Teacher: Karen Swan Subject Area: Spanish Grade Level: 2nd year high school Spanish Unit Title: Preterit and Imperfect Lesson Title: “Blancanieves y los siete enanitos” Objectives: • Distinguish between when the preterit and imperfect forms should be used with 80% accuracy. (1.2: Students demonstrate an increasing understanding of the cultural nuances of meaning in written and spoken language as expressed by speakers and writers of the target language in formal and informal settings.) • Use the past tenses to retell a simplified fairy tale of 10+ sentences with 75% accuracy. (3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.) Materials/Resources Needed: • Knowledge of preterit and imperfect conjugation patterns • Knowledge of the fairy tales and the basic structure they follow • Background with Snow White • Pieces of the story to read • Sentences for practice • Paper, pen/pencil Anticipatory Set: • Ask students: o ¿Cuáles son sus cuentos de hadas de favoritos? o ¿Conozcan ustedes el cuento de Blancanieves y los siete enanitos? Objective/Purpose: • Explain to students that we will be reading the story “Blancanieves y los siete enanitos,” with particular attention paid to the preterit and imperfect tenses and the conditions under which they are used. Input: • Read “Blancanieves y los enanitos” as a class, identifying verbs forms and vocabulary words as it progresses. Model: 1. Put up the slide presentation of pictures and pass out slips of paper with parts of the story written on them.
2. Explain that on each slip is a part of the story, but that the verb in the sentence is not conjugated. As each student reads his/her part of the story, they need to conjugate the verb in the tense provided: I for the imperfect tense, P for the preterit tense. 3. Flip through the slides as the story progresses, calling attention to new vocabulary. 4. As the story progresses, have the students repeat the conjugated verbs as they are read. This will also give an opportunity to correct any mistakes that made or allow students to ask questions. Check for Understanding: • After the story is over ask students o what they thought of the evil queen (motivations, etc.) o their opinion of Snow White’s actions in taking something from a stranger o what they would do in the hunter’s shoes: kill the girl or let her go o their thoughts about the dwarves decision to let her stay Guided Practice: • Put up a slide (or pass out a hand out) with selected sentences from the story, each representing a different use of the preterite and imperfect • Have the students justify why one past tense was used instead of the other. o Ex: “The preterite is used here because of x, y, and z, and here’s an example to explain what I mean.” Closure: • Draw a chart on the board with preterite on one side and imperfect on the other. Have the student give suggestions as to the situations that each of the tenses are used, providing examples of each from the sentences in the guided practice or the story itself. • Once the students have given examples and justifications, go through the uses with them while filling in the blanks of anything they might have missed or got incorrect. Independent Practice: • Write a simplified version of a fairy tale in 10+ sentences using both forms of the past tense. 80% of the verbs must be in the correct conjugation and the correct tense.
