Course Description: This course is designed for students with NO previous knowledge, or very limited knowledge, of the Spanish language. Strong emphasis will be placed on acquiring conversational and comprehension skills, using practical and interesting situational materials that will stress both language and culture. Grammatical patterns and syntax will be introduced with the aim that students read and write what they have learned to say and understand. (This course is not open to native Spanish speakers or to students with more than two years of Spanish in high school, except by instructor approval. ATTENTION: Rutgers will only accept SPAN 101 credits from students with two or more years of high school Spanish if the transferring student completes a Brookdale degree. Students with two or more years of high school Spanish transferring without graduating from Brookdale will not receive transfer credit for SPAN 101 from Rutgers. It is advised that if you have previously studied Spanish and want to transfer a BCC SPAN 101 class to an institution other than Rutgers, you should consult with the Admissions Office of your transferring institution to learn about their policy.)

DEPARTMENT POLICIES: ● A student must attain at least a C average (70%) on tests in order to receive a C in the class. Homework and participation points will not raise a D grade. ● A student who receives less than a C as a final grade may not continue on to the next level. RE-TESTING If you do not pass an oral or written test/quiz the first time you take it, you may re-take it one more time. The procedure for re-taking is as follows: 1. Work with your instructor or Learning Assistant Frank Prignoli on the test you failed. 2. Obtain a re-test permission slip from your instructor. 3. Go to the testing center, present the slip, and make sure you are given the version of the test which is noted on your pass. * You will need a BCC ID to use the Testing Center. PLEASE NOTE: Re-testing is designed to help those who fail a test or a quiz. The maximum grade that can be achieved on a re-test is 79%. GRADE:  Your final grade will be based on the number of points you have received on the above criteria. However, you must have accumulated 210 points on the tests and quizzes (equivalent to 70%) before any homework, attendance, or participation points are added to your grade.  Any student who averages 65%-69% on tests and quizzes (that is, 195 to 209 pts) will receive a “D” grade for the course. Homework, attendance and participation pts will not raise the “D” grade.  Incomplete (INC) may be assigned at the discretion of the course faculty for students who have extraordinary circumstances of documented hardship or emergency. These are students who have been actively participating throughout the term and have completed a significant portion of the course in a satisfactory manner but approach the end of the term without completing all assignments. The following process should be followed: July, 2017

4 The student contacts the faculty member with the appropriate documentation.  The incomplete contract is completed by the faculty member and must be signed by both the faculty member and the student.  Students will be notified by email to check their grades and to speak to their counselor about the impact of the incomplete.  All course work should be completed by the twenty-first (21st) day after the end of the current semester or term, exclusive of official College closings.  When a student completes the work satisfactorily, the faculty member will submit a change of grade.  If work is not completed satisfactorily, the Registrar will change the INC to an F. Students will be notified by e-mail.  For the purpose of calculating academic standing, the INC will be treated as an F.
