The Old North State Land Rover Society By Dan Ratcliffe [We met Dan Ratcliffe at the 50th Anniversary celebration at Greek Peak, Cortland, New York, in 1998 when we stood in the woods marshalling the off road course together. With his daughter, he had piled into his Series Land Rover for the long trek north. A quick conversation with him confirmed his standing as an “enthusiast.” Here’s his look on his favorite Land Rover club -ed.]

“Good Folks & Good Times”

In the 1660s England established a royal colony called Carolina in the New World. The colony was named for King Charles I of England. The word Carolina is from the word Carolus, the Latin form of Charles. When Carolina was divided in the early 1700s, the southern part was called South Carolina and the northern or older settlement was called North Carolina, or the “Old North State.” This title, the Old North State, is one nickname often given to the state of North Carolina.A song by that title is also the official state song.

Land Rover 56 Years Later By Erica and Pamela Petroff [It’s 56 years after the first Series I appeared at the Amsterdam Motor Show. Paul, Pamela and Erica Petroff, Portland, OR, own a 1999 Discovery Series II (named PET RVR), a 1993 Range Rover LWB (the YAZ Mobile) and a 1969 Late Series IIA (named Lil Red). They updated a Rovers North News article for the All British Car Meet held this year -ed]

It would be hard to imagine an icon of transportation as universal as the Land Rover. This unique vehicle, conceived in 1947 as a stop-gap measure by a company desperate for export sales, became a rolling mirror in which Great Britain saw only its best qualities, rugged, substantial, useful, yet elegantly engineered. The Land Rover symbolized the nostalgic aspirations and harsh realities of post-war Great Britain. Farmers loved it for its utilitarian simplicity. Imperial administrators required its spaciousness in India and Africa. Sportsmen found it could tow horse trailers with ease. Oil company workers, scientists and big game hunters used them throughout the Empire. Suburban mothers could bus up to 12 children anywhere. Landed gentry, construction supervisors, and utility boards swamped the surprised officials at the Solihull factory with orders. The distinctive profile of the vehicle, a combination of square-shouldered ruggedness and airy lightness, conjures up instant images of African safaris, Sahara Desert crossings, and off-road expeditions. The same vehicle appears at Ascot, carrying sportsmen and their ladies, while towing their splendid horses. The royal Family cavorts around Balmoral in Land Rovers. The Pope uses one on Papal visits. Sociologists estimate that the first motorized vehicle seen by 20% of the people in the world was a Land Rover, and that for a sizeable percentage of children in the world; the Land Rover provides the common image of what constitutes an automobile. The impact of the Land Rover transcends all production figures. Initially, the Solihull factory rarely produced over 50,000 a year; it took nearly 30 years for Land Rover to produce their first million vehicles. Despite the small annual output, the great demand for these versatile vehicles meant they wound up being exported to 182 different world markets. Even continued on page 14

Women In The Woods

By Pamela Petfoff [As you’ve read elsewhere in this issue, Pamela Petroff, Portland, OR, is quite the enthusiast. She provided this account from the Left Coast on the growth of enthusiasm among women for off-roading ed.]

This year the Spring Women’s Run - the 4th annual - was held in Tillamook, OR, using a variety of trails, from part of Archers, to Boundary Road to Hood

Raiser to University Falls. Eight vehicles participated, a combination of Series trucks, Range Rovers and Discoveries. The drivers, a mix of new and returning participants, included: Nancy Kluss, Heather Tuip, Shirley Vander Veen, Debbie Wick, Deb Evans, Michal Anderson, Junko Chandler, Erica Petroff and me. Lisa and Will Stewart and Buzz Chandler helped with scouting and doing a pre-run. Here’s what these intrepid females had to say about driving off road: From Michal Anderson The Spring Women’s Run was a great success. Robison on Rovers How to choose the correct shop - correctly. © 2004 John Robison Many of you have read my posts on the Rovers North and DiscoWeb bulletin boards, and some have corresponded with me on various topics. For those who don’t know me – I manage J E Robison Service – on the web at www.robisonservice.com – an independent Land Rover specialist shop in Springfield, Massachusetts. I’ve worked continuously with Land Rovers since their re-introduction to North America some fifteen years ago. In my column, I can answer your questions at greater length than is possible on the bulletin boards. Each issue, I will take on a few of the interesting questions I receive or will address a topic of interest to Land Rover owners. I am a longtime Land Rover owner. I’ve had many Land Rovers over the years, and currently have a 2000 Range Rover P38A, a 1996 Discovery I, and a 1966 Series. My father has a 1995 Range Rover Classic, and my brother has a 2003 Discovery II. So we’re a Land Rover family. If you have questions or issues you’d like discussed email: [email protected] ________ P ________

Welcome to the fall edition of Robison on Rovers. In this column I’d like to talk about selection of a good shop for your Land Rover. At some point, all of you will need one. Many of you reading my columns here are do-it-yourselfers. I’m all for that! Fixing your own Land Rover teaches fortitude and self reliance. When your truck breaks down in the middle of nowhere there’s no substitute for being able to help yourself. Faced with a breakdown on a desolate mountain top some of us will rise to the challenge and motor home, while others will sit helplessly as night falls and the denizens of the woodland close in and carrion eating birds circle above. A person who can handle any repair on his Land Rover will have the confidence and basic skills to handle many other challenges life may throw at him. Such a person will remain unruffled when faced with clogged toilets, minor electrical fires, or leaky roofs. All of us encounter such things in life.

knows their way around these cars. Experience with Chevrolet or Mazda will not prepare someone to fix the ABS system or the air suspension on your Range Rover. Look for people who have training and certification. ASE is one organization that tests and certifies auto technicians. Land Rover also certifies dealer technicians. You can learn a lot by asking the shop manager about the shop’s policies. Can they take you in the shop and show you what’s wrong with your truck? Will they give you a tour of the place? Can they explain how the systems on your Rover work? Ideally, you will find people with a passion for Land Rovers. When you arrive at a new shop, have a look around. If you’re neat and clean look for a shop that’s neat and clean too. If you treat your Rover with respect bring it to a shop where the technicians treat things with similar respect. Do you mind your interior getting a little messy? Well, dirty footprints on the floor won’t matter now, will they? Are there other Land Rovers in the yard? It’s always comforting to be one of many. There’s nothing more disconcerting than being the only Range Rover in a service department parking lot full of Hyundais and Mitsubishis. Ask about parts – does the shop use genuine parts or aftermarket? Do they offer a choice? There is more than price to the selection of parts for your Land Rover. A good shop will have a parts philosophy that matches yours, and they will be able to advise you well. I’m not going to presume to tell you what parts YOU should use, because people have different priorities. You may want the least expensive brake job, while your friend may want maximum stopping power for the mountains. And I may want long pad life, and my father may want brake pads that don’t cover his wheel rims in dust. A good shop is one that can accommodate all those individual desires. What about price? Most shops bill out labor and parts individually. Labor charges may be based upon the actual time worked – as

new pads and rotors for $400. They’ve been taught to replace pads and rotors together. Another shop – more conscious of budget – measures the rotors and finds them re-usable. They quote $200 for pads only. Is the $400 quote a rip-off? No. It’s a higher price for a more comprehensive job. The more costly job will certainly stop more quietly and smoothly, and it will last longer. Do you want to pay $200 more for the better job? That’s up to you. When comparing prices make sure you are comparing comparable services. Repair is another matter. Repair prices often cannot be determined in advance. When someone comes in with a rough running Rover with a check engine light on the first thing they may say is “how much to fix my check engine light?” I say “the first step will be for us to test your car, to find out what’s wrong. Once we know what’s wrong we can figure out what the repairs will cost.” In some cases an iterative process is required to reach this point. For example, you may need to charge the battery to make a towed-in truck crank over. At that point you may need to replace the water pump so the vehicle can be driven. And only at that point do you discover that the head gaskets were blown from overheating and the truck needs a $1,500 repair in addition to the work already done. You can help yourself by giving a good description of your car’s problem. When does it run rough? You say:“Only on cold rainy days.” This simple statement could save you several wasted hours when you bring your car in on a hot dry summer afternoon. ________ P ________

Any shop with standard hand tools can do basic service – oil changes, brake pad replacement, muffler replacement, tune ups. If your Land Rover was made before 1993 you will find most anything can be done with a standard tools. However, if you own a late model Land Rover you will find special tools are needed for diagnosis and repair. Special Land Rover electronic testers are needed to fix the gadgets on newer trucks. ABS, SRS, EAS, ETC, climate control – these are some of the systems that can only be diagnosed with specialist equipment. Some of you may not even know what these systems are, but when they quit most of you will notice.

But until you arrive upon this plateau – master of Land Rovers, electricity and plumbing – you will need to engage the services of a repair shop to keep your trusty Land Rover running. I’d like to offer some suggestions to help accomplish this. The first thing I’d like to talk about is attitude. Many times I hear questions like “how can I get my car fixed without getting ripped off?” The implication is that repair shops are dishonest, and you need to protect yourself. In my experience, nothing is farther from the truth. Very few shops set out each morning to cheat their customers, despite people’s opinions to the contrary. Crooked repair shops and crooked mechanics are very rare. But well intentioned mechanics that lack the skills to do the job right – they are all too common. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen trucks come in with cross members left off “because they weren’t necessary”; check engine lights removed because “they just kept coming on”; paperclips in the fuse box because “the fuse just keeps blowing.” All those things and more result from a lack of skill or knowledge on the part of the person fixing the car. Many of these things are dangerous, all can be costly. How to avoid them? ________ P ________

Start by identifying shops in your vicinity that fix Land Rovers. How do you do this? Here are a few suggestions: Call Rovers North and ask if they know a good shop near you. They deal with shops all over the country. Ask your local Land Rover club. Look at the list of Land Rover shops online at www.bushducks.com. Look at the Cartalk site - www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/ Once you have found a shop (hopefully you will find several), the next step is a handshake. Meet the people who are going to be fixing your pet. Before you bring your Land Rover to a new shop I suggest you interview them for the job of fixing your Land Rover just as you’d interview someone for a job. Don’t be bashful – this is an important step! Why do they want to fix Land Rovers? What are their qualifications? How long have they done it? Do they have references? I have been servicing Land Rovers since they returned to America, and potential clients ask me these questions every week. I’d like to stress that the most important factor in having a good service experience is good communication with the repair shop. You need to feel confident that they care about your concerns, they understand them, they are smart, resourceful, and they can solve your problems. Well, at least your car problems. ________ P ________

Each make of car has its quirks and idiosyncrasies, Land Rover more than most. It is imperative that you find someone who

at our shop - or they may be derived from a labor estimating guide. The latter group of shops are called “flat rate” shops. Such shops may press their technicians to “beat the book time” to make more money and quality can suffer as a result. It pays to know how your shop bills time. Parts can vary in price from shop to shop depending upon the brand of part used. A Genuine Land Rover brake rotor may cost $68 from the dealer. An independent that has to pay more may charge $75.Another shop may use a lower quality aftermarket part for $50. Yet another shop may use a higher performance cross-drilled aftermarket rotor for $99. I’m not advocating one over the other – just know what you are getting. Shops do two kinds of work – maintenance and repair. Maintenance is the regular changing of oil, the replacement of tires, the replacement of wiper blades and the many other things found in the factory maintenance schedule. You should be able to get a price in advance for most routine maintenance jobs. Remember that the price may vary if differing grades of parts are used. For example, a fluid service with Mobil 1 or Amsoil will be more expensive than one with pertrolium base oil. When comparing prices for such services keep in mind the possible differences in labor, parts, and also the scope of work. What’s that? Here’s an example: One place may quote a brake job with

OBD II scan tools will not access the systems above. They are limited to accessing fault codes from the engine management system, and they are limited in that area when compared with specialist tools. There are three test systems on the market. Omnitec Interro makes the T4 systems used by Land Rover dealers. Two independent firms, Rovacom and Autologic, make aftermarket test systems with similar capabilities. Any full-service Land Rover specialist you interview should have one of these systems. The tools are no use to a technician without manuals with test info, repair procedures, and specifications. Printed workshop manuals are available for most Land Rovers. Land Rover has consolidated all the 1994-2003 manuals onto a CD kit they call RAVE. Last year Land Rover began delivering bulletins and other data via online subscription. The system they use is called Global Technical Reference – GTR. You can check out the service at www.landrovertechinfo.com I hope this column helps you the next time you need to seek service for your Land Rover. See you next issue. John

Land Rover North America announced U.S. pricing for its all-new SUV, the LR3. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the SE model will be $44,995, while the HSE model will retail for $49,995. All models will feature Land Rover’s innovative Terrain Response™ technology, a powerful 300 hp V8 engine and the Range Rover-inspired, fourcorner, cross-linked air suspension, solidifying LR3’s outstanding on and-off-road performance. “The all-new LR3 is the most technologically advanced, boldest, Land Rover ever launched in the history of the company,” said Richard Beattie, executive vice president, Land Rover North America. “This premium SUV, with its exceptional versatility and capability, is an excellent value considering the amount of feature, content and innovation Land Rover is bringing to the market.” Available in SE and HSE derivatives, LR3 offers the advantages of a powerful and responsive 300 hp 4.4-liter V8 engine, mated to a sixspeed electronic automatic transmission. This transmission is intelligent - adapting its shift patterns to driving style and road conditions - and equipped with Command Shift™, allowing the driver full control over gear changes. Special consideration has been given to ensure the powertrain meets Land Rover’s exacting standards for on-and off-road capability. LR3 sets an impressive benchmark for future Land Rover products with its new platform architecture and numerous technological advancements. The new, Land Rover-developed, Integrated Bodyframe™ architecture provides a stable foundation for refined onroad performance, while maintaining the off-road qualities essential to every Land Rover vehicle. Careful design and packaging has kept the overall height of the vehicle down, and has positioned the bulk of the vehicle’s mass as low as possible, further adding to the outstanding on-road dynamics. LR3’s all-new Terrain Response™ system is the latest development in four-wheel drive technology. By optimizing the vehicle’s sophisticated systems, Terrain Response™ allows the driver to choose from a variety of terrain settings, thus providing flexible and automatic control of the vehicle in all conditions, both on-and off-road. Not only does this help ensure that operation on a range of surfaces is safe and pleasurable, but it minimizes any environmental impact of off-pavement driving. The electronically-controlled air suspension system provides increased versatility and comfort. With automatic load-leveling and multiple modes (access, standard and off-road) the suspension allows for a softer spring setting in normal driving conditions, and versatility in others. The Range Rover-inspired cross-linking air springs allow for outstanding off-road performance by maximizing ground contact. The interior package is among the most versatile and accommodating in its class. The cabin of the LR3 is designed to allow maximum comfort for all passengers - even in the third row. When equipped, the third row of seats is capable of accommodating two 95th percentile adults. In addition, the alpine roof - driver’s sunroof and fixed glass over rows two and three - adds to the feeling of spaciousness throughout the interior. LR3 is available in eight standard colors: Chawton White, Bonatti Grey, Alveston Red, Java Black, Adriatic Blue, Zambezi Silver, Maya Gold and Tonga Green. All colors currently exist in the Land Rover color palate except for Tonga Green, which has been introduced for the 2005 LR3. All LR3 models come highly equipped with a list of desirable features and innovative technologies. In addition to the base level of content, the HSE adds a touch-screen, voice-activated navigation system, 600-watt audio system, 19”alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlamps and memory seats. Full details of trim specifications will be released closer to launch. Sales for LR3 will commence this fall. **prices noted include destination and delivery charges.

I knew this run was going to be something different. After getting instructions on safety and proper convoy rules we headed out. A quick highway run brought us to the trailhead, we were in the mountains. The light grade forest track brought us to the first hill climb of the day. I was shocked at how steep the trail was, but the trucks just drove up like it was no big deal. Unfortunately, our climb was cut short by a broken heater core. This filled the inside of the truck with hot coolant and fogged up the windshield so bad you couldn’t see out. Fortunately, we were able to bypass the core and scrounge up enough water to safely get up the hill. The rest of the morning was filled with trails and challenges that really surprised me. With Buzz’s hand signals to guide my wheels we tackled all the obstacles without so much as a scratch. Unfortunately our truck continued to build up pressure and blow out all its water. Martin, Heather and Buzz really helped out to make sure we had enough fluids and got off the mountain okay. Martin even gave up a gallon of windshield washer fluid to the cause. We skipped the afternoon trails and went on ahead to the winery to let the truck cool off. Soon the rest of the drivers showed up for some wine tasting and the best homemade truffles I’ve ever had. All the drivers got prizes from the vendors who supported this event. I really appreciate all the hard work Pamela and Buzz put into this event. Their hard work and the sponsor’s generosity made the day. We are the only women’s event of this kind in the United States and it was really great to be part of it. Thanks! From Shirley VanderVeen My daughter Debbie and I drove down from Seattle to participate in the Spring Women’s Run.This was my first Women’s Run and the first trip to the Tillamook Forest. I always enjoy driving my Discovery but to experience the forest roads and trails in the company of other women drivers and my daughter was a special treat. We had a very good selection of terrain to cover challenging - but not threatening. The two courses I found the most interesting were the very steep downhill and the rock pile. For both of these Pamela just counseled us to trust our trucks because they were designed to handle the abuse! When we met a caravan of Jeep’s on one of the forest roads (they pulled over and stopped for us) it was really fun to wave hello and watch their faces as Land Rovers after Range Rovers after ‘Lil Red [the author’s Land Rover - ed], all captained by women, passed by. My only question is,“When can I sign up for the Fall Women’s Run?” From Nancy Kluss Speaking from the perspective of a relative novice, I highly recommend women drivers taking the opportunity to participate in a Women’s Run. I have driven in three of them now and it is great fun, beautiful scenery, wonderful company, and a few challenges as well! This spring was no exception. I discovered that my confidence level goes way up when I have maneuvered over massive rocks and through deep muddy gullies, squeaked by trees with no scrapes to the paint, climbed up steep hills and back down again. One finds out quickly how well a Rover really can manage over all types of terrain! I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to explore some of the beautiful Pacific Northwest scenery that our journeys have taken us on. The views of mountain peaks and valleys have been breath taking from some of the vantage points we have gotten to. The women that have come on these runs come with a variety of experience in driving these rigs and the courses that Pam Petroff has setup have allowed us all to have a safe and fun time while having the opportunity to experience some exciting challenges as well. No matter what your level of expertise in driving a Land Rover is, women really can enjoy this great outdoor experience and the camaraderie is great! Heather Morris-Tuip After participating in my first Woman’s Run last fall, I could hardly wait for the Spring Woman’s Run. It’s not every day that I get to command the Rover and the husband doesn’t get to say a

thing. He continues to complain to this day that I drove too close the bushes on the passenger side, but fails to notice the correlation of these occurrences with his commentary on my driving skills. I was not expecting the type of trails we drove on (complete naive) and was not even sure that I had the skills to keep from denting up the Rover. I surprised myself on my skills as a driver as well as just what a stock Ranger Rover with an air dam could handle. My most favorite part of the trail was the forest bit where we had to maneuver between trees with just an inch or so to spare. Be off just a little bit on your measurements and the trees would be sporting shiny new black paint. But probably the most fun was the hill descent. I have a new healthy appreciation for my seat belt as I slid down the hill in low, first gear with my foot on the brakes [but gently, we hope - ed]. Without my seat belt I would have been plastered to the inside of my windshield - that’s how steep the hill was. It was fun because you knew that nothing could go wrong, but you still had those butterflies in your stomach.... just like a rollercoaster ride. I learned a lot from the trip, about my own skills, the Rover’s skills and just how much water (or any other fluids!?!) a blown heater core require. We went home and promptly bought a 5 gallon jerry-can after experiencing what happens when you don’t have a jerry-can and need large amounts of water. Ending the trip at a winery was perfect. It gave me a chance to sample the wines and let the husband drive home, but not before we all had some good laughs about the guys with their decked out Jeeps and Broncos who were totally amazed by the girls in their stock Land Rovers conquering “their” trails.

From Junko Chandler My requirements for camping are flush toilets, hot showers, and nice soft sheets, so there are some events where Buzz, my husband, must pretend he is a bachelor for the weekend. But we both have participated in just about every Women’s Run (always in the sweep truck position) helping everyone along. I am really surprised at what I can do with my driving ability as time has gone along. This Spring’s run really had some difficult places that I would never have gone if it were not for the group going there and Buzz talking me through it.There was one steep hill going down I was very scared, but Buzz said to just put it in low range 1st gear and take my foot off the brake and leave it off !!!! I thought he was crazy, we are going to die !!!!!! But, he was right. Our Disco just crept down the hill in full control. Just amazing! Always being in the sweep position has been interesting. This year we had one truck with radiator problems and we stopped frequently to help them keep going. I never thought I would see water from the rock quarry with little fish in it being poured into a Land Rover radiator !!!! But it worked !!! Also, I remember Martin, Heather’s husband, who helped also and he carried a huge plastic box filled with water up to the road from the pond and he was really wet. I thought my husband was the only Land Rover crazy person, but it seems I was wrong after seeing what everyone did to keep water in the truck with problems. That’s why I like going on the Women’s Run. Lots of help in case of trouble! Pamela Petroff There you have it! The drivers speak for themselves! The Spring Women’s Run was great fun – a good day in the woods!

“Good Folks & Good Times”, continued

agement of seasoned wheelers towards newbies. All are welcome and encouraged to participate, without undue pressure or competition (well maybe just a little amongst friends).

When the Old North State Land Rover Society was conceived, there was only one member. It was October of 1996, and he had just returned from a visit to the Mid-Atlantic Rally, hosted by the Rover Owners Association of Virginia each year. Talking with enthusiasts there he discovered that North Carolina did not have a Land Rover organization. It didn’t seem right not to have one so he conceived of “The Old North State Land Rover Society.” The name made sense. He also thought that it should not be called a club, but rather a society instead. Society seemed to suggest a group of individuals bound by a common respect, a group that would set the standard for civility, honesty, and fun. The term soci-

ety also suggests inclusiveness. In a club, it might seem too easy to isolate people by skill level, or by any number of things that are in the end divisive. The only limit placed on members is a love of Land Rovers. Originally, we tried to do without officers or rules other than courtesy and respect for each other and to the land we drive on. The person who put together the day’s event was in charge, and the hope was that that would be enough. The hope was a bit naive, but heartfelt. As it seems with all things, protection for those members doing the work of the society, rules for behavior, and all of the other trappings of a formal organization were eventually needed, but they surrounded the original intent without smothering it. Today we have bylaws, a code of ethics and a great Board of Directors to lead the society. Hopefully, we’ve not lost our original vision. As with many humble beginnings, the first trail ride consisted of myself, Sean Cantrell and his family. We met outside of the Hyphen Coffee Shop, Main Street, in Fuquay-Varina, NC. That trail ride, on the fourth Saturday of the month, became a tradition. We spent a great day exploring a series of trails outside of Fort Bragg (sadly, they’ve since been closed.). It was a great time! The next four trail rides weren’t so spectacular, as I found myself the only person there. I was just about to the point of calling it a failed experiment when on one Saturday I found five Land Rovers in the parking lot. From that point on, attendance on those trail rides would fluctuate from two Land Rovers to the largest one of 21 Land Rovers.

The early simple efforts taken to go just to Uwharrie National Forest have expanded to include events held at the coast, across the piedmont, and into the mountainous regions of North Carolina. Events for every type of skill level now grace the adventure calendar, giving opportunity for adventure to everyone. When Rovers North asked me to write an article, I thought, why not contact the membership and let them tell everyone what they think about being a member of the Old North State? Here is what they have to say. Dale Knepp wrote “the camaraderie and friendships intertwined with high morals and integrity is what the Society is all about. We have a family atmosphere where we use our Rovers as a venue to enjoy the outdoors with like-minded enthusiasts. Whether on organized trips/events or side trips, some life long friendships have been developed. Another tribute is the encour-

Charles Allen responded that “what I like (love) about the Old North State is the feeling I get of “belonging.” When we have an event or trail ride together everyone is welcome and made to feel that way, including wives, children and pets. The trail leaders are always looking out for everyone involved. If someone feels uncomfortable with part of a trail we all look for an alternative route. There is no pressure to do something you don’t want to do. We have a very mature (not old) group of drivers. Everyone is willing to help and offer advice at any time, from driving tips to mechanical help. I read on one offroad site that, “No one is out of gas, food, water, parts, etc. until all of us are out.” I feel that this sums the Old North State Land Rover Society perfectly.” Matt Wallace asked “when was the last time you took your Land Rover off road or took the family on a camping adventure? The Old North State provides a prime opportunity to break out of the mundane routine of going to work, mowing the yard, etc. and spend time with your family in the great outdoors. A perfect time to leave the cell phone behind, not that you would have coverage in a lot of the places the Old North State can take you anyway.” “North Carolina has many great features, from the coast to the mountains. The Old North State’s adventures take advantage of these unique opportunities and are organized around using your Land Rover to take you there in a safe and fun manner. Where else can you gain experience by both driving in sugar sand at sea level to enjoy spectacular sunsets and then carefully rover over rocks to experience the most breathtaking long range views at elevations exceeding 5,500 feet? Keep in mind though, sand and mud can find their way into tents! The adventures are well planned; yet loose enough to have individual fun, with a focus on completing the adventures with your Land Rover in one piece. This format is very reassuring and rewarding if your Land Rover is the daily driver.” “No matter what model of Land Rover you drive, the Old North State offers opportunities to learn about other models and other owners’ experiences. Society adventures often are pretty equally divided between Range Rover models, Discovery models, and Series models,

with a Defender thrown in at times. This offers a great chance to crawl underneath vehicles, ask knowledgeable owners questions, and evaluate accessory equipment. As a bonus, many of the Old North State members have multiple models, providing valuable comparison information. Society members are true Land Rover and life enthusiasts and are readily willing to help you share in the adventure.” Ryan McKean noted that “being a member of the Old North State Land Rover Society has benefited me in ways that I did not think possible. I first assumed it was just another four-wheel drive club similar to those when I owned a Jeep. This could not be further from the truth. I have grown and learned so much through the Old North State. It has allowed me to interact with a very diverse group of people. The background and personal history of the members is very fascinating and I enjoying learning about my comrades just as they do me. We combine these backgrounds into efforts that make this society one of the best I have ever experienced.” “We participate as a group to complete off-road trail repair, group camping at rallies, Christmas Parties, pub meets, tech sessions, organized trail rides throughout our state and even our country. There are planned annual trips to the mountains and the beach (my personal favorite).“ “In the Old North State safety is a very big concern and most of our senior members are always around to help ensure safe techniques. Whether it is driving, winching, or wrench turning you are always surrounded by competent comrades who enjoy building confidence in you. I have found a very special bond within the Old North State and through the years, as a member, I have seen just how strong our bond is.” I wrote parts of this article nearly four years ago and they still apply. Being a part of the Old North State has been at the core of some of my fondest memories. No one would believe it if I said that there were not some problems along the way, but they were minimal. Much more plentiful are the memories of campfires, driving, learning about these fine machines, learning about each other, and ourselves, and simply enjoying life. I have enjoyed my adventures with the society so much! They you have it. As Matt Wallace said,“The Old North State is just the place to live the experience, meet new friends, and share the adventurer’s passions. Good folks and good times.” If you live in or near, or are just driving through North Carolina, check out the web site a www.theoldnorthstate.org and maybe join us on the trail.

Technically the most advanced shock available today, Bilstein utilizes a one piece seamless monotube design filled with oil and nitrogen gas in a pressurized, sealed compartment. Completely eliminates any foaming of the oil and the monotube design helps dissipate heat to prevent shock fade. Bilstein’s shock bodies are precision-formed through a unique seamless manufacturing process. We recommend for use with Land Rover Genuine standard or heavy duty springs. ROVACOMLITE – A Professional Land Rover Diagnostic System At an Affordable Price! ROVACOMLITE is a revolutionary diagnostic tool that not only provides you the same capabilities found in other Land Rover diagnostics systems priced at over $10,000, but is flexible in that you purchase only the software modules you need (or can afford). Once you purchase the initial hardware, you can purchase any of the modules in the list as shown, and within 24 hours you will be forwarded the code to activate the module(s). These modules typically range in price from $130 - $280.

A portion of ROVACOMLITE’s order form illustrating the range of software modules available for vehicles.

Your laptop

More than just a scanner, the ROVACOMLITE gives you the ability to not only read and reset fault codes, but to cycle hardware devices outputs (lights, door locks, windows, etc.), read system settings, and change/calibrate where appropriate. To find out virtually anything about the vehicle or command any vehicle system to perform a task, you simply run the vehicle explorer software on your PC, and click on the relevant standard style text links. Just click and you can “Read current settings”, “Read fault code memory contents”, “Clear fault code memory contents”, “Wind the window up”, or any one of many hundreds of possibilities. The vehicle explorer software sends the request to the vehicle server, which in turn instructs the vehicle system to perform the task required and obtain any returning information to be viewed by the vehicle explorer. “I wanted to give you a ROVACOMLITE update...That machine rocks! Once you start to learn how to use it, it gives you what you need to know right away...It is so cool to be able to push a button to reset adaptive values and have an engine come back into line.”

Paul Shram BPL Engineering ROVACOMLITE includes an extensive built-in help system that includes indexes, pictures, tables and diagrams to clearly explain every feature and function of each vehicle system. Embedded links are also provided to sites on the Internet. These links, when clicked, will provide you access to a vast amount of further information, including not only places of interest and relevance to each vehicle system but also to services such as discussion groups and companies who repair, loan, test and supply new and used vehicle system components.

Vehicle Communications Interface

ROVACOM LITE Vehicle Server

Finally, as a ROVACOMLITE owner, you will have access to the ROVACOMLITE online forum where specific questions relating to your unit will be answered by the ROVACOM staff. You may also post vehiclespecific questions on this forum and obtain a response either from the staff or other users that have run into similar issues. The ROVACOMLITE performs diagnostics for all 1990-2003 Range Rovers, Defender, Discovery and Freelander. New vehicle model upgrades (as available) are easily downloadable to your system. Rover cars, Mini Cooper, and Morgan diagnostics are also now available with other vehicles soon to come. With this power and flexibility, the ROVACOMLITE Diagnostic System is the clear choice for a shop or the do-it-yourselfer. * Calculated load value * Current gearbox status In the ENGINE AND OTHER ECU LINKS section: * Coolant temperature * Battery voltage * Road speed * Air conditioning request * Front screen load * Ignition switch * ABS volts * Security learn and mobilized * Transfer box volts * Ignition timing advance It can be forced to drive a selection of outputs and also features an adaptive learning capability which can be retriggered to force it to relearn following engine work or operating environment changes. This is particularly useful as it can potentially make the engine run better and improve overall economy. There are also a large selection of settings, numbers and other specifications (e.g. VIN/CC). Many of these can be changed allowing ECU swapping. It is also possible to put the GEMS ECU into "learn mode" thus synchronizing the immobilize security loop. The GEMS software module has been fully developed and tested and is available for inclusion on the ROVACOMLITE system.

Land Rover 56 Years Later, continued the contemporary Land Rover product line, which features four types of vehicles – the more utilitarian Defender, the suburban Discovery, the luxurious Range Rover, and the versatile Freelander – runs at about 200,000 vehicles per year. The Land Rover grew out of the post-war realities of a devastated Great Britain. A depleted economy pointed to only one direction – export – for recovery. All basic goods in England, from foodstuffs to steel, remained under strict rationing. If you had designs on manufacturing products in Great Britain, you needed to focus on exports or you would not receive allotments of raw materials. The Rover Car Company enjoyed a sterling reputation for refined products for upper income professionals before WWII, but virtually all of its automobile sales were domestic. An “Export Department” did not even exist. If Rover wanted to start up production of home market sedans again, it would first have to design an export oriented vehicle so it could qualify for additional raw materials. The impetus for the Land Rover, as enshrined in legend, came in 1947 when Spencer Wilks asked his brother Maurice, Rover’s Chief Engineer, what he would buy when the Jeep, a wartime relic, on his estate in Anglesey eventually wore out. Maurice responded the only possible answer was another Jeep. To a prideful Englishman like Spencer, the only possible resolution was that Rover should build a lightweight, four wheel drive vehicle, keyed to agricultural use. The Rover Company jumped into the breech immediately, but it had such few resources that the vehicle had to be constructed inexpensively and rapidly. Two Jeeps were sourced from an Army dump to begin the design process. Since Rover had no existing frame that could adapted for this use, one was welded up from strips of flat metal into box-sections.The prototypes used a center steering wheel to avoid right-hand and left-hand drive market problems [although no examples have ever been found – ed].With limited funds to purchase body panel machinery, the design required panels that could be shaped by hand. The severe rationing of steel meant the body would be constructed from Birmabright aluminum alloy, expensive but easier to work by hand. The Wilks brothers and their small staff worked furiously to complete the first prototypes in time for testing and introduction at the 1948 Amsterdam Auto Show. A test report in England’s The Autocar of April, 1948, attempted to describe the Land Rover as “either a private car able to perform many valuable duties other than sheer transport, or as a general purpose countryside worker which is also capable of providing comfortable and efficient transport. Its appearance is starkly practical, nevertheless, it is not ugly and has a distinctly attractive appearance all its own, the operative word about the whole car is ‘substantial’.” If the world has to be strictly economical for years to come, is not this the sort of car that most of us need, one that is entirely practical and essentially useable? And practical it was.The production Land Rover came as a three-seat, open top vehicle with power take-offs front and rear. Through them you could operate machinery from saws to threshing machines. A capstan winch option added to its versatility. A Mobile Welder, Compressor and Fire Engine models were created, starting the tradition of custom Land Rovers that remains to the present day. A short-lived Station Wagon ran from 19481951 and revived again in 1954 to become a staple of the line. While Land Rovers came in two basic wheelbase lengths, they shared common engines and most drivetrain components. Different top configurations, whether hardtops, station wagon “safari tops” (with sun shields and air vents), removable canvas or pickup cab, could be placed on any body shell, giving owners maximum flexibility while reducing production costs. To the immense surprise of management, the demand for Land Rovers far exceeded supply. The company made a few changes increasing length and engine size, and then came out with a new model, the Series II in 1958. A few cosmetic and drivetrain changes marked the Series II-A models (1962-1971), with most changes coming as a result of new regulations in export markets. The Series III (1971-1984) upgraded the interior for the first time in over a decade, provided a safety dashboard,“deluxe” seating, a new transmission with synchromesh in all four gears, an easier clutch, and even a radio as an option. The inherent flexibility of the basic design also meant that a Special Projects unit of the company could produce custom versions, such as ambulances and crew cabs, for one-off needs of fleet buyers. Special versions of each Series would be constructed for military use, although a major Land Rover military presence did not arrive until 1956. The Military Lightweights, with their distinctive appearances, have become favorites of off-roaders and collectors worldwide. Whichever version you chose, the Land Rover proved remarkably rugged, well engineered and easy to repair with simple tools. The steel box-section frame could be patched by any competent welder. All critical suspension and axle pieces lay bathed in 90W oil. Whether gas or diesel, the 2.25 liter engine’s 8-quart oil capacity assured adequate lubrication in torturous conditions. The mammoth radiator kept temperatures down even in the deserts. The aluminum body panels didn’t rust, and since they were bolted to each other, proved strikingly easy to replace in the event of an accident, Drovers worldwide discovered they could abuse them without mercy and their Land Rovers would get them home. Ironically, despite selling every vehicle it could make, Land Rover found itself increasingly short of resources to compete in global markets. Japanese manufacturers had marketed their four-wheel drive counterparts, like the Toyota Land Cruiser, at substantially lowers purchase prices. Land Rover suffered from a lack of capital funds to develop new products, enhance current offerings, and strengthen dealer networks. With so few cars produced each year, there simply was not enough profit per car to provide capital reserves. There was, however, one major obstacle in the road to Land Rover’s worldwide success. The United States market bought

relatively few Land Rovers in any one year. From 1948-1974, when Land Rover pulled out of the United States market (they returned with the Range Rover in 1987), only about 13,000 Land Rovers found their way across the Atlantic. Most Americans used them for sport or people-hauling purposes, rather than as the utility-agricultural uses for which they were designed. That made the station wagon versions in the 88” wheelbase version the most popular, although a four-door, 109” version, was also available. In general, U.S. drivers found the Land Rover to be rather expensive as well as too boxy, too dull, too primitive, too slow, and gas-miserly when it didn’t matter. For two years in the mid-’60’s, Land Rover tried to address these concerns by dropping a 6-cylinder into the 109” Station Wagon, but the engine proved troublesome and unremarkable in an age of huge V-8’s. Although Land Rover made a pick-up truck version, the U.S. slapped a 25% tariff on every imported truck, so it sold poorly. Increasingly, Land Rover faced greater challenges in the U.S. market. The weaker dollar artificially strengthened the pound sending prices higher and higher. British politics played a role, too, as Land Rover found itself a crown jewel in the British Leyland conglomerate created to save the British auto industry. These circumstances further assured that corporate profits, badly needed to update existing models, would be siphoned off to help salvage dying Austin and Morris models. By 1974 Land Rover, looking ahead to more stringent American emissions controls and safety legislation, packed it in and sent Land Rovers to the rest of a more appreciative world. However, Land Rover never lost sight of what the U.S. market was doing with four-wheel drive vehicles. The success of the ‘60’s Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco provided Land Rover engineers the support they needed to convince management that a luxury four wheel drive vehicle, could become a commercial success. Oddly, General Motors gave Land Rover an unintentional boost when it sold the rights to its 215 cubic inch aluminum V-8 in 1963. That powerplant could produce nearly 200 hp when the standard Land Rover 4-cylinder offered 77 hp, all in a package of similar size and weight. It quickly became the engine of choice for the luxurious Range Rover when it was introduced in 1970, and later on the Land Rover 110” in 1979. Range Rovers were an instant sales success in England and other markets, offering comfort and roadworthiness while retaining traditional Land Rover off road capabilities. Range Rovers showed up in North America not long after their introduction in England (in 1970) as

kids and family anywhere and can park anywhere, while maintaining the thoughts of driving anywhere, even off-road. The Freelander’s appearance is similar to other smaller sized SUVs on the market, however, it is a Land Rover through and through. It adds to the marque’s arsenal a less expensive alternative, thus allowing the Range Rover to take a step up into the upper class of luxury vehicles. Recently redesigned, the new Range Rover truly inhabits the high end of luxury while continuing the capable heritage of its predecessors. A far cry from the utilitarian nature of the first Series trucks, this vehicle features such comforts as 12-way adjustable leather seats and a heated steering wheel. A BMWdesigned engine, independent front suspension and a unitary body also break with tradition. The off road and 4 wheel drive capabilities are no less formidable though, being the end result of 50+ years of engineering expertise. A brand new Land Rover, featured at the All British Car Meet and in the previous issue of the Rovers North News, is the startling new LR3. This Land rover boasts some of the most cutting-edge on-road technology of any Land Rover, such as headlights that adjust to “see around corners” [remember the Citroen DS-19? – ed], as well as off-roading essentials, like locking differentials and satellite navigation. It also fulfils one of the Land Rover’s premier uses, if not the original intention: it is a people mover. It can easily seat seven adults, in three rows of seating. The LR3 comes with a Terrain Response System that allows the driver to select the kind of terrain the LR3 is about to encounter and LR3 responds immediately by adjusting electronic systems such as Traction Control, ABS, Hill Descent Control and High and Low Range to adapt to the situation. These features are complimented by the 300 hp V8 under a bonnet, reminiscent of the Range Rover, with an equally striking body style to match. The impressive LR3 is the ultimate combination of all that Land Rover has come to represent in a vehicle, and the technology of today. Land Rover enthusiasts, as well as down-to-earth consumers, should both see this vehicle as a revolution in engineering and practicality. Looking even beyond the LR3, Land Rover has shown us a glimpse of what we may expect to see in the future. The Range Stormer, a Land Rover concept design which looks like a Range Rover gone sports car, is set to be the fastest Land Rover so far. With a glass roof, scissor doors, 22” wheels and an electronic tailgate, its style is unique and bold. Like the LR3, it shows that Land Rover is not just a company that makes trucks and farm equipment these days, but has come a long way to make vehicles that can still sustain their original purpose, while fitting in with the pods of today’s urban and suburban vehicles. For a Land Rover owner there is pleasure in knowing that you are driving a vehicle dreamed Special build, up nearly 50 years ago that is still one-off functional today, designed with just G4 Edition the right combination of style, power, size, capacity, ruggedness, reliability, and longevity. It has grown and evolved with the passage of time and has along the way incorporated all of the latest in engineering and technology. It functions well as a road car. It fits comfortably into cityscape or back country escape. It will carry far more than expected without complaint. It will cruise at interstate speeds all day but is perfectly content to chug along at trail speeds of 15-25 mph, the right speed for viewing the scenery around you. Perhaps that is the real joy of Land Rover touring. You are easily in touch with your surroundings, be it mountains or a mall. Off road, it will go through anything you can get it into, and whether you get it out is usually more dependent on your skills than the Land Rover’s limitations. You can tilt one over 30 degrees without tipping over. Steep entry and departure angles give it extraordinary climbing abilities without getting hung up front or rear. It can wade through water well over wheel height. A clever suspension design assures excellent individual wheel articulation, meaning that each wheel can power itself out of a tricky gully or over a rocky step. It is narrow enough to wend its way though forest glades, rugged enough to pound over washboard dirt roads all day. Generally, you tire out long before your Land Rover. Automobile buyers in this decade have vastly different expectations than their peers did over 50 years ago. In response, Land Rover design and production has grown and evolved to provide choices of vehicles that fit with the times and needs of a changing world. Bruce McWilliams, who headed Land Rover’s North American operations in the 1960’s once commented in an interview (Land Rover Owner International, February, 1995): The people who ran Land Rover were gentlemen. What you had [in them] was in ways the residue and remainder of an age when English gentlemen created and purchased significant automobiles – They were honorable and decent, and quite brilliant engineers, and the fruits of their labour show it. Our definitions of what we expect in a vehicle have changed, but in a world of marketing hype, form over substance and bean-counter mentality manufacturing, Land Rover continues to produce “The World’s Most Versatile Car.”

grey market imports with formal importation to North America beginning in 1987. While always a comfortable quiet vehicle, the Range Rover has moved aggressively up-market since its introduction. Engine and drivetrain enhancements have made it even smoother and more powerful, particularly with the introduction of the newer 4.0 and 4.6 models. Whatever version, the Range Rover has proven a durable, reliable vehicle in the Land Rover tradition. High mileage engines, exceeding 250,000 on the odometer, are not uncommon. Used North American-spec Range Rovers have become popular “entry-level” Land Rovers for new enthusiasts. Land Rover strengthened its presence in North America in the early 1990s with the importation of the Land Rover Defender 90, the logical successor of the Series I-III models, and a brief run of a version of the formidable Defender 110, a four-door model complete with roof rack and “safari cage.” Any honest Land Rover enthusiast would admit: they would sell their soul to own one. Imports of the Defender model to the United States ceased after 1997 due, in large part, to the inability to meet future U.S. safety standards, particularly those related to the cockpit. The growth in popularity of the SUV helped the Discovery, created in 1989 and introduced in the USA in 1994, find a niche with suburban drivers, who have families, groceries and pets to transport from here to there. These Land Rover owners head to the mountains to ski, or to the beach to relax, and might off-road for pleasure but seldom as a part of everyday life or job. True to its heritage, Land Rover still incorporates aluminum body panels and exemplary four wheel drive technology into its current line – which sells in quantities in the U.S. alone that would have rivaled the world-wide Series sales! Since the release of the Discovery, Land Rover has put out another strong sport utility aimed at the growth of the babyute SUV. The Land Rover Freelander, a smaller Land Rover, has come into the market as a safe yet trendy car that can carry the

Installing a Genuine Dash Repair Kit in your Discovery I Most Discovery Series I’s are prone to having the front most section of the dashboard - closest to the windscreen - peel up around the defroster vents. This makes an otherwise handsome interior look bad – fast. This “peeling” is due to long term exposure of UV rays, heat and quite simply, an adhesive material used in manufacturing that wears out. Let’s get on with the good stuff. You can now fix your peeled up dashboard with one of our Dash Repair Kits (RNH253) for the Discovery I. It consists of two formed dashboard plastic cover/anchors and all neccessary hardware.

Tools required for this job; - Utility knife - #2 phillips screw driver - Right angled drill with phillips bit or 1/4” ratchet handle with #2 phillips bit - Pencil - Dremel Moto Tool or similar (or utility knife) - Flat or round file - A little bit of patience and... - A good Land Rover project helper friend

1 Typically this is what your Discovery I dashboard will look like. The only solution (other than a new dashboard) is to fit this Genuine Kit.

3

2 Start by removing the binnicle. There are several phillips head screws that attach it to the dashboard. Unplug all the wiring harnesses and note their location.

4

5

Carefully drill in some of the supplied self tapping screws to secure down any high portion of the dash. Make sure to locate these in an area other than the pre-drilled locations on the dash cover kit. Use your friend to help.

Attack the second and third screws in the same fashion. Be carefull to NOT crack the glass of the windscreen. Fit the remaining screws and take your time lining it up BEFORE securing it. Use your friend!

8

After you have finished installing the remaining screws, test fit the binnicle and using the pencil, mark the corners (and or areas where it contacts the cover) where trimming will be required.

Connect the wiring harness back in, and refit the binnacle to the dashboard.

6

Start with the passenger side of the dash and using the supplied self tapping screws, insert into the pre-drilled holes and drill with the 90˚ angle tool into the dash to fasten the cover.

7

9

Take that utility knife out and carefully carve away any “super high” section. Be extra cautious to not cut away too much and or yourself. Test fit the dash edge cover piece before and while you are doing this so that you know how much (or little) to remove. This will help in the mounting of the dash edge cover later.

Time for the Moto Tool. Carefully sculpt the areas away on the binnacle that come into contact with the dash cover kit. Finish up the edges with a flat or round file.

10 Completed Genuine Discovery I Dashboard Kit fitted.

Behind The Steering Wheel

By Jeffrey Aronson

I found an old New Yorker magazine from summer 2003 in the house. The cover artwork captured the essence of driving for every Land Rover enthusiast. Before you is the sweep of a windshield constraining your view. The shape is closer to a 50’s Rover sedan than a Series Land Rover, but even if it had been the more expansive view of the Range Rover, Discovery or Freelander, you would recognize that your visual universe is shaped by the dimensions of your windshield. Alongside a country road lies a row of deciduous trees in full summer green. There’s a slight blur where the glass distorts the view near the bottom of the windshield. A man’s hand - you know this by the heft and bit of suit jacket sleeve with white shirt cuff showing - grips a large wheel with the right finger indentations for grip. The wheel has a large spoke and portion of a central hub visible. They’re black bakelite in appearance; there’s no hint of leather covering for grip or status. From the tensed muscles in the man’s hand, it’s clear that power steering was not ordered on this car. A large, long gearshift lever sits off to his right, easily within reach. Only the slightest lip of safety padding, matching the paint in the interior, protects the occupant. Two instrument needles hint at unspecified conditions, but one needle is at the 3/8 position, so all must be well. I’ve stared at this drawing by P. Kenton Nelson for a while thinking of my 1,000 miles of recent driving. A new posting takes me every week to the Maine - New Brunswick, Canada town of Calais. The trip there begins with a 90 minute ferry ride from my island town home, another 90 minutes of two-lane, somewhat trafficked roads, and then nearly 100 miles of the road called The Airline. Maine State Route 9 starts in China, Maine, along China Lake and then runs northeast towards Bangor. It’s a terrific, two lane road that passes farms, a few businesses, some schools, and reflections of daily life as it winds its way up and around the hills of central Maine. Then, at Bangor, it becomes a wider, more twisted road through far more remote towns. Much of the land it crosses is unincorporated “townships” of bog, paper company land and stunning lakes. The road heads east-west from Bangor to Calais and Canada. There are four places along the route to get fuel or food, and they’re not open very late. I’ve seen only one repair shop along the entire route. One guy keeps busy by operating the only tow truck on the road. The Airline is a popular if dangerous truck traffic route because it saves nearly 50 miles of driving from a competing coastal route. Maine’s country and western notable, Dick Curless, had a hit with the lines “there’s a stretch of road, up north in Maine, that never, ever, ever wears a smile.” Over the years, it’s been slowly evened out and widened with the addition of truck passing lanes. Still, winter weather, fatigue and driving difficulties still make it a difficult road. Last year, a flatbed logging truck shifted its logs on a turn; when they fell off the truck, they landed on a car in the opposite lane, killing the occupants. Any dangers, toils and fears fall by the wayside when the sun rises or sets over the steep hills and lakes. The reflection of the awakening day or the fading light as you drive remind you why enthusiasts drive. As the Cunard Line used to say before the QM,“getting there is half the fun.” If that’ so, then few people had the fun enjoyed by Jacques Jenny, Sheridan,WY, this summer. Over the past two years, Jacques, a recent high school graduate, rebuilt a Series II with the help of his father, Peter. The acorn does not fall far from the tree, as we say in New England. Pete Jenny is an avid Land Rover and general aviation enthusiast; he treats his Land Rovers as well as his treats his classic planes. After two years in an airplane hangar, the Series II was relaunched. His Series II joins a refurbished 109” in the family stable. Jacques’ Land Rover had a serviceable frame so only a lot of elbow grease was necessary to ready it for daily use. New swivel balls helped with

the road control. The transmission was in poor condition, so he purchased a Series II-A transmission. That’s when he discovered that the dreaded Previous Owner had changed out the bell housing to accommodate the Series III transmission on the car. Pulling it once more, Jacques also decided to purchase a new, MoD- reconditioned engine through Rovers North. A Weber carburettor completed the engine setup. Pete Jenny decided to practice his spray skills by painting the car himself. He used an aircraft aluminum primer and marine paint on the car, which is a bronze green. To keep the car authentic, he left the mild off-roading dents in the body. What would you do after spending two years rebuilding a car? Why, you’d enroll in Vermont’s Middlebury College just so you could drive your car 2,250 miles over “three very long days”...without overdrive...following your family in their modern SUV...from Wyoming to the coast of Maine.Your brother, Barclay, would join you only for part of the final day. Your mother, Barbara, and your father, would encourage you from the seat of their far-more-modern vehicle. Jacques had the wisdom to carry a wellequipped toolbox, complete with a Rovers North sticker. Naturally, the car ran flawlessly on the trip although the speedometer began to fail by the east coast. By the time you read this issue of the news, Jacques and his car will be in Vermont. My 300-mile weekly trips faded into meaninglessness after meeting Jacques. 2,250 miles across much of the country - in a Series II - on highways. Now that’s driving! So’s this, thanks to Rover Enthusiast Robert Slater, Oshkosh,WI. He sent us an August, 1961 issue of Popular Mechanics. It’s complete with

through the United States and picked up the Pan American Highway. This road gained acclaim as it purported to be the only “all weather” road. In Costa Rica, the highway petered out to a set of mountain tracks and trails for over 100 miles, a sort of mini-Darien. Highway engineers had worked unsuccessfully for 18 years to construct a road. The crew faced countless trails and 23 landslides. Building one raft and walking the cargo of 4,800 pounds across the alligator infested river took up three days.Thirteen days later, they resumed their road eastward past the Panama Canal until the town of Chepo. Then they faced a 310 mile trek through rain forest, bog, and lowland field until Quibada, Columbia. The trip was exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. Some days they were lucky to progress 2 miles. During their trek, a team of anthropologists and geologists joined them in a Jeep CJ pickup, which failed often. The Land Rover, much battered, even survived a winch cable failure, a resulting tumble down a 65 foot hill and a rollover. As Bevir wrote,“even more amazing, when [Terry] stepped on the starter, the vehicle’s engine roared up as well as ever. Terry wryly remarked,‘You know, Dick, that was the fastest 70 feet we made during the entire trip.” The trip took 134 days; it included 310 miles of road, 125 hand-built log bridges, and the fording of 180 rivers and creeks. The Land Rover had smashed windows, a stripped differential and many body dents, but it drove proudly into Bogota, Columbia. Now that’s driving!

Now I’m a guy who used to blow the fuses in my family’s house by wiring up my Lionel electric trains myself. I adhere to a theory of automotive electronics that believes that electricity is actually smoke that travel through hollow wire. When the wire cracks or breaks, smoke escapes and the component or the whole car stops running. Lanny Clark, the estimable Land Rover restorer who worked for many years at Rovers North, once consoled me that “the only Land Rover you can’t rebuild is one that’s stolen or burned up.” I thought of an incident a few years back when the voltage regulator on my ‘66 Series II-A erupted in flame upon startup at a gas station one evening. It was, to say the least, unnerving. A gentlemen in a Ford Crown Vic offered me his coat, made from a petroleum-based product, which threatened to ignite itself, but I beat it vigorously enough that it put out the fire. The problem, of course, was not the voltage regulator itself but the wiring running to and from it. After 30 + years, the faded color insulation and brittle metal composition signaled the end of that wiring harness. While at it, I decided to accept the admonition to change from a positive ground, generator-voltage regulator system to a negative ground system with an alternator. After all, have you tried to find a positive ground radio these days? The one I purchased in 1968 for my Morris Minor was long gone, and unless you knew someone with an old junker Ford, you weren’t going to find an American one. And no, I do not have the capacity to understand the requirements for insulating a positive ground radio in a negative ground system. I thought of the incident again when a dead short in the alternator of my ‘80 TR-7 conspired with a frayed hot power wire from the starter to the alternator to burn out the engine wiring harness one morning. The plumes of smoke from the hood, during a torrential downpour, I might add, were very impressive. The incident prompted a frightened neighbor remarked nervously, “just how long have you owned this car?” Since I had hidden the1/2” spanner in the tool bag, the electrical short had plenty of time to melt and fray wiring as I searched for the correct wrench [memo to self - either install

cigarette ads, articles on “how to add sound to your 8-mm movies [Zowie!!], and how to make trellises from coat hangars.” More germane to the Land Rover enthusiast is a wonderful story on Richard Bevir’s trans-Darien expedition that began in October, 1959. Unlike the Geof Miller Darien Gap Expedition in the earliest Range Rovers, this one used a Series II 88” Hardtop. It was equipped with an 8,000 lb. PTO driven winch, some jerry cans and a roll bar mounted inside the cabin. The 12.5 gallon fuel tank and 15 gallons in the cans, which provided a range of 450 miles on the open road, were good for about 60 miles in the jungle. The Rover earned the name La Cucaracha Carinosa - The Lovable Cockroach. On October 16, Bevir and Terry Whitefield left Toronto, proceeded down highways

A decade ago, Land Rover enthusiasts used to flock to Maine for an event called the Downeast Land Rover Rally. Convoying back from a fun weekend, I joined a line up of Land Rover on the side of Rte. 1. Walking up to a stricken Rover, I noted the hood up and smoke rising from the engine compartment. The upset owner bemoaned his fate to the assemblage,“I can’t understand how this happened. I rewired it myself.”As a Series Land Rover, repairs necessary to get home by running power to the starter and ignition only were not that difficult. One Haynes manual and a lot of head scratching later with a few sparks - the Rover was on its way home.

a battery switch or a quick release connector to the battery cable. As a Leyland product, the TR-7 resembled the wiring of an early Range Rover - simple, similarly color coded, and direct.Within a few hours, Mike Smith at East Coast Rover had constructed a new wiring harness and attached it to the correct leads from the bulkhead. Hint from behind the steering wheel; if you want to stay behind the steering wheel, then consider replacing the wiring harnesses in your Land Rover. Oftentimes, the wiring behind the dashboard does not receive the heat and corrosive as in the engine compartment. You may well find that, as in the Series Rovers, you can replace considerable parts of the wiring harness by plugging in new components. It will take time to complete the project, but where safety is involved, aren’t you worth it?

Range Rover P38-A: The Next RR Classic? continued from page 1

entity “Range Rover North America.” Secretly, you’re in a quandary. In the home market, the success of the Vogue models had demonstrated the lure of a luxury-oriented Range Rover remember, the 1970 models were two-door utility vehicles with shag carpeting around the passender and a rubber mat around the cargo. A combination of limited production, appealing design and engineering and price assured the exclusivity of this model. With this, the future for the Range Rover brand was set. With the lowerpriced Discovery under development, the intention was to push the original (and best) increasingly upmarket, ensuring that the Range Rover would represent the absolute pinnacle of four-wheeldrive vehicles. In the long term, planners knew that the 1970 original as smart as it was - would need significant development in order to keep pace the development of rival cars.Work began on the project in 1988, with engineering and styling work being focused upon - but at this point in time, no deadline for launch was set. It was not until 1990, and with a budget of 300 million, that the project to replace the Range Rover was formally started under the codename of P38A.The launch date of late 1994 was set at this time.Technically, meeting the demands of the 1990s would be no mean task, but given the excellence of the original, a firm foundation was already in place. Also, because the relationship between old and new, it would be entirely possible to introduce features bound for the new car into the existing one. It was a ploy that had worked well in the past for Jaguar and RollsRoyce, so in this respect, the Range Rover was in good company. Of more of concern, however, was the new car’s styling. Rather like the difficulties encountered by Porsche when it came to replacing the 911, Land Rover knew that a major part of the Range Rover’s appeal was its styling - and it would absolutely need to be right. Therefore, a great deal of care and attention would need to be employed in the development of the P38A’s look... it would need to look substantially more modern, yet be readily

identifiable as a Range Rover. George Thomson, Land Rover’s styling director was handed the project in 1988, and admitted later that he found the brief both challenging and intimidating. “Recreating a classic like the Range Rover is a great challenge - but not an easy one.” Design competition at Solihull pitted rival studies against each other: Ital Design, Bertone, and Land Rover stylists themselves. Only Land Rover’s and Bertone’s designs were considered worthy enough to be translated into full-size clay. Thomson needed to balance stylistic demands with marketing demands. To be profitable, the Range Rover required a lot of hand labor. This raised the price, and luxury buyers have different tastes than estate owners. The design would have to thrill existing customers while luring new customers out of luxury car brands and into the new Range Rover. The range of designs was striking in its breadth and creativity. Design clinics involved customers in the final decision. Styling efforts that pulled the Range Rover too far from its distinctive elements did not fare well; a website on the P38A quoted a French customers claiming “this car has lost its Wellington boots.” Customers tend to be far more cautious and conservative than the designers of their favorite cars; it takes time for people to adjust to the changes. In the end, the Land Rover in-house design won out and the familiar P38-A came into production. The “P” stands for the code name Pegasus and the design incorporated many familiar elements: the low waistline, strong flanks, the “floating” roof, the “castle” ridges on the front corners of the hood, the dark surrounds around the windows. It also came with the all-too-trendy rectangular headlamps of that era. For all the styling cues, it still, however, it still lacked enough of the distinctive profile to permit instant identification. Land Rover was forced to put its name in bold lettering across the front of the car. By the time it came out in September, 1994, all

too many other cars shared similar shapes. In terms of body and chassis engineering, the P38A (an amalgamation of “Pegasus” and “38A”) retained much of the original’s underpinnings. The ingredients were familiar: a ladder-frame chassis (stiffened by 18 per cent) with the body compliantly mounted in the interests of NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) reduction. Crashworthiness was also improved, with front and offset impact resistance improved with further chassis reinforcement

Real Enthusiasts Don’t Fret Gas By Jeffrey Aronson

In Caracas, Venezuela, Miguel Veragara drove his unidentified Land Rover to a gas station, filled up the 20 gallon tank, and gave the attendant $2.00. He received change. The Boston Globe reported that he felt “it seems to me that gasoline is expensive. This nation is a petroleum producer.” Venezuela, which produces about 15% of the crude oil used in the United States, sets a rate of about 9 cents a gallon for gasoline. In Los Angeles, where gasoline exceeds $3.00 per gallon, one wag listed prices for his three grades of gas as “arm, leg, arm and leg.” For years I’ve shed crocodile tears each time I’ve fueled up the ‘66 Series II-A. By the time the fuel gauge has dropped to E, I can usually squeeze 10-11 gallons into the tank. Until this Spring, that’s meant that as long as I had a $20 bill, I could still get change back - although not as much as Senor Veragara in Caracas.. Of course, that meant stopping for fuel every 200 miles or so, but then, who could go more than 200 miles in a II-A without taking a break anyway? Friends with Discoverys or Range Rovers could, and did, enjoy longer absences from gas stations, but then, each time they arrived, they required a major transference of funds more akin to James Bond at Monte Carlo than me at a Cumberland Farms or 7-11. Hauling around some considerable heft, those V-8’s also needed premium fuel, too. This spring, though, everything changed.

The solo $20 bill no longer would fill the coffers; my last fill up required - gasp! - $23.00. I was in apoplectic shock. We keep being told that, adjusted for inflation, gas prices now are still less than those of 1981, but then, many Land Rover enthusiasts weren’t even born in 1981. Of course, by European standards, our fuel prices seem like bargains. The British have reconciled themselves to petrol prices that average around $6.00 per U.S. gallon, 2-3 times what we’ve paid this spring in the US. The French and Germans “save” around $1.00 over the Brits. Since Americans are already whining at prices from $2.00-$3.00 per gallon, imagine the hue and cry if our prices reached European levels? Throughout most of its history Land Rover had built only genuine four wheel drive vehicles. Except for a handful of military vehicles, all Land Rovers featured the frame, drivetrains, and engines necessary for long-lived utility vehicles. Right up through the early 1980’s, you could still hose out the rear compartment of a Range Rover. When it became clear to designers that the Range Rovers and Defenders were really people, rather than cargo, carriers, the interiors changed and became more comfortable, but the vehicle still demanded the same exterior, drivetrain and chassis features. These imperatives would challenge engineers to produce cars that had the requisite heft while still producing reasonable gas mileage. Even the recently-designed NAS spec Freelander, solely produced to carry people and their gear, has the same requirements and disap-

- the fuel tank was also re-located to beneath the rear seat, and side impact bars were added to all the doors... all in the interests of improved safety. Two versions of the Rover V8 were introduced, in 4.0 and 4.6-litre forms. The 4-liter version developed 190bhp and 236lb/ft torque, whilst the 4.6 developed 225bhp and 277lb/ft torque. Dashboard and interior were a huge leap over and above the original car’s.The dashboard design, in particular, was pleasing - with it’s swoopy centre console and car-like instrument binnacle. As befitting an entirely new car, the interior was completely overhauled as well - finally putting to rest the 1970 vintage dashboard architecture. The aim of the P38A programme was to improve interior quality, and bring it up to Germanic standards, as befitting the car’s upmarket role. The heating controls were simplified, and the adjustable ride-height controls were now totally intuitive. Certainly, these goals were largely met, although designed-in quality still had a little way to go - put that down to the non-too-generous development budget. The British magazine Autocar magazine faintly complimented then-new Range Rover. Comparing it with three rivals, they concluded:“It is the Range Rover that is unquestionably the car of the group, and so it should be considering its price. But even taking cost into consideration, its blend of effortless on-road performance and unimpeachable off-road authority means it cannot lose here. Although not a generation ahead of its time like its predecessor, but merely a thorough evolution of a familiar theme, there is no other in its class to touch it.” To Land Rover fans, BMW’s Wolfgang Reitzle will forever remain a controversial figure. but one thing he did understand was the value of the Range Rover - being as it was, the best in the world at what he did. And rather like Autocar, he came to the conclusion that because of the way it was designed, it was not advanced enough to live a long life. One of his first decisions that affected Land Rover, was to abandon the Discovery replacement in favor of building a new Range Rover - which would owe nothing to the P38A. A quick glance at the exterior or interior of the cur-

rent Range Rover demonstrates this reality. If you have the nerve, the P38A is simply majestic off road. In its primary use on the road, it has all the features you loved in a Range Rover Classic but adds more room, greater luxury and better handling. Its plethora of electronic luxury features did not come without headaches; some owners complained that after the initial purchase price, they really shouldn’t have to deal with repairing electrical systems controlling vital functions. By now, a 910 year old Range Rover P38A might start as low as $7,000 $9,000. If it’s been maintained, then the annoying systems glitches have been worked out. Parts for this model are readily available through Rovers North. For used Chevy or Kia dollars, you can have a Land Rover you can use daily, on or off road, in any weather condition. We know it’s a “tweener” model in the evolution of the Range Rover, but with the current “gills” model appealing to many customers, more and more P38A’s are on dealer lots as trade-ins. This may be an excellent time to enter the Range Rover world.

points car testers with so-so gas mileage. Off road, of course, all fuel economy measurements go by the board. The slow travel, waiting time, and stretches of constant idling or “put the wellie to it” acceleration. An off road event of several hours can burn through a tidy portion of the fuel in your gas tank - unless, of course, you’ve converted your Land Rover to a Tdi. Diesel owners can idle for hours with negligible fuel use. Still, unless you’re using your Land Rover in farming, logging or expedition work, most of your time is spent on actual roads. In Great Britain and Europe, where nearly half the cars sold are diesels. the 1.8 Rover diesels or the Land Rover Tdi’s proved to be the answer. U.S. emissions standards, driven by the California standards, preclude Land Rover from making the Tdi optional. How good is that option? Here’s a contemporary example. A Mercedes E320 CDI, with its 201 hp diesel engine, traveled about 600 miles on 18 gallons of diesel fuel. At $1.70 per gallon, that’s about 34 mpg and $31.00 of fuel. If the same car had a gas engine, it would have needed about 24 gallons and $52.00 of fuel. Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and California all adhere to the more stringent California diesel standards; in terms of car sales, California is the 800-pound gorilla in this mix. Most of us can’t instantly increase our incomes to make up for the spike in fuel prices, so how do we justify the added expenses? If you’re reading this newspaper, you’re an enthusiast and you should remind yourself that’s exactly why you’ve chosen to spend time behind the wheel of a Land Rover.

There’s a Range Rover P38-A running around the coast of Maine, complete with a “RNGE RVR” vanity plate. I see it routinely when I leave my island town. Once, I met the owner and told him I owned a Series II-A. The young man was oblivious about what this meant, but oh, was he thrilled with his Range Rover. He should be, too, as his white Rover was shiny, clean and straight. We had met at an Auto Zone where he had wiped out the store of car cleaning products, and most of it had been lathered onto the car. Did he love his car? Absolutely? Had he become an enthusiast? Absolutely. Was he going to find a way to shift around expenses to afford his Range Rover’s running costs? Absolutely. Whether you use your Land Rover for daily or occasional driving, remind yourself that you’re riding in a vehicle designed by engineers with a unique mandate to produce the finest four wheel drive vehicle in the world. The ergonomics of the interior, the styling of the exterior, the melding of drivetrain and frame, the extraordinary range of the suspension, the brilliant design of the monocoque construction on the Range Rover, the balance of the car, the superb driving capabilities across all terrain, these are the reasons you purchased your Land Rover and have kept it. Then when you go to fill up the fuel tank, knowing you’ve given up something to pay the extra cost, you’ll be pleased with your decision to reward yourself with your Land Rover. Who knows - maybe one day Land Rover will be able to import its diesel to the U.S. That will increase the excitement for enthusiasts.

Sightings After a June and July of fog and stereotypical British weather, August has brought a genuine summer. Drier weather has meant that Land Rovers could return to the woods and fields without a guilty conscience. Those logs piled up in mud can now be cut, split, dumped into the Land Rover and taken the woodpile at home. Fortunately, after reviewing all the entries, the editor could send all of them to Jac’Kiye McCollett, Monmouth, ME, who has a ball compiling and reflecting upon your entries. Once again she discovered dozens of Sightings that warrant emptying more of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it’s helpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings - it can be just as useful for the grizzled Sighting veterans as well. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in an distinctive way.

patrolling the perimeter of a wildlife preserve in a nicely outfitted Defender. Television commercials can be incredibly helpful when it comes to deciding what sort of cleaning products we use in our everyday lives; of course, they can also be incredibly annoying. Matthew Gross, Stewartstown, PA, reminds us that the Slime Tire Sealer ad with the Series 88” is back on the air. Could it be the only thing good about this product is having it set in scene where it depicts a couple driving a LR Series 88” SWB ll looking for injured tires? *Debra Scialla, Rindge, NH, spots a woman in a commercial for “The Glass Wizard” cleaning the glass on

Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can’t award you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won’t mention it again. If you’re new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can’t recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst... E-mail submissions - remember we can’t send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let me know if you think you’ve been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final. Land Rovers are everywhere and ubiquitous. We’ve run this before but it’s worth noting that Leighton Ogg, Houston, TX and Reece Glenn, Winchester, KY, spotted a Series III in the midst of an adventure packed comic strip called “The Phantom”. At a time when classic comic strips are deleted from newspapers nationwide, no wonder the artists behind The Phantom - set in Africa - keep a Land Rover in the picture. It may be the biggest Hollywood public relations scam of all time but a Land Rover keeps it real. M. Night Shyamalan made the box office soar with the hit movie “The Village” *Steven Ratajczyk, Cleveland, TN & Jay Danielson, Mableton, GA, watches as a ranger is

James Wolf, Portsmouth, VA, locates what he is 99% sure is a Defender 90 on the cover of the Virginian Pilot. Jeff Bridges, Denver, CO, tells us he has been seeing Land Rovers everywhere! Here he finds one on the Patagonia website where a gentleman is gearing up for the long haul to Victoria. New South Wales, Australia. Morgan Pierce, Richmond, VA, spies the same 109” on its homepage. Siegler + Co. magazine has a nice collection of “Down Under” clothing that would make any outbacker proud. A fellow “Maineiac” *Mike Coleman, Topsfield, ME, tells us they used to be known as “The Sovietski Collection” but they ran out of Cold War items and are diversifying. He did manage to see a Series II-A 109” in their catalogue, as did *James Dupont, Garden City, NY, who explains if you want to look like you’re in “the outback” you need a Land Rover. No debate here! Mike Ripp, Bagley, WI, found a wonderful story in Legacy Magazine - National Association for Interpretation about protecting the wildlife of Kenya, and included is a famous photo of a cheetah which, of course, takes his seat atop a Rover. I’m not sure how the men in the vehicle can look so calm, with one of natures most ferocious creatures less than a foot away. The Amazing Race takes the Gold for the most Sightings this issue as all the contestants drove Defender 110’s to various locations while performing tasks. In the running for a mug are *Greg Hollingsworth, Colchester, CT, Derek Stevens, Bend, OR, Greg Liebig, Bel Air, MD, James Copass, Yucca Valley, CA, Jason Sheehy, London, OH, and Chance Geurin, Monument, CO, who says “when the runners came out of the airport, one of the team leaders yelled, ‘Look, there’s the Jeeps!” Jeez! Lastly, Paul Brodie, Brookline, MA, found the following Range Rover ad in ‘Bell’Italia’ while traveling in Italy. “Qui troviamo una pubblicit scomparto in Bell’Italia del ` ‘per una nuova Range Rover, con i 4.4 litri V8 o 3.0 motore di litro Td6.” Or, if you don’t read Italian, here’s my translation. “Here we find an advertisement in Bell’Italia” magazine for a new Range Rover, with a 4.4 liter V8 or 3.0 liter Td6 engine. Paul Brodie goes on to say in his travels to Italy he actually sees Rangies on the road, which is amazing since petrol is so expensive over there. Or, as Paul would say in Italy, “Paul Brodie continua a dire nelle sue corse in Italia che realmente vede Rangies sulla strada, che Ë stupefacente poichÈ la benzina Ë cosÏ costosal...”

More information on the Drive Around the World Foundation can be found on our web site or at drivearoundtheworld.com We hope to see you on the trail soon. Happy Rovering,

I am new to the Land rover Scene - Having bought my first - a ‘69 IIA - in February. It is fully restored & I am finding the constant smell of diesel quite intoxicating. An American Serviceman restored it while stationed in England. I am already having problems but I can see this vehicle getting passed on to my children. I appreciate your publication & I’m sure I’ll need your assistance soon.

Yesterday I sent you an e-mail with a snap of a Land Rover on a billboard advertising West Edmonton Mall. I forgot to send our mailing address, just in case it qualifies for a coffee mug. I have attached that picture again, along with one of our 1966 SWB showing a partial load of the 12 Heathcote kids. Our recently acquired 1985 110 gives us greatly appreciated higher seating capacity. The light brown 110 is a Canadian Army surplus 1985 Rover (40,000 Km) acquired by me in 2004. It is painted in light brown camo for use in Afghanistan. It was converted to a low tech stealth vehicle by mixing clay into the paint that it now bears. The truck is now being modified to a five seat crew cab to suit the needs of our family. Another I own is a red 88 Series llA, driven daily since 1970. I am an aircraft maintenance engineer, and I drove this type of Rover with the International Red Cross, out of Wellington, New Zealand, serving in South

I don’t actually own one, although I threaten to buy one at least six times a year. Anyhow, as my wife and I wander about the world I always keep my eyes open for Land Rovers, preferably vintage. I dug out six photos from some of our more recent trips and thought I would send them along to you. Maybe you can use them, maybe not. (Sure would like a cup though, for effort, but I know you have to earn it). Keep up the good work. Maybe one day I’ll be calling for parts. Best regards,

Dear Mark, My Dear Editor, What a pleasant surprise this morning to get note from “The President”. Your kindness serves as a great reminder of a man who is in place to serve the needs of others. All of us need healthy distractions. Keeping my eyes open to all the places that Land Rovers surface is great fun. You stand as an example of what a real leader does with his time, He serves, and it shows. I see some of the places that Rovers North donate to keep various clubs and events moving forward. The old Land Rovers do the same thing...They serve quietly. From one Land Rover to another. Keep up the good work, Leighton Ogg Houston,TX ________ P ________

What a surprise, I received a coveted Rovers North mug and a can of Land Rover coffee. Thank you. You have a non-exclusive fully paid, perpetual license to use the photographs of “Ole Wheelock’ however you want, but you want his permission on the publicity rights, which for I am sure he will give for all of the good publicity for his Fort Charlotte received from posting of the picture of his 109 on the back page of your Summer news letter, he ought to be a happy pioneer. Sorry, Amy was quick with the camera, but not quick enough to get a good look at the grill. Sincerely, William Meservy, proud owner of a 1997 Defender 90, and Amy Luebehusen Concord, MA. [Sure you don’t need a good editor to join you on your travels - hint, hint? -ed].

Tom Bache reports from the Land Rover Series One Club (LRSOC) where they recently held the Fourth North American Series One Club Meet in the Massachussetts countryside. “The weather was being a bit drippy (typical English!), but tech sessions were very informative”. There were 14 Series One vehicles, including a 86” fire engine, 2 Minervas, a 107 SW, 109 PU, 6-80”, and 388” Land Rovers. Wow!
