservoirs afford a relatively closed system to keep the oil free of contamination. Any reduction in system ventilation will help improve the corrosion inhibiting action. Bearing and Circulating Oil

Shell GARIA® Oils High quality active sulfur cutting oils Shell GARIA® Oils are light colored, anti-mist, active sulfur cutting oils designed for use in moderate to severe machining operations. Shell GARIA® cutting oils are available in different EP levels and viscosity grades to cover a wide variety of machining operations and metals. Both the “CM Series” and “M-Series” of Shell GARIA® cutting oils contain unique synergistic extreme pressure additive systems that readily react at the chip-tool interface to form extremely effective boundary lubricating films which reduce frictional heat and prevent metal-to-metal contact of the tool and workpiece. • Shell GARIA® 622S-34 can be used to machine even the most difficult of metals. Shell GARIA® 622S-34 is particularly suited for the machining of titanium and its alloys since it contains no chlorinated additive that may react with the metal and weaken the surface. • Shell GARIA® 623CS-52 and Shell GARIA® 623S-54 have the highest levels of EP of all the products in this series and can be used where most other cutting oils fail. Shell GARIA® 623CS-52 and Shell GARIA® 623S-54 can handle the most difficult operations and can machine the most difficult metals and alloys.
• Shell GARIA® 422CM-36 and Shell GARIA® 422M-36, all of the product family contain fatty oil additives which increase the lubricity and provides better surface finish of workpieces. All of these cutting oils possess excellent anti-wear and anti-weld properties to help maximize tool life. • Shell GARIA® 421CM-12 and Shell GARIA® 421M-12 are low viscosity cutting oils, particularly suited for deep hole drilling, grinding, and other operations where a low viscosity cutting oil would be preferred. Chips and grinding swarf readily settle in Shell GARIA® 421CM-12 and Shell GARIA® 421M12. Due to their low viscosity, loss of oil due to carry-off with the chips is also minimized with Shell GARIA® 421CM-12 and Shell GARIA® 421M-12. • Shell GARIA® 422CM-36 and Shell GARIA® 421M-36 can be used in a wide variety of operations where the machining requirements range from moderate to severe. Operation Guidelines
Storage Requirements
When used as a heat transfer fluid, care should be taken to ensure sufficient flow rate to avoid even a temporary overheating of the heat transfer fluid. Reynolds-Number should be >10,000 (ten thousand). This is most important during start up and shut down of the heating systems. The surface temperature of the heating elements (film temperature) should not exceed 320ºC. The physical parameters of the oil necessary for the calculation of the heat transfer coefficient in the system, such as density, specific heat and coefficient of thermal conductivity are indicated in the below.
All food grade lubricants, such as Shell CASSIDA® Fluid DC, should be stored separately, out of direct sunlight or other heat sources, from other lubricants, chemical substances and foodstuffs. Store between 0ºC and 40ºC. Provided that the product has been stored under these conditions we recommend that the product be used with in 5 years from the date of manufacture. Consult your local Shell Company for details. Accept for use new Shell CASSIDA® Fluid DC only if the manufacturer’s seal is intact. Before opening the pack ensure the area around the closure is clean. It is recommended that it be cleaned with Shell CASSIDA® Fluid PL and/or potable water and then dried with a clean cloth before opening. Record the date the seal was broken. To prevent product contamination, always close the package after use. Upon opening a pack, the product must be used within 2 years (or within 5 years of date of manufacture, whichever is the sooner).
Food contact Registered by NSF as 3H, H1, and HT 1, the product meets the USDA guidelines (1998) for lubricants for use where direct contact with food can occur and is also suitable for uses where there is a potential for incidental food contact. Made only from substances permitted under the US FDA Title 21 CFR 172.878, 178.3570, 178.3620. Although this product is approved for direct contact applications, Shell recommends that care should be taken to minimize the amount of the material coming into contact with foodstuffs. JECFA has recommended that the allowable daily intake for this type of product be limited to no more than 6 mg/kg body weight – which for an average individual would correspond to an average of 120 ppm maximum in foodstuffs. In location and/or applications where local legislation does not specify maximum concentration limits, Shell recommends that this same 120 ppm limit be observed. Shell CASSIDA® Fluid DC will not impart undesirable taste, odor or color to food, nor will cause adverse health effects. Consistent with good manufacturing practice, use should be minimized and appropriate corrective action should be taken in the event of detection of excessive contamination of food by Shell CASSIDA® Fluid DC.
