Fundamental change in society Universities face broader/ complex set of demands Entering revolutionary period Require organizational adaptations

GOING TO UNIVERSITY IS AN INVESTMENT Soft skills can be trained before graduate To train the soft skills, academic and non academic activities must be balanced Not only graduate with mere a title

OPINION “The importance of science and knowledge gained from the lectures are high, especially in the beginning of one‟s career. The next step, the soft skills are more important. The higher the position, the more sophisticated soft skills are needed.” Zulkifli Zaini Direktur Distribution Network PT Bank Mandiri Civil Engineering ITB Alumni, „75

ORGANIZATION SKILL: TIME MANAGEMENT If you live for 60 years, then: Sleeping 8 hrs/day  total 20 years. Watching TV 2 hrs/day  total 5 years. Eating (3 times) 2 hrs/day  total years. Trapped in traffic jam 3 hours/day  total 7.5 years HOW MUCH TIME LEFT TO CREATE YOUR LIFE?

LEADERSHIP:

STRUCTURAL LEADER VS RELATIONAL LEADER Structural Leader:  “BOSS” due to structural position  Not necessarily able to lead Relational Leader:  Actively involved in the team  Has innovative ideas  Has initiative for positive change

ANYBODY CAN BE A RELATIONAL LEADER!

LOGIC  CREATIVE THINKING: DIFFERENCES OF TASKS IN THE CLASS & REAL PROBLEMS TASKS IN THE CLASS

REAL PROBLEMS

Already solved many times by different persons.

Not yet solved

Motivation to solve the problems is not high. No serious implication, except bad marks.

High motivation to solve, because will create other problems if not solved.

Almost all information is available.

Some information is not available, and sometimes, not valid.

Rules and theory can be applied No detailed solution to solve the to solve the problems. problems.

WHY CREATIVE THINKING? Because, in the real world, the problems are “NOT STANDARD”

EFFORT: ABILITY & WILL TO LEARN

WORK TOGETHER

“Our success depends on others too, unless you want to be a solo violist.” William G. McGowan, MCI Group

87% persons who lost their jobs or stuck in their career are because they do not have work ethic D.P. Beach, 1982

HOW TO ACHIEVE?

Tools: COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

Learning method in small group: at various performance levels interaction between individual

NEW PARADIGM  Students are the subject, with different condition and characteristics  They have the rights to get any chance to develop their potentials.  Learning will be effective when they are actively involved during the learning process and in the context where the knowledge will be applied  Learning can be done wherever, whenever, from whosever possible.

Changing Paradigm in TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Teaching (teacher centered) Learning (student centered)

Traditional vs. Active Learning Traditional Methods  Instructor-led  Instructor contains knowledge, student lacks knowledge  Develops memorization skills  Instructor controls the pace of learning  Student less likely to retain knowledge over a period of time

Active Learning  Student-centered  Instructor utilizes student’s experiences & current knowledge  Develops critical thinking skills  Student helps control the pace of learning  Student more likely to use and retain knowledge over a period of time

Proliteracy and The UPS Foundation Increasing Intensity of Instruction Project

MOVING FORWARD ANALYTICAL Draw the major parts of an animal cell, and explain what the parts do

CREATIVE Write a story (or play) using characters representing the parts of an animal cell, and describe a potential conflict PRACTICAL Find a system in the world around you that mimics the activities and relationship in an animal cell, and explain it.

I hear, and I forget; I see, and I remember; I do, and I understand. - Confucious May 22-23, 2006
