November 5, 2017 Dear Parishioners: This past Friday and Saturday we celebrate the life of Sr. Stella Maria. The overwhelming number of people who came to pay their respect and celebrate her life is a testimony to the positive influence she had over all of her students as a teacher and principal.

These celebrations of her life could not have been possible without the input of some many people. I want to express a word of thank you to Sr. Enda and the Daughters of Mary and Joseph for their guidance in putting together the liturgies. A special thanks goes out to Fr. Tom Gibbons, who led the number of preparation meetings, as well as Rick Billups, Sue Bjelajac, Chris Walker and Lisa Wellik for the beautiful and prayerful liturgies. And last but not least, a big thank you to the all members of PWC, especially Cari Hilger, and Jill Plumb and the countless number of parents who provided the elegant receptions. Thank you to all. Once again I think this Irish poem entitled "Remembered Joy” sums up what Sr. Stella would say to us now: “I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways. Of happy times and laughing time and bright and sunny days. "I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun, Of happy memories that I leave when life is one.” Have a great week. Fr. Daniel

In order to ensure that we are reaching our homebound we need to do two things: (1) we need to know the names of parishioners who are homebound and who wish to receive communion on Sundays and (2) we need to have a core of Eucharistic Ministers who are willing after a Sunday Mass to take communion to these parishioners. If you are interested in becoming a part of this most needed ministry, please call the office. They will compile a list of EM’s who are interested in this ministry. Also, if you know of any parishioner who is homebound and wishes to receive the Eucharist on Sundays, please let them know. They will compile a list with their name, address and phone number. This information will be passed on to Lisa Wellik. Training will be provided by Lisa and Fr. Tom, Fr. Jerry and Fr. Daniel.

Strategic Planning Project: This past Spring the parish and

school embarked on a Strategic Planning project. In order to chart a more unified vision and plan for our future as a strong and vibrant Catholic Community, together we are in the initial stage of this process. The independent consulting firm of Phillips & Associates will guide us through this process, with the support of a committee of volunteers from the St. Paul’s community: Bill Thomason, Chair; Father Daniel McCotter, Pastor; Father Tom Gibbons, Parochial Vicar; Rick Billups, Principal; Alicia Anderson, Chair of the Finance Council; Mary BertoneTangney, Former-Chair of the School Board; and Eddy Karyadi, Chair of Pastoral Council. In the comings weeks we will attempt to gain input from all members of St. Paul’s community so please stay tuned for updates as we embark on this very important undertaking. If you have any questions, please ask one of these committee members. We are looking forward to working together through this process Volunteers needed for SPA’s 11th Annual Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe Monday, Dec. 11th 7:00 pm Vigil Mass Are you the best volunteer for Our Blessed Mother? Times are difficult for so many. The finance council and the parish staff have discussed how best the parish can respond to the increased need that we are experiencing through phone inquiries, walk-ins and the increased requests from various charitable agencies. Since September 2009, the parish has been giving 5% of the weekly collection to a charity.

DID YOU KNOW Background Checks With school starting again, it’s likely that your children are participating in a variety of after-school activities. Many school sports and club programs are run by volunteers, often parents with kids of their own in the school. It’s important that the school or program takes measures to protect all students, but as parents, it’s critical that you follow up and confirm that the proper checks have been done. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles uses fingerprinting as its core background check. All persons, whether paid or volunteer, who have regular contact with minors or vulnerable adults are fingerprinted.

November 5, 2017 Profile of Paolo L. Puccini, C.S.P. Paolo L. Puccini, C.S.P. is doing his Pastoral Year in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a native of Houston, Texas and prior to joining the Paulists he was a mechanical engineer traveling internationally for three years. Paolo was impacted by the ministry of the Paulist Fathers as an undergraduate student at The University of Texas at Austin. He believes personal encounters with priests and the ministry are the best to help those discerning the priesthood. Attending a Come-and-See weekend in his senior year of college and then again years later, after having worked as an engineer, helped to broaden his understanding of the Paulist mission and ministries. In the midst of discernment, Paolo realized how many wonderful friends and mentors were in his life to help him discover how he could serve God. As a result, he wants to do the same for others when he becomes a priest. Please continue to pray for Paolo L. Puccini, C.S.P. and all our Paulist Seminarians.

___________________________________________________ Profile of Evan Bernard Cummings, C.S.P. Evan Bernard Cummings, C.S.P. is entering his third year of theology in Seminary. He is from Clearfield, Utah and before joining the Paulists Fathers he was a student at Utah State University working on a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. He was called to the charism of the Paulist Fathers, in particular the ecumenical dialogue and missionary preaching. His advice to others discerning the priesthood is to speak with seminarians close to your age. They can answer questions that are most likely similar to the ones they had when discerning. The Come-andSee weekend helped him discover what the “average” day of a seminarian and priest is like. Saturday, November 10th Couples: married, engaged or serious learn how to deepen and enjoy their relationship more at the talk by Jackie François and Bobby Angel, authors of Forever, A Catholic Devotional for Your Marriage, which leads couples in prayer together and helps them grow in loving freely, totally, faithfully and fruitfully. Their free lecture at 3:00 p.m. will be followed by a question and answer period, prayer together and book-signing. Join us at Pauline Books & Media, 3908 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City, CA 90230. For more information call us at 310-397-8676.

One interesting tidbit about Evan is that he loves Legos. He could spend hours building things, taking them apart, and putting them back together again. Please continue to pray for Evan Bernard Cummings, C.S.P. and all our Paulist Seminarians.
