Nationally published authors John Claude Bemis, Sheila Turnage, Zelda Lockhart, and Devyn Dawson will be available for book signings and offer free writing and publishing workshops as part of the Pamlico County Library’s NaNoWriMo celebration on Saturday, November 3rd. At 10:00 am. Children's book author John Claude Bemis will discuss how writers use their personal passions and individual interests to write unique and wildly creative stories. He will share how his experiences growing up in Pamlico County as well as his love of Southern folklore, magical adventures, and music fostered his love for stories. John is the author of the Clockwork Dark trilogy. The first book The Nine Pound Hammer (Random House) won the NC Juvenile Literature Award and was a New York Public Library Best Book 2009 for Reading and Sharing. His latest novel The Prince Who Fell from the Sky has been called "a post-apocalyptic Jungle Book" and was selected as an Amazon Best Book of the Month. Mr. Bemis will be available for book signings at 11:30 am. Sheila Turnage, author of Three Times Lucky, will present a workshop at 1:00 pm called Creating Characters That Breathe as part of the Pamlico County Library’s NaNoWriMo writing workshops on November 3. In Three Times Lucky, the town’s crankiest citizen turns up dead and a cityslick lawman comes to town, Mo’s life in Tupelo Landing turns upside down. “In Three Times Lucky, Mo and Dale set out to solve a murder and end up solving the mysteries of their own lives,” Turnage says. “Kids and adults really like this book. One reason is the character of Mo LoBeau, who narrates the story. She’s smart, funny, and spunky. “Creating a character is actually a lot of fun so I’m really looking forward to the workshop,” she says. I’ll bring some of my favorite writing exercises, and we’ll focus on creating and developing characters. I’m looking forward to sitting in on the other writers’ workshops, too.” Three Times Lucky has received starred reviews from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, Literary Media Connection, and Booklist. It’s a Junior Library Guild selection and a SIBA “Okra Pick,” and has been recommended by both Amazon.com and

Barnes&Noble.com. Ms. Turnage will be available for book signings at 2:30 pm. ZELDA LOCKHART is author of the novel Fifth Born, which was a 2002 Barnes & Noble Discovery selection and won a finalist award for debut fiction from the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Legacy Foundation. Ms. Lockhart holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Norfolk State University, a Master’s in English from Old Dominion University, and a certificate in writing, directing and editing film from the New York Film Academy. Zelda Lockhart's Creative Writing Workshop at 4:00 pm will utilize writing exercises that get at the heart and soul of your creativity and is designed to help adult and young adult writers produce fresh new work based on life experiences, Whether you are writing fiction, poetry, or memoir this workshop will offer exercises that will stay with you for a lifetime. Interested individuals can meet Ms. Lockhart and have books signed at 5:15 pm. Devyn Dawson is a full time writer, wife and pet owner. She's been writing since she was a small child. Devyn writes paranormal YA books about the characters that live in her head. You’ll usually find her either writing or reading and sometimes doing both. She has always been the ‘eccentric girl’ the one with the big imagination and colorful stories. She was born and raised in Oklahoma City, a place she’ll always call home yet lives in the lush green and humid climate of New Bern, North Carolina. In high school you would have found her and her personalities entertaining her audience (everyone), her love for theater and creative writing earned her many awards. She was Goth before Goth was a style, she dreamt of being Star from The Lost Boys and knew Keifer would one day find her and they’d fall madly in love. Her love of the paranormal (The Lost Boys reference confirms it’s been a passion long before Edward met Bella) brought to life her breakthrough e-book The Legacy of Kilkenny. In the book you’ll root for the bad guy, dream of the good guy, long to be the good girl, and love to hate the bad girl. Ms. Dawson’s workshop at 6:00 pm will provide a look into what to do to build your author platform as you publish your book. A renowned e-book publisher, she will cover everything from social networking to creating a virtual book tour. Her scheduled

book signing will begin at 7:30 pm. This event is free to the public and was made possible with funds by the Pamlico County Arts Council and the NC Arts Council, a division of the NC Department of Cultural Resources. Please call 252-745-3515 to register if interested in attending, for workshop schedule or to get additional information.
