I am writing this on a snowy February day and there are no vehicles on the street. As I watch the snow coming down, I begin to ponder why people buy Jaguars. Grace, Space and Pace are words synonymous with Jaguar cars from the time Sir William Lyons began his business. From the post war sedans and sports cars, through the XK’s, E-types, XJS models, XK8s, XKs, and now the F-types, the Jaguar car has stirred something in us all. Beauty and performance is the hallmark for this marque. We have all been in conversations when people have said you need two Jaguars because one is always in the shop. We have heard Lucas stories, too. This usually comes from someone who has never owned a Jaguar. The fact is, Jaguars are now as reliable as any car on the road. There were questions when British Leyland and the British government were involved but that was between 4 and 5 decades ago. Jaguar quality went up when Ford bought the company. Jim Morton once told me that Ford called in all the suppliers and made suggestions as to how they might improve their products. They listened and then went back to doing things the way they always did before. Subsequently, Ford called them in the next year and told them they would have to adopt their suggestions or lose the Jaguar account. From that time they cooperated and the quality began an upward move to the current level of quality that the Tata Motor Company has achieved. Why a Jaguar? It is not the most economical car or most utilitarian vehicle available in the market. Likewise, it is not the most expensive or ostentatious vehicle on the market. It is the ride and handling (Grace), luxury of the Jaguar interior (Space), the performance and the speed (Pace) which exhilarates us. During the car show season, we enjoy placing our cats on the field with other cars whether the same make or with others. We are approaching spring when the cars come out to play. The older cars excite us and the newer ones captivate us. There are several new models coming to the company line up. There will be a sport crossover, named the F-Pace. There will be a 6-speed manual transmission option for the F-Type and an AWD option, too. The XE, an entry level car to compete with the BMW 3 series, will be available in the near future. The April issue of Car and Driver could not stop gushing over (Continued on page 3)

the test drive they did with the new XE. A whole new line up of engines is coming including a US bound diesel. Look for an opportunity to see the new models at the Jaguar dealers in our area. Be sure to tell them you are a member of the Carolina Jaguar Club and that you appreciate their support. Do the same when you bring your car in for service or buy a part or accessory. The dealers must know we support them and that we buy new and used Jaguars. We are their best customers and deserve consideration. Treasurer’s Report By Don Koepnick - Treasurer As of February 28th our year to date income is $3500 and our expenses total $6400. Our cash balance is $11000. The difference between income and expense is primarily due to a timing issue. We collect member dues for 2015 starting in November, and being on a cash accounting method, some 2015 dues income is posted in 2014. JCNA collects $30.00 per member and we pay that with one big check in February, so almost all of the 2015 dues expense Is posted then. It all evens out each year because this Nov and Dec we will have dues income and no dues expense. A complete financial report is available to any member upon request, just contact me at [email protected].

gage and rosewood dash as shown in the pictures below.

By Rob VanDewoestine Jaguar of Annapolis has been a major sponsor of the St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance for several years so it is not surprising to see distinctive Jaguars at that event. Held on the 18th fairway at the golf course at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay resort, the venue is very attractive and conveniently located next to the hotel and trailer parking. Now in its 9th year, St. Michaels is a relatively small event (65 cars) but attracts world class vehicles. The picture below shows the layout of the show field.

There is a group of new Jaguars in the lower right of the show field with the classic Jags just above them. Given the Jaguar dealer sponsorship and the desire to have distinctive vehicles at this event it is not surprising to find at least one Jaguar among the unique cars there. A particular standout in 2013 was a 1936 Jaguar SS100. Owned by Judge John C. North of St. Michaels, the early history of the car is not known, but it was apparently customized after the stunning one-off Saoutchik SS100 was built in 1938. The North’s SS100 is a very unusual Auber gene color and has alligator upholstery, matching lug-

Members of the CJC should consider filing an application to take a car to the St. Michaels Concours for late September 2015. The eastern shore of Maryland is fairly easy to access from North Carolina, the accommodations and location are those of a world class resort and the organizers of the event treat the participants exceptionally well (http://

The XJ Coupe would need to sit lower to the ground and have a little wider stance, but the heart and soul of the FType would need to be evident in the design.
