Meet the President Ron Crosier by Stacy Connolly On Thursday, November 7, the gavel was handed from PSAI President Jeff Wigley to Vice President Ron Crosier at the General Session during the Myrtle Beach Convention and Trade Show to assume all Presidential duties and responsibilities of the PSAI, for the next seventeen months. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce him to new members of the association, as well as gather some little known facts for those who have known him over the past years. Here are some of the questions that my inquiring mind wanted to know! SC: Ron, can you tell me a little bit about your history with Crosiers and how that came to be in West Virginia? RC: I bought the company from my parents in 1995 after working for 10 years as an Engineer. It’s been a family owned business for two generations and more than 46 years. SC: What prompted you to be a part of the PSAI, and now take on such a huge role? RC: I want to serve as a way of supporting an organization that has been instrumental in the success that I’ve had in the portable restroom business. SC: That’s pretty cool to give back. What would you say is one of the most interesting PSAI events that you’ve attended thus far?

RC: Well, I’d have to say that was when we were in Kansas City and incoming President Ray Luden, Sr. insisted I not only accompany his group to dinner but also sit down with him at the table. It was there that I first realized what collective wisdom was to be garnered from this association. While I’ll never be in league with many of the industry icons, I want to pay anything I’ve learned forward and help improve the industry in some small way. SC: I like hearing about the past. That sounds like quite the experience. What are you looking forward to in the future? RC: I’m looking forward to seeing the PSAI become what its mission requires as we move forward, and I will hire a great director to head the organization. SC: I think you’ll attain that goal. Now, tell me quickly, what are some things you do outside of work? RC: Outside of work, I run, bicycle, and scull when I get the chance. I also hike and fish occasionally. SC: Thanks Ron, for chatting with me!

What’s New, Nashville? Frequently Asked Questions about the Convention & Trade Show in Nashville Q. When is the Convention & Trade Show in 2014? A. March 19 – 23, 2014 Q. Where will it be located? A. Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. This exclusive resort and hotel used to be home to the Pumper Show, and the PSAI is thrilled to bring our show to this centralized location in 2014. Q. Why did you move the show from fall to spring? A. Moving the show was a direct request from PSAI Suppliers. We were happy to oblige! Why? More Operators purchase equipment and supplies in the spring, making it a much more relevant time for a trade show. We’ve moved Nuts & Bolts Educational Workshop to the fall, so there are still two shows on opposite ends of the calendar for Operators and Suppliers to network together in person. Q. As a Supplier, I do I register to reserve a booth or truck/trailer space on the trade show floor? A. Registrations are open to all PSAI Suppliers in good standing! Check out www.psai.org/events-nashville/ where we will be continually updating information. As this newsletter goes to press, we have a map of the show floor indicating which booths are open or already reserved. As always, call the office to get the fastest service in booking your booth, and all Suppliers were emailed forms, so have those ready to go as well. Q. What are the costs for booths and truck/trailer spaces? A. If you are a Silver or Bronze Supplier, you may purchase spaces the same as before – a la carte purchase. The price is the same: $1,170 each. If you are Platinum or Gold, there are economies in the benefits received in bulk through these membership levels. Q. Will the Convention Catalog also be online? A. Absolutely, the entire publication will be online, so if you are Supplier submitting an ad, be sure to embed links to your website into the final high-res PDF artwork. This will drive Operators directly to your website. Q. When will Operators and Suppliers be able to register attendees? A. We will open up registration for attendees and events this week. We have a lot in motion that will make the show really fun! • March 19: Studio B and they Country Music Hall of Fame: $50 per person. “No Flush Zone” A State of Emergency in Estes Park, Colorado by Melissa Kalal Portable Sanitation Part of Effective Flood Relief for Estes Park, Colorado Residents The town of Estes Park, Colorado found itself in a state of emergency on September 13, 2013 when the town experienced a 1000-year flood. A 2.5-mile-long sewer line along Fish Creek in Upper Thompson Sanitation District was destroyed, leaving over 2,000 of the 5,000 residents in a semipermanent “No Flush Zone” until all repairs could be made.

(Roads were swept away, taking with all city sewer and plumbing infrastructure) Over 150 portable restrooms were brought in, and repairs to the sewage infrastructure began as quickly as possible. With over 16,000 feet of temporary pipe to install in flood-damaged terrain, it was unclear how many weeks or months that over one-third of the homes in Estes Park would be without indoor sanitation.

For most residents, a portable restroom was available within a block or two of their home. Some residents rented their own units and kept them in their garage or in their driveway. In addition, the Upper Thompson Sanitation District set up a “dumping station” – where people could transport and then dump their waste. Most families used a combination of buckets (with deodorant), as well as the outdoor portable restrooms that were provided in each neighborhood. Often times the units were set up by the mailboxes. Estes Park resident, Susan Anderson, a Victim Advocate Counselor at a local woman’s shelter said, “With the deodorizers used in both the neighborhood units as well as indoor set ups, there really was no smell, and we found it more funny than inconvenient. You take for granted being able to flush when needed, and suddenly, that’s not going to be an option for what could be many, many months.” Anderson’s husband, Ron Bockhaus, a pastor at Shepherd of the Mountain Lutheran Church, encouraged people to make the best of the situation. “People didn’t complain or whine. Somebody started a porta-pottie decorating contest, which put a little humor into a lifesaving situation. And another guy dressed up as a portable restroom for Halloween.”

(Piping estimated at over 2 billion dollars in damages) While homes and businesses had potable water, imagine thousands of people flushing their waste directly into Fish River, then Estes Lake flows into the Big Thompson River. Thousands of gallons of urine with high concentrations of ammonia and disease-carrying fecal matter would find its way into major metropolitan areas of Loveland, Fort Collins and beyond…impacting tens of thousands. What could happen? Encephalitis, Giardia, Hepatitis A, Salmonella, Polio, Typhoid Fever, and Cholera…just to name a few dangerous diseases.

(Continued page 4) Estes Park is home to high winds, so on occasion, a few of the units blew over. But service was reported to be excellent, and regular emails and Facebook updates from Upper Thompson Sanitation District to let residents know when “No Flush Zones” were fixed were much welcomed. In addition, calls were made to each home when the “No Flush” ban was removed. On November 22, 2013, after long hours from staff and contractors, it was official: The final connection was made, and there were no more “No Flush Zones” in Estes Park. Work on the temporary pipe was completed before winter, and residents were relieved. While work continues to rebuild roads and infrastructure, Estes Park is able to enjoy the holidays, without walking down to the mailbox to use the portable restroom! PSAI’s Education Initiative by Mitch Mooers, Marketing Manager, Satellite Industries

EI stands for “Education Initiative”. Essentially, EI is a group of PSAI operators and suppliers working in conjunction with the PSAI Board and staff to accomplish two major goals. One is to improve the image of our industry, and the second is to join the effort to fight human suffering caused by the lack of proper sanitation in countries around the world. The image of our industry by our customers, government agencies and the general public has an effect on our member organizations’ profitability. Because portable sanitation and more specifically portable restrooms are viewed in a negative light, we are often being paid less than what our services are worth. The EI group is in the process of writing and producing PSAI website content, informative press releases and

a media kit for operators to help them educate their customers all while planning how to promote the first ever World Portable Sanitation Day on August 15, 2014! These efforts and others like them are the first steps in reaching our goal of improving our industry’s image. To meet the humanitarian goal, the group is beginning to reach out to other non-profit organizations. By establishing relationships with existing organizations that provide relief efforts, EI will extend its reach, resources, and influence beyond what we could each do on our own. If you are a dedicated PSAI member who sees the value in improving the image of our industry and wants to help others, you are welcome to be part of the EI group. We can make a difference in many positive ways as we work together on this and many other important projects. 2014 Preview – International Focus “All Around the World” by Jeff Wigley

The PSAI has established a set of exciting goals for 2014. Known as “The 4 I’s” these goals include: 1. 2. 3. 4.

To highlight the INTERNATIONAL Goal, we are proud to announce that Barcelona, Spain will be the host for the PSAI International Board Meeting and Educational Workshop from May 15-17, 2014. Based on the standards set at the 2012 International Board Meeting and Educational Workshop held in Cali, Columbia, this meeting will offer PSAI Certification in Spanish, Roundtables, and Discussions with local Members in Europe. In addition, we will embark on a series of articles about the “History of Portable Sanitation” in various countries throughout the world. This series will complement the “PSAI Through the Decades” that that covers the history of our industry in the United States that was created as a part of our 40th Anniversary Celebration. Our historical exploration of our industry will feature: CANADA Our first article to kick-off 2014 will be to focus on “our neighbors to the North,” Canada. Portable sanitation has been prominent in both the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary (1000 units) as well as the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver (2200 units). Toronto hosted the Pope’s visit in 2002 as well as other large events throughout the years. The origins of the industry in Canada will be explored. Our Board Member, Jake Groen, will be a valuable contact here. Longtime PSAI Members Ken Winter of Ontario and former Board Member Allen Baird of Nova Scotia will provide an interesting historical perspective of the origins of our industry in their country. EUROPE With the Spring Meeting in Barcelona, Europe will be the focus of the next chapter of our International Focus. Our longtime friend, Andy Gump Award recipient, and Honorary Lifetime Member, Lothar Vermillion will be a valuable resource with this project due to his long and successful career in Europe. Our host in Barcelona, Sebastian Ortiz will also be a source of knowledge and assistance.

Our friends with the PSE – Portable Sanitation Europe will be vital to the success of this endeavor as well. The Summer Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 and in London in 2012 should provide some interesting stories as well as other events held “on the continent” though the decades. AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND After a successful International Meeting in Sydney, Australia in September 2008, our Members “Down Under” have been active participants in various PSAI gatherings. The most active Member in this lovely area of the world is our dear friend, Diane Dakin of Christchurch, New Zealand. She has many remembrances of the rich history of this region, as her father was a pioneer in the industry. Diane also has firsthand knowledge of being an emergency responder to the City of Christchurch as a result of the Earthquakes of 2011 and 2012. PSAI Members in Australia will have stories of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney as well as a wealth of other interesting information to share. CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA Our “neighbors to the South” will conclude our series of the History of Portable Sanitation throughout the World. With the recent widening of the Panama Canal, the burgeoning oil industry in Venezuela, the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, and other historical events, this chapter should be interesting and informative. Perhaps the most exciting future chapter of this worldwide saga will occur in Brazil. The World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016 are but a few of the exciting events that will put the spotlight of the world on this country. Another friend of the PSAI, Roberto Zeitlin will be a valuable contributor to this section of the article. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED…. A Quick Recap… The Myrtle Beach Convention & Trade Show was a hit! The Sheraton had a great layout, with everything in one spot so those in attendance didn’t have great distances to travel once they arrived on site. Did you know that there were 360 people there? We also had a large number of those at the show visit the special event at Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville: 190! This ended up to be quite the turnout, with fifty exhibitors on the trade show floor, and twenty-four people taking the PSAI Health and Safety Certification.

An Exciting Announcement…

We thank them for all of the hard work to put presentations together for us! Lothar Vermillion, from Germany, spoke on “International Differences in Portable Sanitation” while Wes Tuttle talked about “Alternative Fuel Vehicles”. Scott Waddle, formerly of the US NAVY brought us a session on “Failure is not Final” and Bill Gibson spoke of “Brand Marketing” and issues that come with it. Finally, Paul Butler returned to tell us of “Business Financial Intelligence”. We’re proud of the turnout and involvement that was shown in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We are looking forward to Nashville, Tennessee. See you next year!

Jeff Wigley set forth the “Proclamation” for the very first “World Portable Sanitation Day” to be celebrated on August 15, 2014. This innovative event will bring a positive light to how we serve our industry, along with many opportunities to educate the public on what we do. Stay tuned.
