ARE 100A

Textbook: Jeffrey Perloff, Microeconomics: Theory and Applications with Calculus Course Content and Objectives. This is the second in a two-quarter sequence of courses in intermediate microeconomics theory. In ARE 100A, the theory of production, consumption, and market equilibrium was analyzed under the hypothesis of perfect competition. This course relaxes the assumption of perfect competition. In addition, factor markets and their linkage to product markets are explored, and the theoretical frameworks for examining externalities and public goods are introduced. Grading : There will be one midterm and a comprehensive final examination. Exams will have a mixture of problem solving and short answer questions. There will be approximately five problem sets with questions similar to those on the exams. You can form study groups of 1-4 people to solve and write up the homework, turning in one copy for which all group members receive the same grade. Homework must be turned to the TA by the beginning of lecture on the due date– late homeworks receive zero credit. Grading weights are: Midterm: 30% Final: 40%

Homeworks: 30% Missed exams and homework:  No excuses will be accepted for late or missing homeworks. 

If you miss an exam due to an emergency or illness, you will be required to provide a written proof.

Scheduled events such as University-approved curricular and extra-curricular activities should be reported during the first week of the course.

Class website: The class webpage is on Smartsite. Class materials are posted there. Discussion sections: Attendance is highly recommended because answers to problem sets, exams and additional applications will be covered.
