Within the Service Operations Department, we are equally dedicated to developing fresh ideas that will benefit the company and our customers. I have been working in this department for four years and have experienced immense growth and challenges, especially with technological innovation progressing so rapidly. It is even more crucial now for us to find new ways of exceeding our customers’ increasingly high expectations. My role as the Head of Service Operations is to ensure that our initiatives are followed through and excellent customer service is delivered at customers’ first point of contact. All our authorised dealerships serve to unify Honda’s customer service enhancement efforts. We work together with our dealers by providing ongoing support every step of the way. This year, we have started welcoming dealers to participate in the New Honda Circle so that they can benefit from the wealth of knowledge shared in this network. The New Honda Circle is an initiative that helps associates discover new ways of improving their work, their workplace and the company. We have also implemented the Green Dealer program to foster environmentally responsible activities within dealerships. This is part of Honda’s global efforts in overcoming environmental issues in addition to ongoing research and development in ecotechnologies. All of our dealers have started initiating Green Dealer concept in their operations and we look forward to achieving full compliance within the next two years. As we progress into 2011, we remain committed to delivering new value to our customers. At the same time, we are very excited to end the year with the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010. Jennifer Chai timidly glides into the makeover studio and her expression was of a quiet obedience as the stylist works on her hair and makeup. An hour later, she whips out her digital camera and asks if she could take some pictures. “It is for my blog,” she says bashfully. She has been blogging for a year and admits that it is an avenue for her to express her thoughts freely. “I love taking pictures and am inspired by being in the moment. Accidental scenes and a stranger’s expression intrigue me so you will always find a camera in my bag,” she explains.
Jennifer gets into her groove and shows us her charming side.
At the photo shoot, Jennifer emerged a completely transformed and glamorous young lady from her usual jeans and tee style. When asked how she feels about being in front of the camera, she exclaims animatedly, “I am very excited!” Her bubbly and youthful spirit is befitting of a young 24-year old. Unlike many girls her age, however, she is one jet-setter who has a strong tenacity to succeed in any of her endeavours. “I am very blessed that my current job allows me to travel around the world. I have no qualms about travelling alone because it gives me time to absorb new ideas” she says. In fact, she was in Germany for three weeks when contacted for this makeover shoot. “I was there partly for work but managed to squeeze in some time for a short holiday. I have been around Asia and some parts of Middle East and simply love the uniqueness of each country,” says the media executive with the palpable wanderlust.
At just 24, she displays confidence and maturity that belies her youthful age.
“To be honest, I prefer simple luxuries in life like spending time with my family. I may travel a lot but one should never forget their roots.”

Otherwise, I love driving so you will find me in my trusty Honda City on road trips, exploring my own country.”
Jennifer is also self-profess nerd. “As a child, I was so engrossed with studies that I had to be told to stop reading! My parents were worried and had to coerce me to put down my school books after 7pm to watch TV,” she laughs. She tries to warm up for the camera as the crew prepares the days’ first shots.
When asked if she was a straight A’s student, she smiles. “I definitely developed my steadfastness from an early age. My parents run a restaurant so they were always occupied, which gave me a lot of freedom while growing up. I learnt not to take decision-making for granted and to overcome my own challenges so they did not have to worry about me.” “What is amazing,” says Jennifer, “is that we all have 24 hours a day. I think we should be grateful and make each moment count. After 16 years, Sri Utama remains rooted in achieving customer loyalty
“There is one customer that I will never forget,” shares Imran bin Ismail, Service Manager of Sri Utama Auto Sdn. Bhd., as we speak of the dealership’s initiatives as a Honda 3S Centre. “A European customer walked in to our service centre years ago with a Civic ‘82 and asked if we were up for the challenge to refurbish his old vehicle. That left quite an impression because not only did we work very closely with him but the restoration took us one year to complete and after that, he unexpectedly migrated to France, with his car!” “Our directors, Wong Chee Keong and Yap Seng Teong, were technicians themselves,” he continues. “They were imperative in training the early batch of service advisors, myself included. We all doubled up as technicians in the service bays while managing daily operations because we were a small team back then,” Imran says modestly. “We realised we have gained recognition for our quality service when we were handpicked to refurbish the customer’s vintage Civic.” Sri Utama traces back its roots as a service centre in 1996 before establishing itself as a 3S Centre in 2004. According to Imran, their

We used what little space we had to service customers’ cars. Every one devoted their time and effort to ensure our customers’ needs were not short-changed while we rebuilt the showroom.” “The incident brought us closer rather than set us back. If I were to describe our finest moments, that will be it. It is the small things that brings us together, whether among employees or with customers,” continues Allan.
“It was challenging initially as Sri Utama had a team of capable technicians but no sales person. Thankfully, Honda had created a system that enhances customer satisfaction at all stages, from sales to after-sales service. With that guidance, we built upon our own trainings to strengthen the team over the years,” says Allan Chew, Sales Manager.

One Challenge. One Dream. One Honda. Teamwork speaks volume at the recent Tech Challenge “I am overwhelmed and certainly very proud of my team for stepping up to win this challenge,” says Sam Wong, Service Manager of Ban Lee Heng Sdn. Bhd., still reeling from the excitement after Ban Lee Heng was announced the champion of Tech Challenge 2010. “We have been striving to establish a unified dealership environment to coordinate efforts among employees to exceed customers’ expectations,” Sam continues. “So after today, I will expect a lot more progress and desire to perform, like how our team did today at the challenge!” It was a sea of nervous faces at HMSB Training Centre in Pegoh Plant, Melaka, where the competition was held. Dealership personnel and managers who came to support their participating teams showed equal amount of anxiety as they watched their teams intently through each challenge. 14 | with dreams
Tech Challenge is Honda Malaysia’s annual competition to raise the bar for dealerships and service centres’ personnel nationwide to deliver service excellence to Honda customers. This year, eight dealerships and six Body & Paint centres qualified for the competition to challenge their skills and efficiency in working as a team. Unlike previous competitions where contestants were judged individually based on their skills, this year saw an even more intensive judging criteria as representatives from each category were evaluated as a team to contribute to the overall winning points of the participating dealerships and Body & Paint centres. Each dealer competed in the Customer Relations Executive (CRE), Sales, Service, Technician (Foreman) and Parts Controller categories to show the full process of a dealer’s daily operations. The Sales Advisors, Service Advisors, CRE and Parts Controller were tested on their quality
of standard procedures and customer interactions while the Technicians (Foreman) and Body & Paint Repair Technicians were gauged on their competencies in diagnosis and repair techniques. Sri Utama BP Sdn. Bhd. emerged as champions in the Body & Paint category this year, an anticipated win judging from their efficient display of quality workmanship during the group competitions. “We have been participating in Tech Challenge for a few years and it has definitely helped to hone some valuable skills, which are then taught to the other technicians in our Body & Paint centre,” says Michael Lai, BP Manager of Sri Utama. “I must applaud them for their dedication and focus. Having the right attitude is something that precedes skills and this is something that we try to enforce in our centre to uphold the quality that our customers expect from us,” he adds.

Know your
basic fuel system
One of the major components that power your car is the fuel system. The moment the engine starts, the fuel flows through a fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump. The fuel injection system supplies a clean air and fuel mixture that triggers the engine to run. Poor maintenance of the fuel system will result in weaker engine performance and if any of these parts break down, the engine could stop running.
While there are a number of things that can cause your fuel system to fail, the most prevalent one is dirt. This is why the fuel and air filter components are often said to be the vehicle’s front line defence because it prevents dirt from entering the fuel system. The fuel injection system is very susceptible to damage from dirt. When tiny foreign particles and deposits are allowed to build up inside, it prevents fuel from delivering to the engine. Proper maintenance of these parts is usually recommended by your car dealer during your scheduled service to keep the fuel system healthy.

Fuel Injection System Fuel Tank: It holds the fuel supply and contains a sending unit which tells the fuel gauge how much fuel remains in the tank. It is important to ensure that the nozzle is clean so that the fuel is free of dirt when it is transferred into the tank. Fuel Injection System: The system mixes fuel with air in the internal combustion engine, with its main component being the fuel injector - an electrically activated valve that sprays exactly the right amount of fuel to the intake valves of the engine. The pulse width, controlled by the vehicle’s ECU, determines the amount of time the fuel injector stays open. Fuel Line: It is a hose that regulates the flow of fuel and is connected to the fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel injectors. A clogged fuel line is like clogged arteries, and will cause difficulties in starting the car.
Fuel Pump: While older vehicles uses a mechanical fuel pump, most modern cars now have electrical fuel pumps, which draws fuel from the tank and deliver it under high pressure to the fuel injectors. The pump relies on adequate amount of fuel to keep it lubricated and is controlled by the ECU. Fuel Filter: It functions to trap contaminants before the fuel flows to the fuel pump. A blocked filter means debris can spread to the rest of the fuel system. Air Cleaner: Like the fuel filter, the air cleaner prevents particles and dirt from getting into the air/fuel mixture. A clean air filter helps your engine breathe better and help you achieve better fuel efficiency.

Why you should replace your oil and air filter Well-maintained oil and air filters ensure that clean fuel and air gets mixed before it is supplied to the fuel injectors. In most cars, the oil filter is located either by the fuel tank or near the engine while the air cleaner housing is located in the engine compartment. The oil and air filter traps foreign particles like dust and rust from entering the engine. Over time, these particles accumulate and clog both the oil and air filter, which could easily cause the engine to overheat, the spark plugs to
fail and other drivability issues. This is why a regular replacement is necessary to ensure optimal engine performance. If your engine starts choking when you start your vehicle or if you notice an obvious decrease in fuel mileage, it is a clear sign that the oil or air filter may be clogged with contaminants and it is time to replace them. Otherwise, replacing any of the filters as scheduled in your service maintenance should keep your car running smoothly.

When there is more room in the tank, water vapour starts forming from the air that fills the tank. This can cause the insides of your tank to rust, which accumulates as sludge at the bottom of the tank. While it does no harm when the tank is full, the bottom mixture gets fed to the engine when fuel level is low, thus causes the fuel pump to clog.
