'Ihey taught and researched "great German books" bilingually, establishing a new canon including 11lOmas Franz Kafka, and Rainer Maria Rilke, as well as current authors active in G'ruppe 47. it was no wonder, then, that Gruppe 47 thought it viable to meet at Princeton University.11 lhese two German-born groups worked in partial blindness in regard to their impact on U.S.-born Germanists and on world germanophOlle including German-American culture, and European communities with germanophone roots outside the Federal Republic. When U.S.-based emigre Germanists after the Second World War "rescued" German culture from its recent past, they also began to help U.S. Germanistik disassociate from its own past, from a distinctive U.S.-based tradition of Germanistik, and from the mainstream of literary and cultural studies in the United States, even as the most eminent of them, like Rene Wellek, were instrumental in founding the modern U.S. field of Comparative Literature.
