The AP Chemistry Exam Q: How many questions are on the exam?

A: The exam is divided into two sections. Section I has 75 multiple choice questions. Section II has 6 free-response questions.

A: NO.

A: Calculators are NOT allowed for the multiple choice section, but ARE allowed for questions 1 – 3 of the free response section.

Section I (multiple choice) and Section II (free response) are each 50% of the overall score.

Q: Is the exam timed? A: Yes, you are allowed 90 minutes for Section I (multiple choice) and 55 minutes for Section II, Part A (free response with calculators) and 40 minutes for Section II, Part B (free response without calculators) Q: What reference material is allowed on the exam? A: You will be given a Periodic Table to use on the entire exam. You will be given equation and constant tables as well as a table of standard reduction potentials for use on the free response section. Q: Are points deducted for incorrect answers? A: No. Points are awarded for correct answers, but not deducted for incorrect answers. It is to your advantage to answer EVERY question!

All multiple choice questions are equally weighted. The free response section contains 6 questions that are weighted as follows: Free Response # 1: 20% Free Response # 2: 20% Free Response # 3: 20% Free Response # 4: 10% Free Response # 5: 15% Free Response # 6: 15% (% of the free response portion of the exam)

Q: What is the best way to prepare for the exam? A: Study every day! Do not wait until the last minute! Review notes, study guides, and practice problems daily. Attend study sessions and ask for help as soon as you need it.
