Ward launches honor society

Clark artists win at regional competition

Ward ES is among the first in the District to establish a chapter of the newly developed National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS).

O’Connor student marches in nationallytelevised parade Claire Salli, a senior at O’Connor HS, was one of 299 students chosen after national auditions for the Bands of America Honors Band. She participated in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Tournament Band Fest, and performed at Disneyland.

NEHS was established to recognize elementary students for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility, to provide meaningful service to the school and community, and to develop essential leadership skills in elementary school students. The school held a ceremony to induct 70 fourth and fifth grade students into NEHS. Chapter Adviser is GT Specialist Virginia Parker, and faculty committee members are Tamara Burton, Cheryl Avila, and Deloris Chandler. Pictured are (from l-r, front row) Kendall Fields, Megan Sorenson, Perrin Wheeler, and Kyara Taylor; and (back row) Tamara Burton, Cheryl Avila, and Virginia Parker. Students enjoy the conga at Passmore

Kindergarten students at Passmore ES had a chance for multicultural learning during a day devoted to exploring other countries such as Jamaica, Germany, Korea, Mexico, and Cuba. Marci Barrientos from the NISD Bilingual Department was among the featured speakers.

NISD goes mobile Can’t remember an address of a school? Need to find out the day’s cafeteria menu or what time the PTA meeting starts?

Northside ISD now has an app for that. NISD launched a free mobile iPhone app recently to provide community members a quick, easy, and mobile phone-friendly way to access information about NISD schools and services. However, there may be some links that lead to non-NISD-supported webpages that are not mobile-friendly. The app can be downloaded for free through the App Store. The District is working on an Android version but a release date is not yet available.

Students create mural for Zachry library

If “a picture is worth a thousand words,” then a mural in a library must be worth a thousand books.

Three talented art students at Zachry MS created a mural in the school library depicting a stack of books with a quote from former President Lyndon B. Johnson, “A book is the most effective weapon against intolerance and ignorance.” The student artists are pictured (from l-r) Dalana Patlan, Vanessa Gonzales, and Hunter Spencer. The trio worked in conjunction with Librarian Barbara Mayers. Their art teacher is Nicolas Haiden.

Behlau students take a step back in time

Students at Behlau ES were taken on a prehistoric journey through time as they learned about a variety of different dinosaurs from Dinosaur George.

Shrieks filled the campus cafeteria as Dinosaur George showed fossils of woolly mammoth teeth, a saber-tooth cat skull, a stegosaurus plate and spike, and a raptor foot with huge claws. But the highlight of Dinosaur George’s trip was when he showed the jawbone and razor sharp teeth of a female tyrannosaurus rex, everyone’s favorite dinosaur. “The kids were rolling on the floor with laughter,” said third grade teacher Justin Uting. “Dino George didn’t just inform the kids about dinosaurs through facts, but he also told humorous stories, which included some goofy dino sound effects.” Pictured with Dinosaur George are third grade students Jacob Palma, Isaiah Johnson, Natalie Perez, and Sophia Ramos.

Author kicks off campus reading challenge Blattman ES was host to author Jerry Pallotta recently. Pallotta is the author of more than 20 alphabet and math books, as well as the Icky Bug books and others.

The author visited the school to kick off its BEAR Reading Challenge, which began Jan. 21. During the challenge, students are asked to read 360 minutes (six hours of outside school reading) in four weeks. Last year, students logged more than 300,000 minutes. Pictured is Pallotta standing in front of a welcome bulletin board.

Rampage players “stick with reading”

Students at Elrod ES know all about achieving goals. Knowing something about goals themselves, two members of the Rampage Hockey Team made a special visit to Jeanne Kuhlman’s first grade class recognition of the students completing all their class reading goals.

Quinton Howden and John Lee made the visit as part of the Rampage’s “Stick with Reading” program. The pair read the book, Z for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet by Mat Napier, and then answered questions and demonstrated how to suit up in their hockey gear. Pictured are students in Kuhlman’s first grade class with Howden and Lee.
