THE SWEDISH INSTITUTE – Sharing Sweden with the world! • A public agency under the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - work to promote the interest and confidence in Sweden abroad • Use strategic communication to put Sweden and Swedish values, experiences and competences on the map

• Create opportunities for lasting, intercultural relations through project cooperation, scholarships, exhibitions and networks • Focus on culture, society, education, science as well as the business sector

The Sida Baltic Sea Unit joins the Swedish Institute 2012 • Government assignment to coordinate and strengthen Sweden’s overall work in the Baltic Sea Region Objectives • Facilitate an enhanced partnership between Sweden and other countries around the Baltic Sea • Increase the participation of Swedish stakeholders in regional cooperation within priority areas • Complement activities of other Swedish stakeholders in order to implement the EU strategy for the BSR • Provide additional support for regional cooperation under the EU’s Eastern Partnership

WHY? • Region faces major challenges – different stakeholders need to join forces (different levels and different sectors) – top-down and bottom-up. • Universities are crucial stakeholders – in cooperation with e g business sector. • Focus on strong thematic areas can reinforce a positive development.

WHERE? • Financial assistance will be provided to develop cooperation with Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Northwestern Russia, Ukraina and Belarus. • Georgia and Moldova may also participate in academic cooperation, incl. scholarships.

HOW? • The Swedish Institute will be an active dialogue partner • Give advice on international cooperation • Provide funding: projects and individual scholarships

A NEW TASK FOR SI Policy implementation

• EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the North-western parts of Russia) • Eastern Partnership (Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia) • Nortern Dimension, Partnership for Modernization (Russia)

SI-FUNDING - Thematic cooperation projects: 2-3 years in project duration, max 1 000 000 SEK per year. - Seed money: Work shops, studies, project preparation etc.Should lead to external funding (e g from EU) - Individual support: E g travel grants, Master students, researcher mobility, conference participation etc.

THEMATIC COOPERATION PROJECTS Call mid-December = final details • Swedish applicant – but other countries can initiate cooperation • Cross-sectorial and functional partnerships • Focus on addressing challenges in the region; needs analysis important • Projects should contribute to a developement for all involved partners, as well as for the subject area of cooperation

SWEDISH INSTITUTE COOPERATION IN THE BALTIC SEA REGION Master-level scholarships – brief overview • Students from Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine • Programmes of either one or two years, taught in English • ~ 40 scholarships will be offered for the academic year 2012/2013 • Coverage for tuition fees and living expenses (SEK 8,000/month) • Medical insurance • Travel grant • Membership in the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL)

About 260 programs from 29 universities eligible for a scholarship 2. Apply for the selected study program via the Swedish central admissions system (www.universityadmissions.se) 3. Apply for a SI Visby Program scholarship by using our online electronic application form, available at www.studyinsweden.se • Motivation letter • CV • Letter of reference 4. Scholarship application deadline: January 31, 2012. 5. Pay the application fee (mandatory), deadline January 31, 2012

SWEDISH INSTITUTE COOPERATION IN THE BALTIC SEA REGION PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers - overview • Long-term grants available (6-12 months) • Sandwich model scholarship setup for PhD studies, 12 months maximum, divided into several shorter visits to a Swedish university over three years. • Monthly grant: SEK 12,000 for PhD students, SEK 15,000 for Postdocs

Senior scientists • Holders of a PhD but gained the degree before 2007 • Medium-term research visits (up to 6 months) • Monthly grant: SEK 15,000
