MADE IN GERMANY

RESPONSIBILITY FOR PEOPLE AND ASSETS

NORBERT FIGGE, ARCHITECT, DETLEFSEN&FIGGE ARCHITECTURE FIRM, KIEL

Fire protection means preventing the outbreak and spread of fire and smoke. The protection of health and life is of utmost importance to the people located within the building. That’s why specific requirements on fire resistance period and fire behaviour, based on a classification of the type and usage of the building, need to be fulfilled. The objective is to provide the rescue and fire fighting teams with a sufficiently safe environment to evacuate the people from the building and, where applicable, bring any valuable objects to safety. The quality of the building materials used often plays a decisive role in determining whether a fire is able to spread unhindered or is contained at the seat of the fire and able to be extinguished quickly and successfully.

In the case of German public buildings, the properties of escape routes is regulated on the basis of the fire protection ordinances of the German Länder. These stipulate, for example, that the escape routes must remain intact and smoke-free for a specified period of time. They must not contain any flammable building materials or furnishings and must be segregated into individual fire zones. By rigorously adhering to the fire protection ordinances during planning and implementation, lives can be saved and material and intangible damages minimized. AMF has been manufacturing special and certified fire protection systems for this purpose for several decades. AMF’s in-house and field technicians can provide support both in the planning and implementation phase of any building project that has fire protection requirements.

Structural fire protection

Independent fire protection

Structural fire protection involves classifying the suspended ceiling together with the soffit and the grid installation as a whole. AMF THERMATEX ceilings achieve building component classifications of F30 to F120 depending on the type of soffit. We have developed special fire protective ceilings for certain applications:

Independent fire protection ceilings are tested for their fire resistance period irrespective of the type of soffit located above. They offer up to 30 minutes of fire protection from above and below:

FIRE CLASSIFICATION

Building material classification

The DIN EN 13501-1 standard is used to assess and classify building materials according to their fire behaviour.

The A2-s1,d0 class corresponds to the national building-regulation term: “non-combustible”.

It sets the requirements for the materials on the surface of building components, e.g. ceiling claddings, i.e. their behaviour when in direct contact with radiant heat or flames.

AMF THERMATEX panels are classified as A2-s1,d0 in accordance with DIN EN 13501-1 and are therefore “non-combustible”. The material class is mostly printed on the rear of the panel as well as on the packaging labels.

The classification into combustible and non-combustible building materials doesn‘t describe the intrinsic behaviour of the material. The behaviour under fire load depends on the surface type and form, the presence of bonding agents, the processing technique used, etc. The certifications are therefore only valid for the building material or composite building material actually tested. Other compositions can exhibit a less favourable fire behaviour.

4

Test certificates are available on request.

Building component classification

According to DIN EN 1365-2 (fire load from “below”) and DIN EN 1364-2 (fire load from “below” and “above”), not only are the suspended ceilings relevant to the achievement of the individual fire resistance classed but also the construction as a whole, i.e. the soffit located above, as well as installations such as light fittings, loudspeakers, anemometers, etc. that need to be suspended separately from the soffit.

The suspended ceiling and soffit should prevent the passage of fire and temperature for as long as possible. This time is called the fire resistance period, e.g. > 30 minutes. This fire resistance period is defined in the fire resistance classes and determined on the basis of DIN EN 1363-1 in consideration of the criteria for testing.

Under Timber Joists The AMF F90 functional ceiling under timber joists or trapezoidal decking is equally suited for installation in old buildings and modern industrial halls. Stringent demands on fire resistance are often made when renovating old buildings with timber roofs. Using the F90 functional ceiling as per certificate under timber you can achieve the fire resistance class F90, even for old buildings, without having to clad the timber joists. This ceiling is also outstandingly suited for installation under trapezoidal decking, as used in modern industrial buildings.

INDEPENDENT FIRE PROTECTION

Independent fire protection ceilings, for example, “light-weight suspended ceilings“, fulfil the requirements for fire protection from both the ceiling void (ceiling cavity) and from the underside of the ceiling. Installations like light fittings, manholes, loudspeakers, pictograms, etc. as well as all connections (such as connectors to light partitions, bulkheads, etc.) also need to be tested and classified.

AMF FIRE PROTECTION CEILINGS F30 Uno / + Metal F30 Dual + Metal F30 Mono

16

In the event of a fire emanating from the ceiling void (the most frequent fire load by the way), AMF fire protection ceilings protect the escape routes below for 30 minutes protected. These independent fire protection ceilings are rated and classified as “smoke proof“.

17

System solution

For fire loads from below, the fire resistance class of the „suspended ceiling only“ is valid for all ceiling and roof constructions located above.

A fire load is applied in the ceiling void. The ceiling or roof construction located above must have at least the same F- class.

The biggest advantage of System F30 Uno is its fire protection capacity from above and below. When a fire attack occurs from above, i.e. from the ceiling void, the lifesaving escape routes remain free of smoke and heat. When a fire attack occurs from below, the services in the ceiling void are protected.

Construction

The AMF System F30 Dual fire protection ceiling fulfils all the building component classification requirements as per DIN 4102 and EN 1364-2 both from above, the void, and from below, in the case of room fires. They therefore take into consideration the often neglected fire hazard arising from the presence of materials such as electrical cables, conduits and data cables in the ceiling void, some of which can be highly flammable. This ready-to-install system eliminates time-consuming and costly installation work. Attachment of the modular elements to solid walls or light partitions is fast and trouble-free - even for extra long spans - thanks to shadow trims. Installation options include tested and firesafe integrated lighting systems.

For rooms and corridors with a width greater than 2500 mm it is possible to use a parallel bandraster construction both with solid and light walls. Bandraster profiles of 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 mm width can be used. In applications such as this the bandraster profiles should be installed with AMF strips and mineral wool. This construction type also allows trouble-free access to the ceiling void by removal of the AMF module elements. A swing-down construction is also possible using a special bandraster.

Construction The AMF System F30 Mono fire protection ceiling is an independent system that offers optimum safety and economy. This means that in the event of a fire in the ceiling void, the System F30 Mono fire protection ceiling will protect the life-saving escape routes below; conversely - in the event of a fire from below - it will protect the services installed in the ceiling void.
