Capacity Building Assistance

Metro TeenAIDS is a community health organization dedicated to supporting young people in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Through education, support, and advocacy, MTA works to prevent the spread of HIV, promote responsible decision making, and improve the quality of life for young people infected with, or affected by HIV/AIDS. MTA offers capacity building assistance (CBA) for organizations to enhance HIV prevention efforts for youth in Washington, DC. This training menu details the FREE workshops available through MTA’s Capacity Building Assistance department. Any community-based organization that works with youth (ages 13-24) can request training from this list. Organizations may also request training on topics not listed here; if MTA is unable to provide that training, it will make a referral to the appropriate CBA provider.

TRAINING MENU: CAPACITY BUILDING ASSISTANCE

PREVENTION & EDUCATION FUNDAMENTALS OF HIV PREVENTION COUNSELING This two-day interactive training is designed to disseminate knowledge and skills needed to successfully apply high-quality HIV counseling, testing, and referral (CTR) services. The training utilizes a curriculum recommended by the District of Columbia’s Department of Health and teaches a quality assurance process for client-focused HIV prevention counseling. This training is typically geared towards organizations that are implementing CTR programming and organizations who want to certify staff and interns in CTR. (16 hours) HIV PREVENTION COUNSELING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE This interactive workshop serves as a supplement to the Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling training. The session will focus on reiterating the prevention counseling steps, including conducting thorough risk behavior assessments based on your agency’s intake forms and practicing delivering results. (4 hours) HIV PREVENTION LINKAGE TO CARE This training will discuss fundamental approaches of linking HIV+ persons to care, including ways to increase the percentage of HIV+ young people engaged in treatment and reconnect Persons Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) who have dropped out. In compliance with the requirements of the Linkage to Care (LTC) Protocols, participants will learn steps to effectively connect clients from HIV testing to care, provide client-focused referrals and identify challenges throughout the process. (4 hours) HIV & SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS (STI) This comprehensive workshop will provide participants with basic information about HIV/STIs, including understanding complications, dispelling myths and learning about the epidemiology of HIV and STIs. Discussion will focus on which populations in the District are disproportionately affected and the public health importance of being screened for HIV/STIs. (4 hours) HIV 2.0: WHAT’S NEW WITH HIV TODAY? This workshop is designed to update organizations and service providers on the latest research and linkage to care resources for HIV/AIDS. It will discuss behavioral and biomedical prevention strategies, and participants will develop a comprehensive understanding on the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy based on drug regimens and treatment adherence. (4 hours)

HUMAN TRAFFICKING AMONG DC YOUTH This training will discuss the vulnerabilities that place some youth at greater risk for becoming victims of human trafficking and susceptible to potential negative health outcomes, including contracting HIV/STIs. The session will focus on describing the realities of human trafficking and exploring how both stigma and the glorification of pimp culture perpetuate this issue. (3 hours) LEARNING AND USING THE FEMALE CONDOM This workshop will explore the history, design and utilization of the female condom (FC2). Facilitated as a train-the-trainer session, participants will discuss the FC2’s advantages in preventing pregnancy and HIV/STIs and learn skills for effectively promoting the FC2 to consumers. (2 hours) TRACKING THE THEORY: THE HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF AIDS This training provides a comprehensive view of the history and origin of HIV. Delivered through a chronological timeline, this workshop explores the widely accepted theories and chronicles the proliferation of the virus in the United States. Participants will leave this workshop not only with more knowledge about the history of the epidemic, but also with an enriched view of our response to it. This workshop is especially useful for professionals new to the HIV/AIDS field. (4 hours)

COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FUNDAMENTALS OF FACILITATION & PUBLIC SPEAKING This workshop explores best practices for delivering effective presentations, speeches, and trainings. Through activities and role play, participants will learn how to be culturally savvy, utilize communication styles and tools proven to reach youth in a variety of settings, and practice classroom management skills. The material places emphasis on engaging youth ages 13-24 in health and wellness issues. (3 hours) ICEBREAKERS, ENERGIZERS & ACTIVITIES TO REACH YOUTH This interactive workshop will teach participants how to incorporate fun-filled and educational activities to enhance youth programs, including trainings, small group sessions, roundtables and focus groups. Please note that this training is not a lecture, but rather activity-based and may involve standing or moving around for extended periods. (2 hours)

LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX: EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR HIV/AIDS PREVENTION This professional development workshop will explore strategies and best practices for communicating with youth on sexual and reproductive health issues. Participants will learn the basics of HIV/STI prevention, tactics for engaging youth communities on sexual health, and resources and tools available for youth to protect their bodies. (4 hours) USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO ENGAGE YOUTH This training explores how community-based organizations can utilize social media and online outreach to engage youth and promote prevention programming. It discusses the basic concepts of common social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Grindr and blog sites, to understand how web technology affects the way youth receive and share information and determine best practices for reaching youth using these tools. (2 hours)

LGBTQ CULTURAL COMPETENCY CREATING SAFE SPACES FOR LGBTQ YOUTH This training focuses on how to create safe and affirming environments for youth, especially those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning (LGBTQ). Participants will explore what constitutes a “safe space”, discuss best practices for achieving it, and understand how to diffuse volatile situations. This session also addresses the law, bullying and harassment, and mandatory reporting requirements for youth-serving professionals. (4 hours) LGBTQ YOUTH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FROM A TO Z This workshop explores 26 issues relative to working with young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer or questioning (LGBTQ). The session focuses on the cultural factors that influence the behavior of LGBTQ youth and explores related issues such as coming out, discrimination and gender roles. (4 hours) TRANSGENDER AWARENESS This workshop explores abstract concepts associated with gender and sex to further understand culturally competent terminology, life, and experiences of people who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming. This session will focus on dispelling myths, discussing best practices in engaging with transgender people, and understanding the unique perspective of transgender youth in DC. (2 hours) WORKING WITH TRANSGENDER YOUTH IN HEALTH CARE This training focuses on enhancing health care interactions and positive outcomes with transgender youth and understanding the importance of delivering respectful and culturally responsive treatment to transgender clients, members, and employees. (2 hours)

WORKING WITH YOUNG MSM IN THE DISTRICT The goal of this workshop is to highlight the ongoing risk for HIV infection among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). This training will create discussion about the underlying socioeconomic and cultural disparities, including unemployment, access to medical care, and other structural issues that facilitate risky sexual behavior. This training also explores the underscored need to reach each new generation, with effective HIV prevention messages. (2 hours)

PROGRAM DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT HIV PROGRAM DESIGN & INTEGRATION This training will assist providers in assessing the readiness of their organization to design and implement HIV/AIDS prevention programming. An emphasis will be placed on identifying gaps in services within the community and the development of programs based on best practices from the field, including following the HIV care continuum markers. Participants will learn how to craft S.M.A.R.T. objectives, realistic logic models and basic evaluation tools to support HIV prevention programs geared towards youth. (8 hours) MAKING AN IMPACT: UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUTPUTS & OUTCOMES This workshop will focus on understanding the difference between programmatic outputs and outcomes. Participants will learn how to develop S.M.A.R.T. objectives and logic models and understand basic techniques to improve outcome analysis. (2 hours) PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT The goal of this workshop is for participants to learn and utilize performance management tools to continually collect and evaluate data for improving programs and service delivery. This training will discuss how to develop ongoing tracking systems that hold staff accountable to their passions, mission goals, and funding requirements. (4 hours) SURVEY SAVVY This workshop explores how organizations can better evaluate programs by developing solid survey tools. This session defines the difference between process and outcome evaluations, and stresses the benefits of solid program evaluation. This training will help participants select the most appropriate evaluation method for its youth-focused programs. (4 hours)
