Teacher’s notes Aim

Preparation

To practise conditional 1 questions and answers.

1 Photocopy and cut up 1 copy of exercise 1 for each student.

Task

2 Photocopy 1 questionnaire for each pair of students.

Question/answer matching. Questionnaire. Peer drilling.

Timing 20 - 30 minutes

Activity type Pair work Procedure 1 Hand out exercise 1 seperately and allow your students five minutes to complete it. Check their answers orally around the classroom, encouraging students to read out the questions and answers in full. 2 Pair of your students, matching more able students with less able students when possible. 3 Give copies of the questionnaire to the less able students in the pair. The more able student should not be able to see the questionnaire. 4 The student with the questionnaire (A) puts a question to the other student (B): “What will you do if the weather is bad this weekend?” B should provide a natural answer: “I’ll go to the cinema.” A should note the answer. B should then reiterate the question from memory also taking a note of the answer. This procedure should be followed until all 10 questions have been asked and answered. 5 Monitor the first stage of the activity. If you think that A could benefit from it, ask B to take the questionnaire and repeat the exercise. As this is a drilling exercise the purpose of which is to give students targeted practice in conditional 1 questions, encourage your students to carry out the activity as swiftly as possible. 6 Having completed the first phase of the activity, put your students into different pairs. The questions can be asked again in reference to students phase 1 partners. Students will at this stage have to refer to the notes they made in phase 1. So A should ask “What will Stefan do if the weather is bad this weekend?” and the B should reply “He’ll go to the cinema.” This procedure should be continued until all 10 questions have been answered. Variation The activity can then be extended by asking students to make up their own questions in conditional 1 which they can put to other students in the class. Monitor this phase of the activity closely ensuring that students understand the form of conditional 1.Offer your support where necessary. Answer key Exercise 1 1d
