Soccer dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, it was a violent game played between rival villages. Each team had an unlimited number of players. There were no rules and the ball was one of a pig’s internal organs.

A: Do you think tennis is more 3 than soccer?

Modern soccer started to become popular in Britain in the 19th century. Soccer was cheap; it needed very little equipment apart from a ball, and you could play it anywhere, in any weather. The first team was Sheffield United. Intercity competitions were common and the Football League was founded in 1888. Because factories and mines shut at noon on Saturday, workers could go and watch the games, which started at 3:00 p.m. The number of spectators grew fast and so special stadiums were built. The owners of the stadiums knew there was a good business opportunity and started to charge money for admission to the stadium. They also began to pay money to players to attract the best ones.

By 1930, crowds of 60,000 were the norm for the big teams. The invention of the radio allowed people to follow the games and hear the results. English sailors took the game to Spain, Italy, Brazil, and Argentina. The first World Cup was in 1930, and when cheap flights started in the 1950s and 1960s, world competitions started to become more popular.
