CAMDEN TOWN, NW1

The music scene in the UK is the most diverse and influential in the world and nowhere is this more typified than in the hub of all things musical: Camden Town Musicians have flocked to Camden for decades, everyone from Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and the Doors to Madness and the battling Blur and Oasis. Now more influential than ever, the Camden music scene is embodied in its very own festival, the Camden Crawl, which for two days every Spring, sees over 300 artists perform in more than 40 venues and concludes – where else? – but in KOKO.

HISTORY

If buildings could talk then 1A Camden High Street would have a tale to tell Since opening in 1900 it has functioned as a theatre, a variety venue and a BBC studio, hosting show business legends like Charlie Chaplin and The Goons. As a rock venue, the Music Machine, it hosted gigs by The Clash and Sex Pistols before its purchase by Steve Strange and Rusty Egan of the band Visage, who established the Camden Palace as the epicentre of the New Romantics and London’s burgeoning club scene. But as Camden became a mecca for a new generation of clued-up youth and famed for the most visited open-air market in Europe, this grand and great venue did not move with the times. The venue lay derelict until its purchase and transformation by Mint Entertainment in 2005.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

When KOKO was reborn as the ultimate 21st century nightclub and live music venue in 2004, KOKO enlisted the help of the Harman Group of companies to create the very best sound system available Utilising the most up to date digital technology, sound engineers can access and adjust all of the venue’s amplification from a single laptop computer, located anywhere in the venue. Sound mixing is carried out using Soundcraft Vi6 digital live consoles which boast the latest in colour coded touchscreen-driven user interfaces. One console handles front-of-house (audience) sound while the other is used to mix the sound heard by the musicians and performers on stage. Audio technology such as this does not come cheap but the result of this investment is a fully integrated and bespoke sound system that is the envy of the world’s finest live music venues.
