TITUSVILLE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT

Milk Carton Decorating Contest In celebration of National Milk Day we held a milk carton decorating contest for the 5th graders at Main Street Elementary school. Clean and sealed milk cartons were donated by Schneider’s Dairy. We delivered enough milk cartons to each class for every student. We had great participation from the students and they were very creative! The student pictured with the bird house was the winner of a $10 gift card. All of the decorated milk cartons (shown below) were on display in the cafeteria for everyone to enjoy!

Board Appreciation Month Citizen oversight of local government is the cornerstone of democracy in the United States. Today, nearly 100,000 citizens serve local communities throughout the nation as school board members, the largest category of elected public officials in the United States. January is School Board Appreciation Month and is a wonderful time to highlight the vital role board members play in our schools and our communities. School boards provide direction and oversight for the professionals who manage the day-to-day operations in the schools. They also provide accountability to the community. They are extraordinary people who contribute countless volunteer hours each year to tackle the job of governing our school districts. Their job entails hundreds of hours attending meetings, school functions, reviewing budgets, attending seminars and training sessions, reading reports and proposals all necessary to make the difficult decisions to serve the needs of the students. School board members come from all walks of life, they are neighbors, friends, community leaders and parents- but in the end they must pull together as a team and work towards one common goal which is making a positive difference for the students. The Nutrition Group would like to take this opportunity to thank the School Board Members of the Titusville Area School District for their time and dedication to assure that the children of the community are receiving the best possible education. We would also like to extend an invitation to each and every one of you to visit the cafeteria to observe and experience the food service operation in your district. If a question or concern should ever arise please contact us so that we may address it. We appreciate your business and thank you for the opportunity to serve you!

Youth Advisory Council Meeting We held a YAC meeting at the Middle school on January 8th. We had one student that did not eat in the cafeteria and that was mostly because of food allergies that she has. We talked about their likes and dislikes about the menu. Of course the popcorn chicken bowl was a favorite along with chicken fries and side salads. They were not satisfied with the portion sizes we had to start serving due to the Federal and State regulations and they felt the food was bland. The students would like to see hot vegetable pizza on the line more often and that is what we will do. We also talked about the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and the changes we had to make regarding the grains, proteins, fruit and vegetables. Not too many of the students care much for vegetables but they all like fruit real well. They are all aware they have to take at least one fruit or veggie on their tray to be considered a reimbursable lunch. We talked about having taste testing at lunch and they want to bring back the healthy snack they had last year due to the Middle school receiving the grant. Mr. McGaughey, Principal, has already set this up with The Nutrition Group for the month of March and April. Overall the meeting went well and the issues we discussed have already been taken care of with the kitchen lead.
