WHO WAS DR. MATARAZZO? As a gastroenterologist diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, Stephen A. Matarazzo, M.D. personally experienced his patients’ excruciating symptoms. As a result, he was an especially devoted champion in Crohn’s education and treatment—well into his final days when he succumbed to cancer in 2011. Dr. Matarazzo was on track to become a gastroenterologist when he found out he had Crohn’s 47 years ago. That only energized him to pursue his career. He was the founder and lead partner of Fox Chase GI where he practiced for 25 years. He served as chief of gastroenterology at Jeanes Hospital in Philadelphia and at Nazareth Hospital, where he also was president of the medical staff. He also was affiliated with Chestnut Hill and Abington Lansdale Hospitals. Most recently, he was a partner with Hillmont GI in Flourtown, Pa. For his efforts, the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation recognized him “physician of the year” in 1994. Dr. Matarazzo was a graduate of St. Joseph’s University and earned his medical degree from Hahnemann University Medical School. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. He will be remembered as a passionate advocate for Crohn’s patients. # # #
