HL- This article provides information that shows drawing is effective when used as a central component to writing programs during the first year of school. This study provided support that students are more comfortable when they are encouraged to draw pictures with their writing tasks. This study finds that when children are encouraged to use drawings, something that is not new to them, their confidence with writing will improve.

It stresses that writing is an important process and we should “write to learn.” The website logically explains the benefits of quantitative writing as well as provides examples of this type of writing. This useful website gave me the knowledge to easily apply quantitative writing and writing to learn in my classroom.

CG. This research article, “Science Journals in Pre-School Classroom,” examines the importance of journal writing with preschool students in the subject of science. The evidence in this source is moderate since the study was carried out in a limited number of pre-school classrooms, did not mention how it could be applied to other disciplines or different grade levels. However, the research demonstrated students developed a deeper understanding of the science topic when they were journaling and graphing. Journal writing is a way to integrate language and literature skills while incorporating science with its predictions (hypothesis), data collection, and the ability to make observation.

CG. The evidence in this source is moderate since the research was completed in only ten middle school classrooms in Australia. The author used the new method of Design-Based Research, which has seven steps, to increase students’ understanding of curriculum-specific vocabulary and science literacy. The research demonstrated this goal orientated, interactive and flexible teaching method created an increase in students’ technical language, engagement, writing skills, confidence in science literacies, and knowledge of science genres. Students can explore documents/resources from the Library of Congress through “close reading.” Assessments are provided for each lesson. Originally Bloom’s Taxonomy was depicted as a triangle; however, Schrock created an appealing diagram, Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, where the cognitive levels are illustrated as “Cogs of Cognition.” Each cog interlocks with and is surrounded by examples of activities to demonstrate obtain that level of cognition, and the diagram demonstrates how our minds access other taxonomies in the process of acquiring new knowledge. This interactive website incorporates technology into the classroom by illustrating iPad, Android, Google, and Web 2.0 apps to support the revised taxonomy. As a teacher, I find that it is always important to keep Bloom’s Taxonomies in mind when designing and planning curriculum. This is an extremely useful website.
