This global address list reflects information as compiled by Christine Schönberg between December 2014 to January 2019. It was collated through annual surveys posted on PoriferaList and by contacting some people directly. Please cite this resource as Schönberg CHL (2019) Who is who in sponge science 2019. In: Van Soest RWM, Boury-Esnault N, Hooper JNA, Rützler K, de Voogd NJ, Alvarez B, Hajdu E, Pisera AB, Manconi R, Schönberg CHL, Klautau M, Picton B, Kelly M, Vacelet J, Dohrmann M, Díaz M-C, Cárdenas P, Carballo JL, Rios P, Downey R (2019) World Porifera Database. Accessed at http://www.marinespecies.org/porifera on [present date].

If people continue to inform Christine of changes (corrections, new arrivals, changes of circumstances or leaving sponge sciences), this list can be updated and published once per year, creating an overview over time that will show the evolution of the community of sponge scientists over time. Christine will post her address change via PoriferaList (JISCMAIL) if applicable. Entries in black: Active sponge scientists, who have confirmed their entries in this list or were entered by their supervisors. People were listed here regardless of the percentage of time spent working on sponges (although by far most stated that they work 100% of their time on sponges) and regardless of their career status (including amateurs, students, early to late career sponge workers and active retirees). Entries in grey: People who are not presently actively contributing to sponge science, but would like to stay connected. The last column states when displayed information was entered or last checked to provide a measure of currentness. People who do not provide updates within 5 years of that date will be assumed as inactive in sponge science and thereafter listed in grey or deleted from the list.

2015; I am the Senior Marine and Lab Technician since 1987 and do plenty of WQ and reef work, but my passion remains with the sponges. I ID sponges since 1988; I visually know many of the sponge species in Barbados and most of the Eastern Caribbean fairly well. I am working on a basic ‘visual’ sponge guide for Barbados. I keep an eye on what is happening underwater – the dive shops are good about letting someone at CERMES know if they see anything abnormal. I enjoy being in the sea doing field work more than anything. I would like to be involved in some research.

https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=3344816 2015; MSc candidate. I am interested in ecology 39 of sponges. I have already collected sponges in many places in Indonesia and still waiting to be identified further. I also study about the morphology and taxonomy and try to identify the sponges have been collected. Sometimes I also collaborate with sponge scientists who are interested in metabolite compounds.

2015; research on corals and sponges at a range of different levels of organisation (genome-gene regulatory networks-cells-tissue-organism). Modelling and analysis of gene regulation. Biomineralisation (experimental and modelling work). Growth and form, and the influence of light and hydrodynamics on the morphological plasticity and calcification / silicification. This work is a combination of modelling work, a genetic comparison between different growth forms, phylogenetics, morphometrics of 3D growth forms obtained from CT scans, microCTs and field work.

2015; I am interested in the fossil record of nonspicular sponges, especially keratose and verongid demosponges. Sponge taphonomy (processes related to the fossilization of sponges) and (paleo-) ecology need to be investigated. Sponge evolution, which is naturally related to taxonomy of fossils, will probably be taken into my future scope of study as well.

In chungen particular we are looking at trades which aid sponges to outcompete corals (e.g. growth, secondary metabolites). Of special interest are sponge chemical defences and allopathic interactions. We are also investigating sponge microbial communities using traditional culturing and next generation sequencing techniques. Alexander von HumboldtFoundation alumni.

2015; I'm a newcomer in sponges research. My undergraduate research was community structure of marine sponges in Pasir Putih Situbondo. It was published in the POMITS journal, titled Struktur Komunitas Spons Laut (porifera) di Pantai Pasir Putih Situbondo. Now I'm studying in Airlangga University and try to study sponges deeper. I'm interested in cyanobacterial endosymbionts in Xestospongia testudinaria and vertical distribution of marine sponges Baluran National Park Situbondo.
