Top Trumps Part one – creating the game T tells sts they are going to play a game. Sts have to create the game cards by drawing 9 different monsters.T gives students the template of the game (see template on page 2) – one sheet with 9 cards per student. T and sts choose the body parts that every monster should have. Sts may draw other body parts if they so wish. T writes the words on the board and sts copy on the 9 cards (in the same order). It is important that every student have the same parts of the body written down on all the cards. e.g.: heads: ________ eyes: ________ noses: ________ ears: ________ arms: ________ legs: ________ Sts decide how many body parts each monster will have and write the number next to the corresponding word. Sts draw their monsters accordingly. e.g.: MONSTER 1 heads: six eyes: eight noses: three ears: eleven arms: four legs: five Suggestion: Since this step might take too long, T should try to do it in the last 15 minutes of class. T asks students to finish their monsters at home, if necessary. When students bring back the cards, T might want to stick a piece of cardboard on the back of the cards to make them stronger so that they can last longer. Sts cut the cards. Part two – playing the game This is a game for two or more players in which the objective is to win all the cards. The game: All players should have their cards in hand and the players hold their cards in a face up stack so that they can see their first card only and the other players cannot see their cards. The starting player chooses one attribute – for example arms. Everyone then reads out the value of that attribute on their first card, e.g.: how many arms each monster has, and whoever has the highest value wins all the first cards, collects them and places them at the bottom of their pile. Whoever wins the cards then chooses any attribute to read from their next card, and again whoever has the best value of this attribute on their top card wins the cards and has the next turn. This continues for as many rounds as necessary, and players are eliminated as they run out of cards. Whoever eventually manages to collect all the cards wins the game. T encourages sts use the language learned while they are playing: “How many arms do you/ does your monster have?”, “I have/ It has …. arms”.
