Snake Charmer    Grade Level: 3    Strand: Matter and Materials    Topic: Magnetic and Charged Materials    General Expectations:  ‐ demonstrate an understanding of the properties of materials that can be magnetized or charged and of  how materials are affected by magnets or static electric charges  ‐   Specific Expectations:  ‐ compare different materials by measuring their magnetic strength or the strength of their electric  charge  ‐ identify, through observation, pairs of materials that produce a charge when rubbed together    Materials Needed  ‐ Tissue Paper      ‐  A marker  ‐ A plastic ruler      ‐ scissors  ‐ A scrap piece of nylon fabric    Procedure  1. Copy a coiled snake pattern on a piece of tissue paper and cut it out. (repeat for desired number of  snakes).  2. Hold the snake by the head to make a spring tailed snake (looks like a pigs tail).  3. Rub a plastic ruler several times with a scrap piece of nylon.  4. Wave the ruler close to the snakes without touching them.  The snakes will rise to the ruler.    Scientific Principle    Static electricity is formed by rubbing certain materials together.  When two complementary objects are  rubbed together tiny invisible particles called electrons move from one object to the other giving each object an  electric charge.  The object that looses electrons has an opposite charge to the object that gains them.    In this case the electrons are removed from the nylon on to the plastic ruler, creating static electricity.   The tissue paper is slightly short of electrons, therefore when the charged ruler is close enough, the tissue paper  snakes move toward the ruler so that it can “grab” the extra electrons.    References    Angliss, Sarah.  (2001) Hands‐On Science Electricity and Magnets.  Kingfisher Publications, New York, New York.   p. 6‐7.    Opportunities and Other Considerations  ‐ In our experience the nylon fabric did not create a strong enough charge to lift the snakes with the ruler.   Another effective method would be to rub a balloon on a fleece blanket and then hold the charged  balloon over the snakes to make them rise and stick to the balloon.  ‐ Be sure that there are no latex allergies in your class before using the balloon.
