Report on PARTHENIUM AWARENESS WEEK 2016 organized by AICRP Weed Management Unit, TNAU, Coimbatore Parthenium hysterophorus, a noxious weed of global significance responsible for severe human and animal health issues, such as dermatitis, asthma and bronchitis, and agricultural losses besides a great problem for biodiversity. To create awareness amongst the general public, farmers, school and college students and policy planners about the impact of the obnoxious parthenium weed and how to manage this weed, ‘Parthenium awareness week’ was observed between 16th and 22nd August 2016 at AICRP Weed Management Unit, Department of Agronomy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. In this connection a series of programmes viz., Parthenium Quiz and Essay competition among the Under Graduate Students of TNAU Main campus, Parthenium awareness demonstrations and awareness meetings were conducted with wide publicity about Parthenium, its ill effects and control. As first Programme of “Parthenium awareness week” (16th August, 2016), Essay competition was organized at the Department of Agronomy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore for the under graduate students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The Quiz competition on Parthenium related at subjects (17th August, 2016), was also organized at Department of Agronomy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore with Under Graduate students of different UG degree programmes at TNAU Main campus. Simultanously, Parthenium awareness programme was organized in the form exhibition and interactive meeting for more than 100 farmers at Marutheri village, Krishnagiri district. The programme was managed by Dr.C.Chinnusamy, Professor and Principal Investigator, Department of Agronomy, TNAU, Coimbatore, subsequently, (18th August, 2016), Parthenium awareness campaign was organized

Vazhavachanur, Thiruvannamalai District by Dr.C.Chinnusamy, Professor and Principal Investigator, AICRP Weed Management, along with Dr.P.Devasenapathy, Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy, TNAU, Coimbatore. In the event of “Parthenium awareness week”, on 19th August, 2016 a rally was organized in Divansapudur, Manakadavu, Pollachi by the Vanavarayar Institute of Agriculture (VIA), Manakadavu. This programme was inaugurated by Dr. M.Balusamy, Dean, VIA, Dr. P.Devasenapthy, Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy, TNAU, Coimbatore and Dr. C.Chinnusamy, Professor and PI, Dr.P.Murali Arthanari, and Dr.P.Janaki, Assistant Professors Department of Agronomy participated and explained about the Parthenium and its ill effects and management. In this rally, NSS volunteers took placards and banners and raised slogans about the ill-effects of Parthenium and its management options. They also involved in removing the Parthenium found in the roadsides and in the public utility areas of the village and distributing the pamphlets. Earlier, the students were explained about the Parthenium and its management in the college campus. Fifth day (20th August, 2016), a demonstration on parthenium management was organized for NSS volunteers of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. All the participated members were involved in uprooting of parthenium. In this programme the activities initiated by the Weed Control Unit, Department of Agronomy for the control of Parthenium was highlighted to participants and management of parthenium was demonstrated. Subsequently, a meeting was organized with displays and chemical kits for managing Parthenium. This programme was presided over by Dr. C.R.Anandakumar, Registrar, and felicitation address delivered by Dr. C.Jayanthi, Director (Directorate of Crop Management). Earlier, Dr. P.Devasenapathy, Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy welcomed the gathering and Dr.C.Chinnusamy, Professor and Principal Investigator; AICRP Weed Management explained the ill-effects of Parthenium and its management. The winners of Essay and Quiz competition have received the prices and Dr.P.Murali Arthanari; Assistant Professor (Agronomy) proposed the vote of thanks.

Sixth day (21st August, 2016) a field demonstration on parthenium and its management was organized for members and general public GV Residency, Residental area, Peelamedu, Coimbatore along with Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore. All the residents (more than 400 members) of GV residency area participated and they have educated with Parthenium and ill effects. In this programme the activities initiated by the AICRP Weed Management Unit, Department of Agronomy for the control of Parthenium was highlighted to participants and management of parthenium was demonstrated. Seventh day (22nd August, 2016), a special lecture, exhibition and demonstration on parthenium management was organized for NSS volunteers and students of Sree Saraswathi Thiagaraja College, Pollachi. Ln.T.Sethupathi, Secretary Sree Saraswathi Thiagaraja College welcomed the gathering and indicated the magnitude of infestation of partheinium in their area. Dr.C.Jayanthi, Director, Directorate of Crop Management, TNAU, Coimbatore has highlighted the importance of Parthenium Management and its impact on biodiversity and she also requested the students to remove the Parthenium wherever, they found. Dr.P. Devesenapathy, Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy, TNAU, Coimbatore has explained about the invasion of Parthenium in India. Dr.C.Chinnusamy, Professor and PI, AICRP Weed Management delivered lecture in the form of power point on “Parthenium and its Management”. Finally, in a demonstration, Dr.P.Murali Arthanari, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) explained about how to manage the parthenium through herbicides by live demonstration with hand operated sprayer. In addition, the programme on parthenium awareness was organized at Regional Research Station, Paiyur on 17th August, 2016. The staff and faculties of Agricultural Research Station, Bhavanisagar and farmers participated in this programme and

Dr.C.Chinnusamy, Principal Investigator, TNAU, Coimbatore. On 1st September, 2016, Parthenium Awareness Programme was organized at Ikkaraithattapalli, Velliampalayam vilalge, Bhavanisagar Block. Dr.P.Devasenapathy, Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy presided over the function,

Dr.N.K.Prabhakaran, Professor and Head, Agricultural Research Station, Bhavanisagar, Assistant and Deputy Directors of Agriculture, Erode, and Thiru.Nagaraj, President, Velliampalayam panchayat delivered special addresses. Dr.C.Chinnusamy, Professor (Agronomy) and PI, AICRP weed management welcomed gathering and highlighted the Parthenium management. Finally, Dr.P.Murali Arthanari, Assitant Professor (Agronomy) proposed the vote of thanks. Followed by, Rural Agriculture Work Experience group students of TNAU demonstrated the Parthenium compost making and then demonstration of chemical control of Parthenium were undertaken at farmers field at Ikkaraithattapalli. There were about 100 farmers have participated in the programme. On the same day, team of scientists from AICRP Weed Management along with Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy, Professor and Head, ARS, Bhavanisagar sensitized the students of about 550 school students and 20 teaching members, Government Higher Secondary School, Thottampalayam, Bhavanisagar about the ill effects of Parthenium and integrated management methods. In subsequent days, parthenium awareness meetings and demonstrations were organized by scientists of AICRP on weed management unit, Department of Agronomy at Corporation High School, TNAU Campus, Colleges in Coimbatore to create awareness among the Agriculture Diploma Students, farmers, farm workers, general public, School students and agricultural scientists. This series of meetings, awareness camps, rally cum demonstrations were carried out for the benefits of farmers, general public, students, farm labour and sanitary workers. In all these meetings and demonstrations, health hazards like skin disease, eye problem, asthma and effective management of parthenium in a concerted and sustained manner were explained.
