T HE N ORTHERN L IGHT M ARCH 2013 Special from Joy Zakrzewski , Chaplain - Scandia Village ". . . I was in prison and you visited me . . . " These words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew connect each of us in a profound way to the suffering of those who are a part of our criminal justice system, both to the victims of crime and to offenders. As Christians, it is when we begin to recognize this common suffering that God's healing justice can happen. Victims of crime may be too damaged to recognize it, and prisoners may be too full of rage and arrogance to see. But with the help of Jesus, we can see the suffering they have in common. And that is where ministry can begin. The people in prison are there because, as a society, we put them there. And many need to be there. But we cannot abandon them. As Christians we can see that what is needed is reconciliation. Not all of us are able to actually visit people in prison but we do have an opportunity to participate directly in the reconciliation that we are called to by the Gospel. We can send our books to prison. Many prison libraries in Wisconsin are dilapidated or out of date. A fresh supply of new books is desperately needed to support the recovery of those in prison. Thanks to the initiative of the Wisconsin Council on Library and Network Development (COLAN D) and the Wisconsin Libraries' Delivery Network, the WCC is inviting congregations throughout our state to collect and send books to our prisons. The Outreach Team of St. Luke's is inviting you, as part of your Lenten journey with Christ, to participate by bringing used books to be sent to Wisconsin prisons. During Lent we will collect recently-published_books from an approved list provided by the Department of Corrections (which will be available at church and is included in this article), package and deliver them to a local public library where they will be shipped to an intake facility in Madison for screening and distribution to prisons throughout the state. The season of Lent calls each of us to deeper commitment to Jesus and challenges us to examine our faith and how we live out that faith in our daily lives. Our journey with Jesus to the Cross is intimate and personal, but it is also communal, shared with those around us. Please review the list of books below and bring in your gently used books to give prison inmates an opportunity to learn and maybe even change. Desmond Tutu once said, "Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." Here's our chance to "overwhelm the world" one book at a time. Words from the Senior Warden By Judy Bush This month I’m returning to a “hat” that I wore years ago. Before I “retired,” I was the Administrator for Volunteer Ministries at our church in Madison. It was a wonderful job and put me in a place where I became very aware of the value of volunteers in the church setting. For all of us, our various ministries are a concrete way of serving our Lord here at St. Lukes, Sister Bay. In the best sense, we do these out of our love for Christ and our St. Luke’s family. We are a small group here with ministers/saints of “seasoned” years. There may be times when we feel a bit weary or over- burdened, but all of us depend upon each other for the smooth functioning of our parish. We are most blessed to have Mother Barb and Deacon Joy as our shepherds, but they must have the help of all of us in various ways: the newsletter, committees, attendance at classes and worship and participation in worship ministries to name a few. Many of us participate in worship in different roles, and we would love to have you also bring your abilities to strengthen these ministries. The opportunities range from taking Communion to those who are not able to be with us on Sunday to being the hostess for our social gathering at our coffee hour. Last year we had a series of training sessions for our various ministries, and we would provide training for any of you who are willing to help in one of the Sunday roles. I ask you to consider participation in worship ministries – as more people join in, the opportunities become easier for all who participate. Please speak with me, Mother Barb or Deacon Joy if you are willing and able to help. God bless and keep you all. In Christ, Judy George Herbert’s Pattern Poem, Easter Wings, 1663

Easter Hymn If in that Syrian garden, ages slain, You sleep, and know not you are dead in vain, Nor even in dreams behold how dark and bright Ascends in smoke and fire by day and night The hate you died to quench and could but fan, Sleep well and see no morning, son of man. But if, the grave rent and the stone rolled by, At the right hand of majesty on high You sit, and sitting so remember yet Your tears, your agony and bloody sweat, Your cross and passion and the life you gave, Bow hither out of heaven and see and save.
