ROPOKAI AND AMBONAI In Warompen, there was a big snake lived in Yeripol river, Ropokai. It came up when it was hungry and would eat anything it found-people and animals. One day, after killing four men looking for fishes in the river, Ropokai disappeared. It hide itself in the cave under the river. ”It must stop!” said one of the older man. ”Let’s ask Ambonai to help us.” Ambonai was a famous hunter in Irian. He was bigger, taller and stronger than any other men in Irian. All of the animals in the forest were afraid of him. After heard the men’s story, Ambonai told the Warompen villagers to build a very big ship that can carry villagers leave the village. After that, Ambonai will kill Ropokai for them. Two days after the villagers left, Ropokai was hungry again. It came up but he found nobody and nothing! He was screaming very angrily. Soon, Ambonai who was waiting for his appearance, threw the club (=galah) into its open mouth. Ropokai couldn’t close his mouth. Ambonai threw the big stones into it. The snake couldn’t move his head anymore. At last, the hero poured hot water on its head. Ropokai struggled for some time and then he was quiet. The wicked snake was dead. 1.
