he Army is getting a redesigned combat uniform, with tweaked detailing and accessories, which will gradually be absorbed into soldiers’ existing wardrobes. While some of the changes are subtle, one change is significant: the print. The new print uses darker colors than the current patterns, and blobs, rather than pixel shapes. Why should this matter to those who are not part of the Army, or whose camouflage of choice might be denim, or a navy single-breasted suit, or a sleeveless shift dress? Mostly because of the trickle-down effect. The building blocks of military style — from the wool greatcoat to cargo pants — have long been absorbed into designers’ vernacular. The influence is especially relevant today, as unisex or gender-free dressing is sweeping collections from Gucci to Public School. As a result, what happens in Natick labs — the organization responsible for developing and testing all equipment, except weaponry and communications — has an outsize effect on what happens in fashion week. Nowhere is this more obvious than when it comes to camouflage, which, perhaps more than specific items or silhouettes, has captured the fashion imagination. Every few seasons, it seems, cam-

ressing a bump is fun, there’s no doubt. It’s a rare time when our proportions get flipped around and a bulging belly is something to show off rather than disguise.

But that full belly is actually a fairly short blip in the whole process — a process that presents new challenges for dressing with each phase. And don’t forget about after the birth and the possibility of months of nursing. With that in mind, here are some pieces to get you through the early months, those big-belly days and beyond — when you need all the help you can get.

EARLY DAYS Is she? Isn’t she? No one wants to ask. Let people off the hook by sporting the Thug Life Preggers Shirt ($28 at thuglifeshirts.com), a tongue-in-cheek design that’s also fun for announcement photos. Forget trying to use safety pins or other tricks to keep your pants up, and invest early in a great pair of maternity jeans and a supportive pair of leggings.
