Teaching strategies for arts educators to impact learning

OVERVIEW Now more than ever we need to learn about student thinking in the arts through reflective practice. To support this practice, Studio Thinking within the Built Environment investigates the thinking behaviors, inclinations and skills developed in the studio environment.

Who: 30 K-12 art specialists including dance, music, theater, media and visual art are invited to apply to participate in a three year project facilitated by the Chicago Teachers’ Center at NEIU, in partnership with the CPS Office of Arts Education. What: This exciting 3-year professional development series is centered on

emerging trends in Lois Hetland’s Studio Thinking Framework, which provides art teachers with the research-based language for describing what they intend to teach and what students actually learn. Participating teachers will also utilize American art in their instruction to develop concepts of citizenship and cultural diversity. And finally, the physical design and function of the studio will be addressed to ensure that the space is supporting optimal learning.

APPLICANT INFORMATION

Where: Workshops will be held at the Chicago Teachers’ Center, 770 N.

Halsted, 4th (Chicago and Halsted, free parking available). Eligible Applicants: K-12 full-time art teachers (visual, music, media arts, theater, and dance) working in one building. By January 2012, art teachers will be required to identify a partner content teacher in their building to collaborate with on arts-integrated units. Award Amount: Participating teachers will be paid $25 per hour for participation in professional development workshops. The project provides classroom resources and materials for related school-based work. Applicants Commit To: Participation in professional development workshops throughout the three-year project, planning and implementation of four arts-integrated units, collecting student reflections and rubrics, observations by project staff, and contributions to local and national on-line conversations and postings. Teachers commit to a willingness to transform their studio and/or classroom learning environments.

When: Weekdays after school, 4- 7pm: September 2011- July 2014. How: Participants will use on-line resources to post lessons and converse with
