THE FASHION DEPARTMENT AT DOMUS ACADEMY THE LEARNING BY DESIGN PROCESS

Slide 1

Domus Academy’s Master courses in Fashion Design and in Accessories Design are both long-dated. The course in Fashion Design was born in 1983, one year after the founding of Domus Academy itself, while the course in Accessories Design was born in 2006, out of the 20-year teaching experience of the Fashion Design program. Since 2007 Domus Academy is part of Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda www.piattaformamoda.it

Both courses are at the centre of a Fashion System, which is unique all over the world and recognized at the international level, where the creativity of the designers, the production capacity, the quality of materials and manufacturing, the business ability and the innovations of both retail and communication are all integrated.

Slide 2

Italy, precisely Milan, becomes the setting of this unique experience, which allows to get in contact directly with this world, its main actors and events. In fact the location allows to perceive and analyse the evolution of a Fashion System among the most complex and articulated.

Slide 3

The two courses propose an integrated approach between creative, cultural, productive and marketing aspects. This is possible through a constant dialogue with the experts operating directly in these fields.

Slide 4

The young professionals have the chance to experience innovative creative methodologies, acquiring deep knowledge of the sector. The course is developed as a laboratory, where students are invited to express their own creative identity in line with the productive and corporate realities. Today, a fashion designer has to be manager and art director as well, being able to tackle the project from design, to product, communication and retail aspects.

Slide 5

Domus Academy’s Master courses in Fashion Design and in Accessories Design both last 11 months. At the beginning of the year the two courses share the same activities in terms of lectures and workshops, in order to integrate the students’ background. To nourish one’s creative identity, to develop a personal research methodology to translate into a design project: these are the challenges of our students.

Slide 6

Within this context, the importance of the exploration of several subjects, such as contemporary art, psychology of fashion, anthropology of fashion, socio-economic forecasting, the observation of the territory and visits to trade fairs, fashion shows and manufacturing companies is absolutely relevant and constantly updated keeping in mind the social, commercial and methodological evolution of the Fashion System.

Slide 7

The students are not just asked to develop a design project, but a whole pathway, showing their strategic capabilities in using concept and research tools applied to the project. In this respect, the collaboration with fashion designers and companies as project leaders of the workshops represents the key to build a path, which is closer to the philosophy of the laboratory than to the traditional teaching structure.

Slide 8

After the first months of shared experience, the two courses take separate pathways: The Master course in Fashion Design focuses on the design of collections in different areas of the fashion world; The Master course in Accessories Design explores three different areas: footwear, leathergoods and jewelry.

Slide 9

All workshops are organized in collaboration with external project leaders – internationally renown fashion and accessorie Interested in the fresh, international and innovative vision of the students to get new stimuli to nourish their identity.

The last three months of the course are dedicated to the final master project.
