ENG 101 Catalog Description ENG 101 English Composition & Literature I 3 credits This course focuses on how to develop essential writing skills including organization, correctness, and support of ideas. A research project is required to produce a documented essay that integrates materials from Internet and traditional sources according to standard disciplinary format. Students develop and sharpen the interpretive and analytical skills necessary to evaluate the soundness and appropriateness of sources for their work. Prerequisite: ENG 100 or appropriate placement score. F/S/SU

ENG 101 Student Outcomes and General Education Learning Goals 1. The student will produce writing that is characterized by his/her own ideas and insights, demonstrating organization, correctness, and support. (General Education Goal: Communication skills) 

The student will create a clear thesis or main point that unifies the essay.



The student will use appropriate organization in the essay.



The student will use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.



The student will apply relevant support of the essay’s thesis.

2. The student will incorporate contents of course reading materials into own writing. (Gen Ed Goal: Communication Skills) 

The student will identify passages from course readings that are related to the student’s own idea.



The student will introduce and integrate quotations from sources.



The student will paraphrase relevant passages.



The student will follow the standard disciplinary format to cite the quoted and paraphrased material and to list a bibliography of sources used in each writing assignment.

3. The student will evaluate the soundness and appropriateness of found sources. (Gen Ed Goals: Communication Skills; Information Literacy) 

The student will identify the features of the college library’s online databases.



The student will use the library’s databases to locate sources for a research project.



The student will assess the authority, coverage, relevance, and objectivity of each source.

4. The student will produce a documented essay that effectively integrates materials from Internet and traditional sources according to standard disciplinary format. (Gen Ed Goals: Communication Skills; Information Literacy) 

The student will select a topic for research based on the instructor’s guidelines.



The student will develop a thesis that may be supported from relevant Internet and traditional sources.



The student will evaluate sources for their relevance and insight and select those most appropriate for the topic.



The student will integrate support from the sources in the research essay and document the sources according to standard disciplinary format.
