DVDs have arrived As of May of this year Lloydminster Public Library added DVDs to its collection. Thanks to a grant from the Alberta government, the Library has purchased several hundred titles in the popular DVD format. There is something to suit every taste with the new DVDs. As with our VHS titles the Library cannot afford to compete with companies that charge rental fees so popular new Hollywood releases are not included. What is included are: recommended adaptations of literary classics such as

Shakespeare and Jane Austen; acclaimed television productions from PBS and A&E; documentaries for both children and

adults; travel videos; home renovation and construction videos; health and fitness videos; and children’s stories, including folk and fairy tales. Library patrons may borrow up to four DVDs at a

Public Internet users at the Library will soon have a new way of signing on for a session. Once our new sign-in system is implemented, you will sign in directly with your library card number and PIN. You can already check your library account online using your library card number and PIN. You can

also renew items you have on loan or reserve items. Don’t know your PIN? Reference staff are more than happy to tell you your PIN and show you how to access your library account. Stop by the Reference Desk or call for a quick tutorial. Staff can take you through step-by-step.

time. The loan period is one week, the same as for videos in VHS format. Since DVDs are a more fragile format and can be damaged if heavy items (such as books) are thrown on top of them, DVDs must be returned to the Circulation Desk and not in the outside book drop. For those without a DVD player, be assured that we haven’t gotten rid of our VHS tapes. The library continues to purchase videocassettes when available. Unfortunately, VHS tapes are becoming harder to find and many items are now only available on DVD.

Are you looking for interesting and stimulating activities to occupy your children during summer vacation? Would you like them to benefit from a program that will maintain and develop their reading skills? How about a fun-filled environment where your children can participate and meet new friends? Each year from July to August, the TD Summer Reading Club encourages children 12 and under to read, in order to make it easier for them to go back to school in September.

Every summer, kids can improve their reading skills while having fun. A wide variety of exciting activities is designed around a different theme each year by public library staff to support kids in their enjoyment of reading. This years theme is Lost Worlds. Join us as we discover ancient civilizations, lost empires, buried cities, and mysterious lands. This year's program artwork is from illustrator Joe Weissman.

Kids, 12 and under, who register with the TD Summer Reading Club receive a poster, stickers and an activity book all free as part of their reading kit. Sign up at the Library’s front desk. By encouraging your children to register for the Club you help them continue to learn during their vacation.
