What You Said…. and What We Did….

November 2011

We receive feedback from students via unit questionnaires, the Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC), Faculty Quality Assurance Team (FQAT) discussions with students, the exit questionnaire for final year students and via the National Student Survey (NSS). All this information is very useful to us when we review our teaching. This document aims to give you some examples of “What you said and what we did” about the feedback we received. Year 3

You said.................... ....that you wanted the opportunity to practice essays in the final year

3

....that you liked the written feedback on the project Introduction

3

....that you wanted the project talks to be assessed

3

....that Dr Steward’s research tips in Stem Cell Transplantation were helpful

3

....that the presentation skills talk could be more relevant to the project talks

2

....that second year students would like to learn more about final year projects

2

....that second year students would like to learn more about final year lecture units

2

.... that it was very difficult to get from Berkeley Square to University Walk in the 10 minutes between lectures

1

....that you appreciated the provision of eBiolabs for first year Biochemistry practicals, as well as for Microbes and Disease and the Pathological Responses of Cells

What we did..................... ....introduced an examination-style essay to give you the opportunity to receive formative feedback. This year the essay can be written on an exam question from one of the first five units on offer. ....introduced a proforma for project supervisors to provide feedback on the Results and outline of the Discussion for lab projects or on the Analysis and Discussion for dry projects. This was trialled and worked well last year, and will be continued. ....this year the talks have been brought forward to Week 7 and will be assessed. ....organised for Dr Steward to give the session for any final year students who wished to attend. 34% of those who attended the session found it “of some help” and 56% found it “very helpful”. ....Dr Pullen gave the session and tried to ensure that it was relevant to the project presentations. ....last year times were arranged for second year students to see first class final year project dissertations and posters on the research interests of CMM staff. This will be repeated this year. ....a session will be organised for second year students to hear from unit organisers about the lecture units. ....relocated the following second year lectures to minimise the distance to the next session. ....introduced eBiolabs to support practical teaching in Introduction to Microbiology and the Biology of Normal and Tumour Cells. eBiolabs materials are currently under development for the second year unit Recombinant DNA Technology.

General

General

….that you would like Personal Tutors to provide academic tutorials in all subjects for their tutees

....that occasional lecturers didn’t provide handouts

….we thought that it would be much better to have the relevant experts delivering academic tutorials. Where possible Personal Tutors giving academic tutorials were scheduled to have their tutees in their groups for TB-2 in 2010/11. This pilot was thought to have worked well, allowing tutors to be better informed of their tutees progress, and so this model will be repeated this year. ....we have tried to ensure that handouts are provided and that presentations are made available on Blackboard.
