Welcome to the ALPHI Guide to Apprenticeships and Foundation Learning The Guide has been developed by the Association of Learning Providers for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (ALPHI) to support head teachers, careers co-ordinators, Connexion’s staff, Year 11 Heads and anyone else who has a responsibility for ensuring that young people are aware of the full 14 – 19 offer. In The Guide you will find information (all in one place) on work based learning and the providers (colleges and private training organisations) that deliver it. WBL providers are set to play a key role in contributing to the diverse range of provision needed to support the Raising of the Participation Age. Please use The Guide to help you ensure that your learners are aware of the full range of work based learning available to them. We do hope that you find The Guide useful and look forward to working with you in the future. In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the Association of Learning Providers (ALPHI) has become the network through which training providers can work collaboratively to share good practice, events and activities and to facilitate joint tendering for available funds. The purpose of working as a network is to drive up the quality of provision in the area. Members of the network are colleges, private training organisations and charities who all deliver work based learning including Foundation Learning and Apprenticeships. The network seeks to be an active, well respected group who work continually to raise the profile of work based learning in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Together as a network we can give work based learning the profile it deserves and in so doing ensure that learners have the breadth of choice to meet their needs and to support them to make the right career choices.

Alphi’s Mission...

Our mission is to work together to ensure that work based learning in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is the best it can be. To ensure that employers feel that Apprenticeships meet the needs of their business and that young people know the choices that are available to them.

Raising the Participation Age The Education and Skills Act (2008) places a duty on all young people to participate in education or training until their 18th birthday (or until they achieve a Level 3 qualification). The legislation Raises the Participation Age (known as RPA) in two stages: • From 2013, young people to stay on until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17 • From 2015, to stay on until their 18th birthday Raising the participation age does not mean young people must stay in school; they will be able to choose one of the following options:

• • •

full-time education, such as school, college or home education work-based learning, such as an Apprenticeship full-time work with part-time education or training

As a network of providers we are keen to ensure that all young people understand fully what an Apprenticeship is and also that there are a wide variety of Apprenticeships to choose from. Armed with this information we hope to encourage more young people that an Apprenticeship is a valid and respected career route which can lead to Higher Apprenticeships and Higher Education.

About Foundation Learning...

Foundation Learning Foundation Learning has been designed for young people, aged 16-19, who want to progress onto Apprenticeships, further education or employment, through training and work experience. Foundation Learning combines Functional Skills qualifications and training, in maths, English and I.C.T., with Vocational Learning and Personal & Social Development. 16–19 year olds can apply directly to their local training provider by phoning to arrange an interview, booking in person or through the provider’s web-site. However, many of our young people are usually referred by their local Connexions centre, other support agencies or through careers information and events from school.

What can you expect from the programme? If learners complete their Foundation Learning programme they will leave with: • Functional and vocational qualifications • Improved social and communication skills • Work experience (in many cases) • Progression into their choice of career.

4 | www.alphi.org.uk

Delivery staff will work with learners to discuss their existing skills and qualities and identify additional qualifications that will boost their search for employment or further education and training. Learners can work towards Level 1 vocational qualifications and Functional Skills from Entry Level to Level 2. Foundation Learning also encourages learners to work towards a ‘Certificate in Progression’. This is made up of different units, relevant to each learner’s career and can include Health & Safety, Teambuilding and Citizenship units.

How long is the programme? There is an initial induction period (between 2-6 weeks) in order to set the learners Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and decide on their main programme target. The programme can then be extended for a further 16 weeks in order to complete their goals, qualifications, placements or to improve their skills. The learners programme will last, on average, between 18 – 22 weeks, depending on their career or progression aim. Learners will be expected to attend training for a minimum of 16-20 hours per week which will relate to their individual training timetable.

Championing Young People’s Learning

An Apprenticeship is an opportunity to learn real vocational skills whilst earning a real wage. An Apprentice will work towards nationally recognised qualifications through a combination of on-the-job learning and day or block release (depending on the employer requirements and the training provider). Both the Apprentice and their employer will be supported by a training provider (college or private training organisation) throughout the Apprenticeship and there is often Government funding available to help pay for the training (depending on the age of the candidate). Recognised Apprenticeship frameworks exist in over 180 skill areas. A framework will usually include a range of qualifications such as Functional Skills (or Key Skills), an NVQ or practical qualification and a Technical Certificate (a more theoretical qualification). An Apprenticeship can take between one and three and half years, depending on the qualifications studied and the vocational area. Apprenticeships exist on three levels: • Apprenticeship – Level 2 – equivalent to about 5-8 GCSEs at grades A*-C • Advanced Apprenticeship – Level 3 – equivalent to 2/3 full A Levels • Higher Apprenticeship – Level 4/5 – currently being piloted and includes HNC, HND or Foundation Degree Progression after an Apprenticeship could be to a higher level Apprenticeship or to further academic/vocational study, including a full degree.
