Running title: Effects of ginseng berry extract on blood coagulation 1

ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT 26

Abstract

27

Purpose: The present study investigated the effect of ginseng berry hot water extract (GBx)

29

on blood flow via regulation of lipid metabolites and blood coagulation in rats fed a high-fat

30

diet (HFD). Methods: Sixty rats were divided into five groups in descending order of body

31

weight. Except for the control (CON) group, the other four groups were fed a HFD

32

containing 45% kcal from fat for 11 weeks without GBx. GBx groups were then additionally

33

treated by gastric gavage with GBx dissolved in distilled water at 50 (GBx 50), 100 (GBx

34

100), or 150 (GBx 150) mg/kg body weight for 6 weeks along with the HFD. To investigate

35

effects of GBx on rats fed a HFD, biochemical metabolite and blood coagulation assay, and

36

histological analysis were performed. Results: In the experiments to measure the serum

37

levels of leptin, apolipoprotein (apo) E, and apoB/A, GBx treatment attenuated the HFD-

38

induced increases in these metabolites (P
