Young Entrepreneurs Development Council's Business Plan Competition Goes Regional for 2012 Launch of HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge

Hong Kong (23 February 2012) The Young Entrepreneurs Development Council (YDC) is pleased to announce a new brand E-Challenge. Sponsored by the Hongkong Bank Foundation, the newly launched HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge will offer Hong Kong post-secondary students a chance to compete against students from other Asia-Pacific countries in a regional business plan competition. Since 2000, the YDC has annually organized a student business planning competition in Hong Kong, designed to hone the business acumen and personal strengths of aspiring entrepreneurs. The E-Challenge provides them the tools to learn and develop business plans and secure funding to realize their entrepreneurial dreams. Now the students have taken their new business plan competition to new heights and expanded it to across the Asia Pacific region. The new venture, known as the HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge, will also receive funding support from the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC). “With 11 successful years under its belt, YDC is excited to take its entrepreneurial challenge from local to regional prominence. The sponsorship and support of the Hongkong Bank Foundation and ITC will allow us to make the competition even greater,” said Legislative Councilor Sophie Leung, chairman of YDC. “By combining the strengths and experiences of everyone involved, we hope to contribute in revitalizing entrepreneurship in Hong Kong, which will go a long way towards improving Hong Kong's future competitiveness in the fast growing global economy. We believe entrepreneurial spirit can be cultivated and it is for everyone and anyone. A society vibrant with entrepreneurial spirit will naturally be healthier and its people will be more dynamic,” Ms. Leung added. “This project represents a new milestone for the YDC.”

The competition, which will run from February through July, will be comprised of two parts: 1.

A local competition for post-secondary students attending Hong Kong universities and an Asia-Pacific regional competition organized in Hong Kong. Between February and July, a series of workshops and networking opportunities, led by industry veterans and investors, will be conducted to help finalists develop and improve their business plans. Featured workshop speakers will include such noted local entrepreneurs as Ms Denise Che, Chief Executive Officer of Wiser Information Limited and Mr. Abraham Chan, the founder of Pura Phram.

2. Ultimately, six champion teams from Bangladesh, Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand will compete for the "Best of the Best Award“ in Hong Kong in 31 July. YDC’s efforts to get the entrepreneurial juices flowing in Hong Kong students do not begin and end with tertiary students. The organization has been recognized by Policy 21 for its School-Company Partnership program which introduces secondary students to the commercial world and is a model for secondary students. Other major supporters of the HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge 2012 include: Young Entrepreneurs’ Organization Hong Kong Chapter, the Innovation and Technology Commission, the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Bridgeway and the Hong Kong Business Angel Network.
