From the President of the Board of Directors - My Sentiments Recently I attended a wedding. The groom was a Sheptytsky Institute alumnus. Since a fair number of guests were Sheps alumni, their anecdotes about their struggles and successes while living at Sheps were interesting and very entertaining. Actually, the sharing of their experiences were more than the recall of fond memories. Sheps was more than a building they remembered. It was a way of life. Values, knowledge, wisdom, were blessings they received as do others who come to dwell within its walls. Sentimentality struck me a full blow last June at Yorkton during Vidpust. At 12 noon while the Divine Liturgy was being celebrated, the wrecking ball struck at the walls of St. Joseph’s College building. It is gone! The site is leveled. No stone upon its tomb to glorify its legacy. Within those walls bonds were formed which enriched our lives. Those walls symbolized the continuity between our formative years and the career paths we followed. May He, born in a stable, bring you joy, health, and peace during the festive season of 2004-2005. On behalf of Metropolitan Sheptytsky Society

Lazurko, Mr. John Kuzub, Rev. John Olynyk and Mr. Bohdan Popowych. The executive of the Board of Directors of the Society effective December 1, 1975 were: President, Mr. F. Nakonechny, Vice-President, Mr. W. Podiluk, Secretary, Mr. P. Abrametz and Treasurer, Mr. N. Wasylenko. ...Incorporated under the Societies Act of Saskatchewan on March 25, 1976, the Metropolitan Sheptytsky Society of Saskatchewan had taken over full control of the Institute on December 1, 1975, and continues to enjoy this privilege up to the present day. ...The person who has filled the role of Operations Manager for the MSSS since 1975, and for the Bishop before then, is the Rev. Deacon Stephan Kurywchak. Born in Western Ukraine in 1920, he took a three year male nurse’s course in Cracow. He then took a course in cantorship in Peremyshl in 1939. Arrested by the NAZI SS in 1941, he was placed in the Buchenwald concentration camp. He was liberated by American troops and worked at the Rothwesten Army Air Base in Germany. He also served as camp leader of the UNRRA Assembly Centre 718 Hofgeismar, Germany. His next employment was as a cook’s helper in the Second Infantry Regiment of the US Army stationed at Munich. It was during this time that he took a six month deaconate course. His instructors were the Rev. Fathers Ivan Leskovych, Stephan Dmytryshyn and Bohdan Levycky. Deacon Stephan emigrated to Canada in 1954, and commenced working at Sheptytsky Institute in February of1956. He was ordained deacon by the most Reverend Andrew Roborecki at Canora, Saskatchewan, on the 12th of July, 1972. His examiners for his deaconate studies were the Rev. Fathers John Worona, Gregory Mykoliew and Onufrey Pasichniak. “Deacon Steve,” as the students fondly call him has many memories of the Institute in the twenty-five years of service he has rendered it. Numerous former students come and visit him each year, since he is identified with the Institute. _______________________ Lozinsky, Joseph (1981).
